What's
in your P2P "bundle"? |
"What
the.... I don't remember installing THAT!!" |
I created this home page for the sole purpose of documenting how a typical Win98 box is affected by installing 11 of the file-sharing applications listed at Spywareinfo.com ( I could not locate the "Unify Media" version of BitTorrent ). If you have any questions, requests or comments send an email to robotarmy*at*comcast.net I will update the site as often as I can to stay synchronized with Spywareinfo's P2P review page to keep it as current and relevant as possible. Simply click on any of the links under "Peer to Peer Programs" on the left to learn about a particular program and the adware and/or spyware in its "bundle". Click on the "Archives" link to get old P2P info. It's important to note that the adware "bundle" installed with each of these programs can vary widely from month to month, so the information on this site in all likelihood is not the most current available. If you have any questions about "free" P2P program bundles, or adware/ spyware in general, pop over to Spywareinfo.com and Mike and Company will get you on the right track! |
| "But .... how do I get rid of all this stuff??!!" |
1) Don't Panic ;) 2) ***Run the uninstaller for the P2P program(s) first, then uninstall all the remaining components of the "bundle" that you don't want through "Add/Remove Programs" using the link for your P2P program above. If you expect to be able to uninstall just the spyware in the bundle, think again-- in many cases the spyware in the bundle is the "engine" that runs the P2P app. If you don't uninstall the P2P app. first, you'll wind up with a lot of useless junk on your hard drive that you'll have to painstakingly delete manually (even the "uninstaller" for the app. needs the spyware to run!) ***If you see other programs that aren't on my list, but look suspicious, you can see if they are spyware by going to "http://www.spychecker.com/" 3) Go to "http://www.safer-networking.org/index.php?page=download", download Spybot S&D (a great Adware-eliminating program that's being constantly updated and improved) 4) Update and run Spybot following the instructions shown here. If you're unfamiliar with Spybot, just run the program using its default settings and remove the things that it finds and "checks" by default (***see below) ***Note: As with any program you install on your computer, it is important to read the documentation to make sure it is something that you feel comfortable doing; the program authors and I can't be held responsible if anything untoward happens to your computer. That being said, it's a good utility & if you have any questions/ concerns before using it (**after reading the documentation), post them in the Spywareinfo forum or contact Spybot directly! |
