Charted Space's WebWorlds Template
GENERAL DIMENSION:
Project: Charted Space
Designers: Robert Kondrk, Hope Kondrk
Member Cluster: None/Unknown
Worlds: Lapis (Aldebaran 0808) is the main campaign world. Additional
worlds will be described as they are completed; Charted space contains
tens of thousands. Many of them will be based on their Traveller
equivalent.
Genre: GURPS Traveller
Baseline: This is a variant of the Traveller universe, that allows
for additional types of tech and limited use of magic.
CONNECTIONS:
For the most part, dimensional travel is completely unknown in this
dimension. However, existing FTL transportation technology (jump
drives) is so close to the technology that would be necessary for
dimensional travel that malfunctioning jump drives occasionally open
dimensional portals for very short periods of time. Unfortunately, no
one (except for a race hundreds of parsecs outside of charted space) has
realized that this happens. Any reports of strange occurences during
drive failures are considered as hallucinations caused by direct
exposure to the strange physics of "jumpspace".
Unbeknownst to anyone in this dimension, many ships that are
assumed "lost in jumpspace" actually end up in alternate dimensions,
and recently, a dimension-hopping race has noticed this fact...
TECHNOLOGY:
Tech Level Range: Generally, available tech is between TL 5 and TL 12, but both
higher and lower tech does occur occasionally. Lapis' tech is low TL 13.
Maximum Tech Level: None Exceed Max Tech: Not applicable
Special Notes: Some types of tech, such as biotech, AI robotics,
and psionic enhancement are not widely pursued due to sociological reasons.
Lapis and most of the rest of systems in Solomani Space are notable exceptions
to this limitation, however.
MAGIC:
Magic systems: Not yet decided
Mana Level: LO: None, AVG: Low, HI: Normal
Special Restrictions: None
Special Notes: Virtually no one in this dimension even acknowledges
the _existance_ of magic, but it can be and is done. Certain non-human
races make extensive use of magic that is mistaken for psionics or high tech.
PSIONICS:
Indigenous Types: Any Max Level: None
Exceed Max Psi: not applicable
Special Notes: Some races, such as the Droyne and the Zhodani, use
psionics extensively. On the other hand, some races have a strong
anti-psionic bias (such as the Imperium).
RELIGION:
Religious Systems: Any (varies from world to world)
Religious Powers: Most religious beliefs in known space carry no
real power behind them. However, some religions do worship actual
deities, and some clergy actually do have the ability to perform
Clerical Magic, as per the Compendium I definition.
Hostile Religions: None
Special Notes: A majority of the sentient beings in known space are
either atheistic or agnostic.
RACES:
Denizens: Humans (Solomani, Vilani, Zhodani, other minor human
races), Aslan, Vargr, Droyne, Nirians, and many others. Most
of the major ones are as they are described in Traveller.
Varieties Allowed: Many, proposals for additional races are welcome.
Special Notes: None
SYNOPSIS:
The effect that I want to achieve with this Traveller variant is a
dimension that is primarily governed by "hard" science, but has enough
magic to cause many things that science can't explain. Also, I want to
have a handful of worlds (such as Boralia [Theta Borealis 0810] where magic
is prevalent or pervasive.
SPECIAL CONDITIONS:
Space-faring: Known space contains 30,000+ worlds, and
interstellar travel and trade is an everyday fact of life. In
addition, charted space is only a _very_ tiny portion of a galaxy (and a
universe) that teems with lifeforms.
