The photograph was contact-printed from an 8" x 10" glass plate negative by David Taylor. The original photograph was taken in the 1920's by Fred Knapp, Brookville's finest early 20th century photographer. When the Arthurs Library opened on January 18, 1958, 1,400 books were on the shelves. During the first month, 278 people became library card holders.

When the library outgrew the Arthurs Mansion, the Hughes Food Market of Valley Street was purchased and renovated. The library opened at the new location on June 16, 1976. At that time, 13,500 books were moved from the old structure by various community volunteers. The library subscribed to 30 periodicals and 5 newspapers. Presently, the Rebecca M. Arthurs Memorial Library contains nearly 25,000 books and subscribes to 60 periodicals. The card holders number 3,200.

Today's library is a center for knowledge of all kinds in many forms. While books are still the focal point of the library, the Arthurs Memorial Library offers much more. We've increased our holdings to include books on audio tapes, video cassette tapes, and information on CD-ROMS. Computers are available to patrons for personal use as well as for library-related functions.

Our library completed a major renovation in the spring of 2000. This renovation and addition increased the space of the library and improved the service to the community. Among the areas renovated and expanded were the patron study area, patron reading room, children's room, and computer center.
