Concerning Ezra Day
November 20, 2005
I am descended from a line of Days. I have names and dates, but few locations. The one location I have is for Ezra Day, b. June 7, 17 73 in South Hadley ; died Sept 25, 18 31 and is buried in South Hadley Cemetery , opposite Mt. Holyoke College . He married Ruth Whipple (b. July 16, 17 76 ; d. Apr 5, 18 63 in Greenfield , Saratoga Co, NY) on Jan 17, 17 96 . They had at least one child, Sally Day, b. Nov 12, 17 97.
I can trace the generations from Ezra Day back to Robert Day (b. 1604) with dates and names of wives, but no locations. I would like to find out more about the Day family, especially WHERE they were born, married and died…Ellen Messick Hollister

Concerning Clarence George Shocro
August 1, 2005
“I am looking for information about my father's family. My father was Clarence George Shockro, and he was born and raised in South Hadley , MA (born in June of 1909). His grandfather immigrated from Ireland perhaps under the name of Sughrue. How might I find information about my father's family from the time they arrived in South Hadley ? Patricia Gordon.” |

Concerning the Walnut Grove Dairy
October 3, 2005
“I recently purchased a milk bottle with the embossed name of walnut grove dairy on it. Do you have any information on where this dairy was located, and who owned it, or the years of operation? My family has lived in town for many years and we have never heard of this dairy...” |

Marian:
Historical Society members have provided this information:
1. …This bottle plus a Green Pine Dairy Bottle are on the Internet (EBay) right now under (6213855293) & (6213849954). I will not BID on them but if any one else does I suggest that they let the group know…
2. I, at one time, collected milk bottles (they are gone now) and I compiled a listing of Holyoke and South Hadley bottles. As I remember, Walnut Grove was a beautiful embossed 1/2 pint bottle.
The only years I found this Walnut Grove was 1933 and 1934. However, also at 4 Elm Street was Mrs. Clara Martin, widow of Fred P. Martin…Martin's Holyoke bottle also says Jersey Cream and is identical to the Walnut Grove bottle…1918… Frederick P. Martin, wholesale cream, 4 Elm Street, SHF …In 1915, 4 Elm Street was Howard C. Lamb, milk dealer…1919 - Mrs. Clara A. Martin, widow Fred, wholesale Cream, 4 Elm Street…1932 - under milk dealers, Clara A. Martin, 4 Elm Street…1933 - First listing of Walnut Grove Dairy, Mrs. Clara A, Martin, 4 Elm Street, South Hadley Falls.

Concerning the Hampshire Paper Company
August 25, 2005
“…Several years back north of Cincinnati , I acquired a box of "Old Hampshire Vellum - A Stationary of Distinction." It has sat at our bureau for many years. I am curious to see what its age is… I am trying to find out the dates of when the Hampshire Paper Co. of South Hadley Falls, Mass was in business. Would you be able to help me to find out this information or be able to direct me to someone who can help? Thank you for your time. Sincerely, -Ann…” |

Dear Ann:
Last night I informed our Society's Executive Board of your inquiry about the Hampshire Paper Co. According to "The South Hadley 250th Anniversary Book (2003), page 47:
"About 1864, the Glasgow Co...built a mill that produced paper of excellent quality... (that) in April 1866...was sold to Edward, Wells, and John Southworth, previous stockholders in the Glasgow Co., who organized the Hampshire Paper Co. Hampshire Paper was managed by the Southworth family until late 1935 when the Hampshire mill machines were shut down. Production of Old Hampshire bond and other well-established lines (Ann, perhaps including your Old Hampshire Vellum?) was carried on by the Carew Manufacturing Co., using some of Hampshire Paper's facilities.
On January 24, 19 40 , the Stevens Paper Mills, Inc. of Windsor , CT , took over the Hampshire Paper Co…about 1968, the South Hadley plant was closed. The mill was demolished about 1970."
On Page 34 of the 250th book, a caption of an excellent photo reads, "View in 1895 of the...Hampshire...mills..."
A search for "Hampshire Paper Co." on Google provided this link: http://www.holyokemass.com/historic/hwp_1876/lith25.html. Apparently, the Hampshire Paper Co. had operations in Holyoke as well as S. Hadley.
I am sending a copy of this email to two of our Society members who are knowledgeable about the history of the paper industry in S. Hadley. I will ask them…to look in our library the next time they are in our museum to see if we have any more information about the Hampshire Paper Co. If we do, we will pass it to you. If you visit South Hadley , please contact…so that we can arrange to show you our library and museum…

Concerning the Granis and Kellogg Families
“Hello. I have been researching my husband's grandmother's family history for a few years and am working on making the tree as colorful as possible with details and stories about those on each branch. I have been very fortunate in that the majority of her family are extremely well documented and extend back to colonial days, settling new towns throughout New England.
Some members of her family lived in Hadley in its earliest days. Edward Granis and Joseph Kellogg are some members of interest for me. I am looking for some clarification as to where they lived way back when and how it converts to the landscape of today. Do I focus my research and queries in Hadley or in South Hadley ? If I were to visit the area, in which town might they be buried? The Kellogg family was in charge of the ferry from Hadley to Northampton , later referred to as "Goodman's Ferry". Where might this have been located?
-Donna…"

…Donna, I must suggest that you start your research in Hadley.
Nothing you wrote suggests South Hadley to me and the two towns have been separate since 1753. Like South Hadley , Hadley has an active and knowledgeable historical society. Today I phoned…the Hadley Historical Society… She said that she is familiar with the Kellogg family in Hadley (but not with Granis) and she offered to speak with you, so I recommend that you phone her at…You may be interested in the book, History of Hadley, Including the Early History of Hatfield, South Hadley, Amherst, and Granby, Massachusetts, by Sylvester Judd, with Family Genealogies by Lucius M. Boltwood (Northampton, Massachusetts, 1863) 8vo., 636 pages. Look at http://www.digital-editions.com/HADLEY.htm. I think you are in luck, because the index includes listings for Kellogg, and also for an Edward Grains. Could that be your Edward Granis?...
Hadley has one of the richest histories of any town in Massachusetts . However, South Hadley was settled originally by Hadley residents and it would not be surprising if you find that a Kellogg or a Granis had South Hadley descendants. If you do find that, then we in South Hadley would be happy to try to help you with your research…
Response to Answer
August 23, 2005
…Thank you so much for your informative response to my email requesting guidance to genealogical research in your area. Thank you for the detailed leads as to where to find land records and the names of societies that would hold genealogical info within Hadley. I do have the book you mention by Sylvester Judd, with mention of Edward Granis and Joseph Kellogg. Yes, they are both the first in the line of those names. I am very curious to find out if they lived in Hadley during the same time. Any research I do will be geared towards answering that question.
I now have to organize myself and plan a trip to visit the museums and societies. Of course, fall would be the most beautiful time in which to do this. Not only will I have all of my binders and notes, but a camera and 2 rolls of film. I grew up on the shoreline of CT and miss New England , its' architecture and stone walls immensely. I will be calling…ahead of time to make the best of my limited time at the Historical Society. Thank you so much for your help…
