From Behind the Library Desk - Things Past and Things To Come At Rebecca M. Arthurs Memorial Library

If you have been following these articles, then you are aware of the many programs your local library has to offer for children in our area. Specific schedules for the summer reading program, "Paws, Claws, Scales and Tales" may be obtained by calling or visiting RMAL.

Did you know that the library also has special programs available for teens and adults?

Do you have "the great American novel" just waiting to be published or are you a budding author looking for others who share your interest and your passion for writing? If you answered yes to either of the above, there is a local writers group that meets the third Tuesday of each month at the library. This group, under the direction of Jan Sady, a published author and writing instructor at local conferences, meets informally to learn more about the practical aspect of writing, while delving into the mysteries of getting your work published. All genres of writing are welcome, from fiction to fantasy, poetry to prose. The special July 18th meeting will be a critiquing session, where those who wish to participate may bring a completed work or a work in progress to share with the group for discussion and comments. If you don't feel ready to have your work critiqued, you are welcome to come and offer support and encouragement to others.

If you are a teen and you like to read, there is a summer teen reading program available and Beth promises to make it an interesting one. This group not only reads, but takes field trips and works on special projects for the library.

For the adult reader, the Book Discussion Group meets once a month to share comments and critiques on selected works, both fiction and nonfiction. Upcoming titles are Bell Canto and The Heart Is A Lonely Hunter, to mention just a few. Contact the library for specific information.

Last month, June, was an exceptional one at RMAL as we completed one of our most successful book sales ever, proving once again that our supporters are exceptional in their willingness to donate books, help with the setup and take down, and of course the actual purchases. A heartfelt thank you is sent to each and every person who contributed to this year's event.

Also in June was our first, but certainly not last, author's luncheon, held during the Laurel Festival week. This year our guest speaker was Patti Lawson accompanied by her dog Sadie. Patti regaled those in attendance with her humor, her wit and her insight as she shared how her life was forever changed when Sadie became a part of it. Patti's book, The Dog Diet, has gained national recognition and two more companion books are already underway. This event was held at Harper's Run on a lovely afternoon where an atmosphere of gentility and hospitality were much in evidence. As we were leaving that day, it was not unusual to hear the comment, "I can't wait to do this again next year!" It was definitely an event to be remembered.

Summer is finally here and on those days when the heat and humidity find you looking for the perfect cool spot in which to relax, why not stop by your local library? We have good books, friendly staff waiting to greet you, and a comfortable reading area that is decidedly the best place in town to spend a few hours away from July's hustle and bustle.

Hope to see you soon at Rebecca M. Arthurs Memorial Library where a good read is always just a page away.
