ROCHESTER LAND TRUST

2005 ANNUAL REPORT (revised)

Mission

The Rochester Land Trust, Inc. is a non-profit organization dedicated to land conservation, the preservation of Rochester’s rural character, the permanent conservation of open space, and the education of its citizens in the protection of the town’s natural resources.  The Trust acquires and holds real property for educational, recreational and conservation purposes in the interest of the public and promotes conservation easements on privately held land.  The Land Trust cares for and maintains land under its stewardship and assists the Town of Rochester in publicly funded land acquisitions.  The Rochester Land Trust holds its land to benefit the public today and for future generations.

Accomplishments

1.  Completed Phase III and Phase IV of the Eastover Farm Project with the Trustees of Reservation

-         760 acres permanently protected by the end of 2005 (in both Rochester and Marion)

-         TTOR is developing Management Goals for Public Recreation

-         RLT co-holds a Conservation Restriction with TTOR on 62 acres

2.  Citizens of Rochester received “Conservationists of the Year” Award from Trustees of Reservation for Eastover Farm Project at RLT Annual Meeting in March 2005.

3.  First Annual Business Partner of the Year Awards were presented to SEMASS and Rochester Golf Club at RLT Annual Meeting in March 2005.

4.  The Rounseville Homestead Project was completed in April with significant fund-raising support (over $60,000) from RLT.  This completed the Mattapoisett River Valley Aquifer Protection Project lead by the Coalition for Buzzards Bay.  The 164-acre Conservation Restriction is held by the Wildlands Trust of SE MA and the Town.

5.  RLT incurred its first debt, borrowing $15,000 from the Coalition for Buzzards Bay Revolving Fund in April to close on the Rounseville project.  RLT repaid the loan in September.

6.  RLT wrote its first grant application and was awarded $7500 from the Makepeace Neighborhood Fund to help complete the Rounseville Project.

7.  The Stewardship committee organized a “brush burn” with Mattapoisett Land Trust for Olde Field Farm.

8.  The Acquisitions Committee developed a list of “Priority Properties” for future conservation.  This committee reviewed the Conservation Restrictions on the Rounseville Homestead property and on the Eastover Farm property.  The committee also negotiated the gifts of a conservation restriction on 13.5 acres of Stephen Sperry’s woodlot, and the gift of 28 acres adjacent to the Center Village Condominiums.

9.   The Outreach Committee organized a Car Rally/Scavenger Hunt of Rochester’s Historic Sites.  Senior citizens were “auctioned” for their expertise and knowledge of Rochester’s history to help in the hunt!  This committee also organized the Third Annual Wine-Tasting held at the Rochester Golf Club in October.

10.  RLT had a booth at the Rochester Country Fair with lots of maps of the town that engendered conversation about land protection.  We held a raffle throughout the day that ended at the Eighth Annual Pig Roast that evening.

11.  RLT sent Herb Wood, a new Board Member, to the National Land Trust Rally in Madison WI in October.

12.  RLT joined Massachusetts Fish and Wildlife in hosting a reception in December for

George and Katherine Church to celebrate their conveyance of 163 acres of forest and woodlands along the Mattapoisett River for public recreation.

13.  RLT sponsored several walks on conservation property during the year.

  • Laurene Gerrior led us through the trails along Great Quiticus, a part of the Assawomsett Ponds complex, in search of eagles on April 24th.  This walk included sandwiches, treats and tours of the North Congregational Church, with proceeds to their Bell Tower Fund.
  • Laurene Gerrior and Norene Harley joined TTOR for an Eastover walk on June 11th.
  • RLT joined with the Rounseville family to sponsor the Second Annual Dog Walk through the Rounseville Homestead property on October 2nd.

14.  Membership in the Rochester Land Trust increased to over 140 individual, family and business members in 2005.

15.  We adopted Land Trust Alliance Standards and Practices.
