Why Go: Surrounded by five colleges – Amherst, Hampshire, Mount Holyoke, and Smith colleges and the University of Massachusetts at Amherst – this town is the home of higher education in the Pioneer Valley. Five years ago, however, a famous children’s author and illustrator opened up the first art museum for the younger crowds.
What to See: Open up the world of imagination at the Eric Carle Museum of Picture Book Art (125 West Bay Road). With three galleries, a hands-on art studio, an auditorium, and a library, you and your kids will be inspired and delighted by new and familiar pieces of art. The Carle is part of Museums10, a partnership of area museums for art, books, natural history, and culture. Explore dinosaur tracks, fossils, and minerals at the Amherst College Museum of Natural History (Barrett Hill).
Visit the birthplace and home of poet Emily Dickinson (280 Main Street). Take a walk on a small section of the Robert Frost Trail that goes from the Holyoke Range State Park to Mount Toby Forest. Just don’t expect to walk the whole thing in a day. The trail is more than 30 miles long!
