Installing the Rocker Guards from AtoZfabrication.

I ordered the rocker guards from Zach at AtoZ with the steps. These rockers have not been painted or drilled.

One thing to remember... These are being installed on a 1999 Sahara. These models have the plastic rockers that need to be removed. To removed the original rockers, you must remove the 5 or so screws holding the bottom of the rockers to the Jeep. Once the screws are out, lift up on the rockers so they will release from the metal strip just below the door. If you have the Ventshade step guards this is not fun. The metal strip is pop rivetted to the side of the Jeep. I tried to drill the rivets but that was too much of a hassle. TIME FOR THE GRINDER !!!! Use the hand grinder to remove the heads of the rivets. Once the heads are gone the metal strip fell off the Jeep.

Here's the panels removed.

The plastic rockers are gone. Now it's time for a little clean up. Wipe the Jeep sides with a damp towel to remove all the dust and dirt that has collected over the years. I also polished and waxed the sides.

Drilling and Test Fit

I used a jack and a hi-lift to hold the rockers to mark the holes to drill. I decided to use 3 of the holes that were already there from the Sahara rockers. Use a small drill bit to start the hole, then move up to the 5/16". Also, I used some masking tape to prevent any scratches when doing the test fit. The bolts are 5/16" X 1 1/4" coarse thread allen head stainless. Since no stores around here seem to carry anthing that you actually need, I ordered them from BoltDepot.

This will give you a better idea of the holes drilled. I used RTV silicone to seal the extra holes left from the Sahara rockers.

Painting

Primered using black Plasti-Kote primer.

Installation

After primering the rockers, I didn't have enough time to start spray painting. I went ahead and installed them while they are primered. Hopefully I will be able to sand and paint within the next week.

Here's how they look so far.

Ok, finally I had time to remove the rockers and paint. I used Plasti-Kote Satin Black for the color to make the rockers look like powdercoat with the ease of repainting when they are scratched.

Once the paint dried for a day, the rockers were finally installed with the stainless hardware.

Finished !!!!!!!!

Thanks to Zach at AtoZFabrication for the great prices and work.
