House Project: Book Cases

Model Home Picture

In the model home for this townhouse, the builder (Miller and Smith) installed some optional base cabinets and shelves on both sides of the fireplace.  They wanted quite a bit of money for this option.  So I waited and had the basic cabinetry and shelving work done by an outside contractor.

Prior to Start of Work

Unfortunately I did not take a very good picture of this area before work started but I'm sure that you'll be able to grasp the basic concept.  Basically I had large empty openings on both sides of the fireplace.  I found a contractor that was willing to do the basic woodwork for me.

Finishing and Painting

This is a picture of the bookcase project after the contractor completed his work.  From here I took over and caulked all the seams.  Then I primed all the surfaces with a product that I bought from Sherwin Williams that is similar to Kilz.  After that I sanded down high caulk and primer wherever necessary.  I applied 2 coats of latex based paint that is the same color as the molding trim used throughout the rest of the house.

End Product

Ignore the pink rainbow appearance of everything that you see below as that is some sort of digital picture resolution artifact.  The walls are really just plain white.  This project turned out pretty well.  I only took pictures of the right side cabinet.  The left side is identical.  As you can see with the cabinet doors open (picture on right), 4 boxes of computer software, hardware and media are now hidden out of sight.  The adjustable height shelves turned out to be just a bit too wimpy to handle a full rack of heavy books.  The red books on the top shelf are some lightweight binders that contain back issues of Toy Trains magazine.  It turns out that I didn't need that much heavy book storage anyway, but if I ever need more, I'll nail in some shelf supports underneath the edges.  This would make the shelves non-adjustable of course. The main reason that I wanted to do this was to create some storage for my spare computer parts and miscellaneous mailing supplies.  I already had several other "barrister" book cases in other parts of the house.
