Marionette Generation Manga

Kinoko and Ranchi

Marionette Generation is a manga series about a lopsided romantic triangle between the manga illustrator Izumi, his wife Kinoko, and Ranchi, a small doll that has magically come to life.

This is the English-only version. There is also a version with Japanese.

Published in Newtype June 6, 1995.

Do you know who it is?

The story up to now:

Intimate friends who have at last married, Izumi and Kinoko have cleared away outside relationships. Naturally their relationship, "like older brother and younger sister," has become closer in this period. Seeing such two people, Ranchi became uneasy about where she fit in, and tried to get in at every opening. Izumi and Kinoko also found something was missing without her there. In the middle of the night, she woke Izumi with a phone call, and now she has been discovered sleeping in his futon!

Kinoko: "Wha..?"
Izumi: "Umm, ahh..?"
Kinoko: "Ran..chi?"
Ranchi "...How long have I been here?"
(Kinoko looks relieved).
Ranchi: "I have to come back."
Kinoko(yelling): "What are you trying to say!!"
Kinoko: "You mean you want to live here now."
Ranchi: "Yes."
Izumi: "If it's good for you to be with friends, then perhaps..."
(Kinoko slaps him).
Kinoko: "'Then perhaps' it is no good at all."
Kinoko: "Sometimes, in spite of myself I wish you would speak plainly!!"
Kinoko: "How can you be so indecisive in this business of Ranchi!?"

Kinoko picks up Ranchi to take her out of the room.

Kinoko: Here is ok, there is ok, everywhere is ok, and that's not the only thing..
It's clear if we go on like this...
I don't understand how you could say it, but...
because of this business of Ranchi and... and..

Kinoko leaves the room. Izumi sits by the futon, thinking over her words.
Izumi thinks: Here is ok, there is ok, everywhere is ok, and that's not the only thing......?

Kinoko walks with Ranchi on her shoulder on a pedestrain overpass. She recognizes a man with glasses, wearing a newsprint-covered sweater. (Sorry, I don't know his name yet).

Kinoko: You're up early to peep at schoolgirls, you degenerate!

He coughs.

Newsprint man: I want some company.
Kinoko: What do you want with Ranchi?
Newsprint man: You're together a lot.
