Strybing Arboretum and Botanical Garden
Golden Gate Park, San Francisco, California

The Strybing Arboretum is also located in Golden Gate Park. The botanical gardens cover over 50 acres, and contain over 2000 specimens. The gardens are not nearly as manicured as those in the Hagiwara garden. The beds are arranged according to the area of the world in which the plants grow.

This is the main throughfare through the garden. It leads from the Japanese Rock Garden up to the central fountain near the entrance. Benches are available for sitting and relaxing.
The westernmost portion of the garden is styled as a Japanese rock garden, with small grass and evergreen plantings.
In the central part of the gardens, there is a duck pond chock full of mallards. Here, a male and female are just finishing washing themselves.
Pigeons like to hang out at the pond, too.
A female mallard swims by, looking for something tasty to eat.
The Mediteranean climate of San Francisco allows specimens like the Bird of Paradise to grow as perennials outdoors. SF never really gets wiltingly hot in the summer, nor does it regularly freeze in the winter. The hottest temperatures are usually around 80F, and the lowest around 40.
