From Behind the Library Desk - June Really Is Busting Out All Over At Rebecca M. Arthurs Memorial Library!

The parking lot is filled to overflowing! The noise level inside the building has reached an all time high! Children and adults can be seen coming and going in greater numbers than ever before! What on earth is going on at Rebecca M. Arthurs Memorial Library!!!

Well I'm so glad you asked, because just when the school year is winding down, here at RMAL we are gearing up for a spectacular summer schedule, overflowing with exciting and fun events for all ages.

Our June kickoff event is a celebration of Thomas the Tank and will be held Saturday, June 10th, from 1-3 p.m. The journey begins at the Jefferson County Historical Center where children and friends will meet to see the famous Bowdish Train Exhibit, a well known piece of Brookville's history. Then it's off to the library at 2:00 p.m. for the snack, craft and story time. Be sure and make tracks to join in the fun!

For those of you who have been waiting patiently since last June, it is time once again for the Annual Used Book Sale June 13-18 and what an event this is going to be! As a newcomer to the behind-the-scenes activity involved in this event, I am literally awestruck at the number of books that have been so generously donated by our library patrons and supporters. It looks like there will be thousands of books to choose from with something for everyone, from the beginning reader to seasoned booklovers. This year there will also be Pete's hot dogs available on the first day of the sale. Stop by the library and pick up a schedule of times and prices for this "Booktacular" Event. Also, a special thanks to all the volunteers who make this possible.

In addition to the book sale, we are proud to present a special Laurel Week event. On Thursday, June 15, Patti Lawson, local well-known author, will be speaking at a luncheon to be held at 11:30 a.m. at Harper's Run. Patti, author of "The Dog Diet" will be there with her dog Sadie to tell how she "dropped pounds and gained peace and happiness when her new puppy began to shower her with unconditional love and devotion." This event includes lunch, Patti's presentation, and a signed copy of her book with advance tickets available at a cost of $25.00. Call the library for more information and directions to Harper's Run.

And yes, for all the moms and kids who wondered what to do when school is out, we have the summer reading program and this year plans to be a winner! The theme is "Paws, Claws, Scales and Tales" with the emphasis for each week being a different feathered, furry, or scaled critter, with the occasional backyard bug thrown in for good measure. Children will be asked to read (or be read to) 10 hours over the summer to be eligible for a t-shirt prize. The library kickoff party and registration will be held Saturday, June 24, from 2:00-4:00 p.m. and entertainment will be provided by Mike Zoffuto and his "Rock and Roll Pet Shop". Don't miss Mike and his zany, one-of-a-kind show that will delight your senses and tickle your funnybone.

Last, but certainly not least, when you come in for any of these events, or just your regular visit, be sure to check out the mural in the children's area. Harry, Janet, Ashley, and Melanie have made the library walls literally "pop" with brightly colored images of favorite book and cartoon characters. Thanks guys for all those hours of planning, drawing and painting. You did a fantastic job!

Happy Summer! Happy Reading!
