もののけ姫のフィルムコミック
"Princess Mononoke" is the adventures of Ashitaka, a young warrior in ancient Japan, who is on a quest to remove a curse put on him by a monster he fought.
This will put him into a strange relationship with San, the Princess Mononoke (the Spirit Princess), who was raised in the forest by a giant wolf.
This page is my translation of a Japanese film comic for the movie. The text of the comic is almost identical to the script of the movie.

Ashitakahiko, who destroyed the Tatarigami which suddenly attacked his village, receives its curse. According to the lady who advises him about his fate, he will be swallowed up by a vortex of one misfortune after another. We wonder, will Ashitaka be able to remove this curse......?!

人に 捨てられ、山犬にそだてられた少女、

エボシたちに攻撃をしかける。
This young woman was abandoned by people and raised by mountain wolves. She hates those who threaten the forest and she makes attacking raids against Tataraba and Eboshi's people.

北の 地の果てにひっそりとすむ、エミシ一族
おうけ ちすじ わかもの
王家の 血筋をひく若者。

This young man, who was living peacefully in the far north country, is related to the royal family of Emishi. On a journey because he received a death curse when he defeated a Tatarigami which suddenly came to attack his village.

An old medium who lives in a village of Emishi. She told Ashitaka, after he received the curse, to start on a journey to the West.

Priest Jiko

師匠連という 謎の 組織の 命により、シシ神の

By the command of the mysterious organization called the "Master Party," he seeks the head of Shishigami. He would do anything to accomplish this goal, even exploiting Eboshi and Ashitaka.
コダマ
Kodama
うた もり せいれい あわ みどりいろ
豊かな森にすむ精霊たちで、淡い 緑色をした
はんとうめい からだ
半透明の 体をもつ。
もり ひと たす
森に迷った人を 助けることもあるようだ。
These are spirits that live in the thick forest; they have light green semi-transparent bodies. It is said that they help people who are lost in the forest.

Moro, the she-wolf

森にすむ犬神で、サンをそだてた。

人間を 嫌い、つねにエボシを殺す 機会を

A wolf-god that lives in the forest; she raised San. Hating humans, she always seeks opportunities to kill Eboshi.
Movie Comic, part 1, Section 1: Ashitaka
くに ふか もり
むかしこの国は 深い 森におおわれ。
たいこ かみがみ
そこには太古からの神々がすんでいた。
Long ago, this country was covered with thick forests. The gods from ancient ages lived there.
It is a peaceful forest scene as the story opens, but there are some strange sounds in the woods.
フーフー
Pant, pant.
ガサガサ
Rustle, rustle.
ボキッバキッ

ズズズズ
A huge creature covered with a slithering mass of giant worms moves through
the forest, leaving the ground bare where it passes.

Ashitaka rides through the forest on a deer-yak. He carries
a bow, quiver, and short sword. He rides into a clearing and jumps up
on a wall, calling his mount to follow him.
アシタカ：ヤックル
Ashitaka: Yakkle.
He rides up to three young women on a walled path who are walking
towards the village. One of them is Kaya, a village girl who cares
deeply for him.
よ むら
Ashitaka: Good. Madame Hii said for everyone to come back to the
village.
い
Kaya: That's what Jiiji said, too.
やま
Kaya: He said there's something strange in the mountains.
ところ い
Ashitaka: Is that so? I'll go to Jiiji's place and have a look.
All of you, go back quickly.
女：ハイッ
Women: Yes sir!
Ashitaka rides to a wooden lookout tower overlooking the village. As he
climbs up he spots something moving in the woods.
く
Ashitaka: Something is coming.
He climbs up beside Jiiji, the elderly lookout.
アシタカ：じいじなんだろう。
Ashitaka: Jiiji, what could it be?
ひと
Jiiji: I know not. It's not human.
もら よ
Ashitaka:At the village, Madame Hii called everyone back.
き
Jiiji: It has come.
Ashitaka aims an arrow. Suddenly, the worm-covered monster both
slithers over and crashes through the wall!
がみ
Jiiji: It's a Tatarigami!
アシタカ：タタリ神？！
Ashitaka: A Tatarigami?!
[Note: the name "Tatarigami" means "curse god."]
Tatarigami charges forward, bellowing. Beneath the worms it looks
like a giant boar. The giant worms fly up into the air, and come
down around it in the form of a red-eyed giant spider. It crawls
towards the tower.
に
Ashitaka: Run, Yakkle!
But Yakkle is paralyzed with fear until Ashitaka shoots an arrow near
him to startle him into running. Tatarigami attacks the tower, its
worms forming tentacles that tear it to bits. Ashitaka leaps with
Jiiji into a tree. Tatarigami reforms into a spider on the rock
overlooking the village.

Ashitaka: It's going to the village. It wants to attack.
He climbs down the tree.
がみ て のろ
Jiiji: Don't meddle with the Tatarigami! You'll be cursed.
Ashitaka whistles for Yakkle, and rides off. He races down the
slope and gets in front of the god.
な
Ashitaka: Settle down, you! Why's a famous mountain god like
you're supposed to be acting up like this?
The three young women are still on their way to the village when they
see Tatarigami chasing Ashitaka across the field towards them.
女二：おばけ
Woman 2: A monster!
と むら
Ashitaka: Stop! Why are you attacking my village?
Cut it out! Settle down!
As the women flee from Tatarigami, one of them trips.
女二：アッ！
Woman 2: Ah!
カヤ：しっかり！
Kaya: Hold on!
The others gather around her and prepare to fight for their lives.
Ashitaka sees this, and shoots an arrow point-blank into one of
the monster's red eyes. It screams, and its tentacles thrash wildly.
はや
Ashitaka: Hurry!
A thick tentacle grabs his arm, but he tears it free. A bunch of the
worm-things cling around his right arm.
アシタカ：くっ！
Ashitaka: Uuh!
Even with the worms attacking his right arm, he manages another
shot, right into the exposed head of the boar. It falls, and the remaining
worms crawl away. The ones on his arm melt. A group of villagers
approach with torches and spears.
男ー：たおした！
Man 1: He killed it!
ひ
Man 2: Don't let the fire go out!
はや
Man 3: Get Madame Hii, quickly.
アシタカ：くっ
Ashitaka: Uuh!
あに あに
Kaya: Big brother! Big brother.
Ashitaka collapses from his mount.
きず
Ashitaka: Kaya, don't touch it. It's not an ordinary wound.
He is obviously in pain from his right arm. Kaya tries
to help.
てきず
Man 1: Ashitaka is wounded!
男ニ：ヒイさまは？
Man 2: Where's Madame Hii?
A man comes running up carrying Madame Hii on his back.
いじょう ちか
Madame Hii: Everyone! Don't get any closer!
She hands Kaya a gourd.
みず
Madame Hii: Pour this water on him slowly.
She does, and the water hisses from the wound as steam.
Madame Hii bows before the fallen god and begins to pray.
かみ そん
Madame Hii: I know not from whence you came,
angry spirit, but I humbly entreat to speak to you.
ち つか きず
Madame Hii: We will make a burial mound for you here, and make it
a shrine for your departed spirit.
わす
Madame Hii: I pray that your anger be calmed and forgotten.
The voice of Tatarigami snarls from the mouth of the dead boar:
にんげん くる にく
Tatarigami: Loathsome humans! You will know my wrath well
As the villagers watch in horror, the flesh dissolves from the
bones of Tatarigami, leaving only the skeleton.
That night, Ashitaka sits before Madame Hii and a council of
elders. She has arranged stones, bones, leaves, and so forth
on a cloth in front of her for fortune-telling.
こま
Madame Hii: Well, we have a problem. That boar came here from a
land to the far west. Because of the poison of a deep wound it ran
amok. Its body festered. As it was running here it
accumulated curses until it turned completely into a
Tatarigami. Ashitakahiko, show everyone your right arm.
アシタカ：はい
Ashitaka: Yes.
The elders gasp as they see the scars on his arm, burned-in marks of
the worms of Tatarigami.
じぶん きだま
Madame Hii: Ashitakahiko, are you prepared to be shown your fate?
がみ や い こころ
Ashitaka: Yes. When I shot the Tatarigami I had made my decision.
ほね
Madame Hii: That branding will soon penetrate to the bone. It
is likely to kill you.
老人ー：なんとか。なりませぬかヒイさま。
Elder 1: Can't you do something, Madame Hii?
だれ さだめ ま
Madame Hii: No one can change fate. But whether he just sits
and waits or whether he goes forth to meet it is up to him.
Madame Hii puts down a small round stone.
み からだ
Madame Hii: Look at this. This was inside the body of that
boar. It broke its bones, tore up its guts, and caused it cruel
agony. Otherwise, how could a boar have become a Tatarigami?...
にし くに ふきつ
Madame Hii: There is something sinister happening in the country to
the west. This is what you must do. If you go to that land
and examine everything with unclouded eyes, you may possibly find a way
to break the curse.
やまと いく ち ごひゃく
Elder 3: Since we were defeated by Yamato we have remained hidden in
this land for over 500 years. Now I hear that the king of Yamato
is powerless and power of the shoguns is also broken. However, the
blood of our family has also become weak. Perhaps it is fate that
now a young man who should become leader of our tribe make a journey to
the west.
Ashitaka draws a dagger and cuts off the topknot from his hair, as
the elders bow their heads in grief.
したが みおく すこ
Madame Hii: In accordance with the commandments, we will not see you
off. Take care of yourself.
Ashitaka leaves without a word. As he is riding out of the
village on Yakkle, Kaya calls out to him.
あに
Kaya: Big brother!
みおく きん
Ashitaka: Kaya! It is forbidden to see me off, you know.
カヤ：おしおきはうけます。どうかこれを。
Kaya: I'll take the punishment. Anyway, this is for you.
She gives him a small dagger made of glittering stone.
わたし とも
Kaya: Please let this be my proxy to go with you.
たいせつ ぎょく こがたな
Ashitaka: What's this? It's an important jeweled dagger, isn't it?
まも いき ふ
Kaya: It's to watch over you. I blew my breath into it.
I'll always, always be thinking of you, big brother.
おも
Ashitaka: The same with me. I'll always think of you, Kaya.
Ashitaka rides away as Kaya watches. He rides over the
mountains and across streams. He sees a valley where a fire is
burning.
いく
Ashitaka: A battle?!
He sees armed soldiers chasing civilian refugees. (One of the
refugees is Priest Jiko).
兵一：まわりこめ！
Soldier 1: Surround them!
兵二：カブト クビだ！！
Soldier 2: There's someone with a helmet!!
They see Ashitaka and start shooting arrows at him.
：アシタカ：もどれーっ！しょうぶしょうぶ！
Ashitaka: Go back! Fight, fight! (to Yakkle)
Ashitaka sees them attacking the refugees.
アシタカ：やめろーっ！
Ashitaka: Stop it!
He draws his bow, but suddenly his right arm bulges beneath the
sleeve as if the Tatarigami-worms were still on him. He draws the bow
harder than he ever has before. The arrow flies with supernatural
force, shearing off both the arms of one of the soldiers in an instant!
兵：うわっ！
Soldier: Aagh!
Ashitaka feels his arm.
うで
Ashitaka: What? What happened to my arm?!
に けんざん
Soldier 2: He won't get away! I see him!!
お じゃま
Ashitaka: I'm pushing through! Don't bother me!
He aims, and again a supernatural power takes over. This time, the
arrow takes off the lead soldier's head!
おに
Soldier 3: It's a demon...
Ashitaka rides away into the woods. He rinses his right arm in a stream.
こ
Ashitaka: The brand is getting darker......
Later. There is an open farmer's market in a large town. Priest Jiko is
slurping soup at a vendor's stall.
さゆ
Priest Jiko: This soup tastes like nothing but hot water.
Priest Jiko spots Ashitaka in the crowd.
ジコ坊：おっ。いたいた。ヘヘっ
Priest Jiko: Oh! It's him. Heh, heh.
Ashitaka is standing before a woman selling rice. He has taken some
rice, and is trying to pay for it with a small piece of gold. Jiko
comes up to intervene.
売り手：なんだいこりや？おアシじゃないじゃないか。
Vendor: What is this? This isn't money?
せっそう
Priest Jiko: Hold it, hold it, let me have a look.
This is a big grain of gold!
だいきん はら
Priest Jiko: If you'd rather have cash, I'll pay the bill.
I'll just take this in exchange. Hey, everybody! Is there
a money changer around here?
Ashitaka turns and leaves.
Jiko chases after Ashitaka as he rides out of town.
ジコ坊：お〜い！いそがれるな。
Priest Jiko: Hey! Don't be in such a rush.
He catches up.
れい もう き
Priest Jiko: I'm not asking for thanks. It is I who must thank
you. You saved me when I was caught up in that skirmish with those
country samurai. You were just like an vengeful god.
Ashitaka gives him a sharp look.
き ひとまえ さきん
Priest Jiko: Hoho! Did you notice? I showed that grain of
gold in public. Indeed, the hearts of men are entangled with
corruption.
There are three robbers on the road behind them.
ね
Priest Jiko: It's foolish to be caught napping. Shall we run?
They take off running.
強盗一：チッ
Robber 1: Blast!
That night, Jiko and Ashitaka camp in a cave. Jiko cooks
something over the campfire.
がみ
Priest Jiko: So a wild boar turned into a Tatarigami...
あしあと き さと
Ashitaka: I was following its tracks, but I lost them the moment I went down
into town.
み
Priest Jiko: Naturally. Look over there.
まえき むら
Priest Jiko: Last time I came through there was a reasonable village
here, but what with floods and landslides...no doubt many have died, not
to mention from war, poverty, disease, and starvation. The human world
is crowded by the dead, who died with their vengeance unfulfilled. If
you want to talk about a curse, this world itself is a curse.
さと ひと
Ashitaka: It was a mistake for me to go into the town. I've
already killed two people.
ひと し はや
Priest Jiko: All men eventually die sooner or later. Thanks to
you, I was saved. Please hand me your bowl. Ho, it's an
elegant bowl, isn't it? When I look at you it makes me think of
the people from ancient times in manuscripts that were handed down to
me. Here.
He hands Ashitaka the bowl of food.
ひがし は いし つか
Priest Jiko: In the farthest east there is a clan, the Emishi, who
became heroes, riding deer-yaks and using stone arrowheads...
The important thing is that you are not swallowed up by death!
Ashitaka takes out the round stone that Madame Hii gave him.
み
Ashitaka: Have you ever seen anything like this?
ジコ坊：これは？
Priest Jiko: What is it?
からだ
Ashitaka: It came out of the boar's body.
This is the thing that inflicted a deadly wound on a
giant boar.
Jiko takes the stone and examines it, then returns it.
いし やま すす
Priest Jiko: After this, when you go far, far west there is a thick
forest that people cannot penetrate in the recesses deep in the
mountains. It is the god Shihi's forest. There the animals
all grow as large as they were in ancient times, I heard.
Ashitaka considers this but does not reply. At dawn the next
morning he mounts Yakkle and leaves. Priest Jiko, who was still
sleeping, wakes up.
い
Priest Jiko: I expect he's going...
Far, far west, Eboshi leads a caravan along a steep rocky trail. It
is raining. Gonza, her general, is at her side.
ゆだん
Eboshi: Everyone, it's only a little further. Be careful!
いぬかみ
Soldier: The've come out! It's the wolf-gods!
Two large white wolves are running towards them. On the first one,
a girl dressed in white fur with a red, horned mask is riding.
じん
Eboshi: Form battle ranks without rushing!
The men prepare hand-held gunpowder cannons.
かやく
Gonza: Don't be hasty and get your gunpowder wet!
ゴンザ：じゅうぶんにひきよすよ！
Gonza: Draw them in close enough!
いちばん
Eboshi: First group, fire!
They miss, and the wolves keep coming.
にばん
Eboshi: Second group, fire!
ばけもの くち
Gonza: These "monsters" have a bark worse than their bite.
こ ははおや こ
Eboshi:They're only cubs. Why didn't their mother come?
Suddenly, a much larger white wolf leaps in from the side!
エボシ：モロだ！モロ！来い！！
Eboshi: It's Moro! Moro! Come!!
Eboshi gets her own gun ready. Soldiers fire at Moro as she
charges through the caravan straight for Eboshi. Several people
are wounded and fall down the slope.
Eboshi fires at point-blank range, hitting Moro in the neck. Other
soldiers fire and hit it from the sides. Moro falls off a cliff and
lies still.
ゴンザ：やりました！
Gonza: We killed it!
ふじみ し
Eboshi: That thing is immortal. She won't die from something
like this!
Gonza looks over the damaged caravan.
Gonza: On our side, we took considerable damage.
しゅっぱつ たいれつ
Eboshi: Quickly, let us depart. Re-form ranks.
Ashitaka comes upon one of Eboshi's cattle drivers and one of her
soldiers floating in the stream. He pulls both of them to the
bank. (The cattle driver, who is the less injured of the two, is
named Kouroku.)
アシタカ：しっかりしろ！！
Ashitaka: Hold on!
Yakkle notices something, and Ashitaka goes to look. On the other
side of the stream, San and the two young wolves come up to the wounded
Moro. San sucks at Moro's neck wound. Moro and San notice Ashitaka,
and he jumps up to speak to them.
な ひがし は ち き
Ashitaka: My name is Ashitaka. I have come to this land from the farthest
east. Are you the ancient spirits that I have heard live in Shishigami's forest?!
They stare at him, and turn to leave.
さ
San: Go! (To the wolf she is riding)
Ashitaka turns back to the wounded men when he hears Kouroku crying
out because a strange little manlike creature is nearby.
甲六：あわわわわ……
Kouroku:Wa-wa-wa-wa...!
アシタカ：コダマ？！ここにもコダマがいるのか。
Ashitaka: Kodama?! There are Kodama even here?
うご きず
Ashitaka: (to Kouroku) Stay still! If you move you'll reopen your wounds!
Let them do as they like, they won't do any harm. They are a sign of the abundance of the forest.
がみ よ
Kouroku: Those things will call Shishigami!
おお やまいぬ
Ashitaka: Is that a big mountain wolf?
ばけもの おやだま
Kouroku: No! It's much worse than that. It's the lord of
the monsters!
きけん ちか
Kouroku: (to a Kodama) Keep away, you dangerous thing!
もり
Ashitaka: (to a Kodama) Pardon me, but we could use your help getting
through the forest.
They start off, with Kouroku on Yakkle and Ashitaka carrying the other man
on his back.
ぎし
Kouroku: Please. Let's turn back! The road is on the other side of the river. Why are we going through the forest? This is crazy.
なが つよ わた にん
Ashitaka: The current is too strong, so we can't cross. Besides that, if we don't
hurry it will be too late for this wounded man.
みちあんない まよ き
Ashitaka: (To the Kodama ahead) Are you guiding us? Or are you tricking us?
The Kodama runs ahead, and Ashitaka follows, struggling with the weight of the wounded man on his back.
かえ き
Kouroku: Sir -- Those things don't want us to get home! More and more of them are coming.
ははおや りっぱ き
Ashitaka: (to Kodama) Is this your mother? It's a magnificent tree.
[Note: Kodama are tree spirits. In legend they are the source of echoes.]
(He laughs as two Kodama imitate him carrying the man piggy-back.)
They reach a clearing with a mossy lake. Ashitaka sees large wolf tracks with a human footprint.
しょうじょ やまいぬ あしあと
Ashitaka: It's the tracks of that girl and the wolf!
甲六：ダンナ…
Kouroku: Sir...
かれ
Ashitaka: Is this their territory?...
よ い ぐち
Kouroku: Now we're in danger! Here is the entrance to another world!
やす
Ashitaka: It looks that way, doesn't it? Let's take a little rest.
As Ashitaka goes for water, he sees a large three-toed footprint in
which butterflies are resting.
あしあと みっ あたら
Ashitaka: Footprints...? It has three hooves... It's still fresh.
He looks in every direction, and far off he sees deer passing. One
appears to have strange branched antlers. Suddenly, his right arm
squirms with the curse of Tatarigami! Fighting it, he plunges his arm into
the water.
甲六：だ、ダンナ！どうしたんで
Kouroku: S-sir! What's wrong?
アシタカ：くっ！
Ashitaka: Aagh!
Finally, the curse subsides as the strange creature goes away.
アシタカ：ハァハァ
Ashitaka: Haah, haah! (Painting with the strain)
だいじょうぶ かおいろ
Kouroku: Sir, are you all right? Your face is dead white!
なに み
Other Man: Did you see something?
アシタカ：エッ……いや いい…… 行ってしまった
Ashitaka: Huh?...No, it's all right...It's gone now.
They set off again.
甲六：アレッいたくねぇ？！
Kouroku: Ah! It doesn't hurt?!
きゅう からだ
Ashitaka: (thinks) How can this be?! This man has suddenly
gotten easier to carry since we left that place.
お
Kouroku: (waves arm in the air) I'm healed! Ow ow ow! It's broken, like I
thought before.
Finally, they get out of the woods.
甲六：ダンナすげえ タタラについた！
Kouroku: Sir, we made it! We've reached Tatara!

Kouroku:It's Lady Eboshi's great tatara. They're smelting iron
sand and making iron.
[Note: The word "tatara" means a foot-driven bellows, used in a
blast furnace. The city name is Tataraba, place of the tatara.]
Ashitaka pulls the lower part of his hood over his mouth.

Boatman 1: People are coming out of the forest.
ボート人二：もののけか？
Boatman 2: Are they spirits?
うしか こうろく
Kouroku: It's me! Kouroku the cowherd!
In Tataraba, the story spreads.
人一：なにィ甲六が……
Person 1: Whaat? Kouroku is...

Person 2: It isn't his ghost?
人三：カカァにしらせろ
Person 3: Tell his wife.
ふね
Person 4: It's true! They're coming here in a boat right now.
In one of the palace rooms, a messenger comes to Gonza.

Gonza: What's this!? You must be quiet while I'm writing!

Messenger: Kouroku, who was supposed to be dead, appeared from the
other shore.
Ashitaka, Kouroku, and the other man arrive in Tataraba by
boat. Yakkle swims across. They are met by a crowd of people
and a band of orange-uniformed soldiers.

Person 1: You really aren't ghosts!

Person 2: What's with this other guy?
Yakkle shakes water off his coat, getting drops on a soldier nearby.

Soldier: Hey!

Kouroku: We're the only ones who were saved.

Other Man: People of the stone-fire-arrows! This man carried me a
long way on his back! Give him thanks!
Gonza watches from above as someone asks him:

Man: Lord Gonza, who could that hooded man be?
Gonza:I've never seen anyone like him.
One of the soldiers bows in thanks to Ashitaka.

Gonza: You there, hold it!
Gonza comes down the slope to the shore.

Gonza: First of all, I thank you for bringing in the wounded men.

Gonza: But I am not convinced. You came less than an hour after
we arrived here. And yet you supposedly came from the bottom of
the valley carrying a full-grown man on your shoulders through
Shishigami's forest...
He is interrupted by a woman yelling. It is Kouroku's wife, Toki.
こうろく い
Toki: Kouroku! You came back alive?
うしか あし
Toki: You bum! What were you doing, a cowherd spraining your leg like this?
How are we going to eat?

Kouroku: But I couldn't help it...
しんぱい やまいぬ
Toki: You always make me worry about you. I'd rather the wolves
had eaten you up. Then I could find a better man.
甲六：おトキ〜カンニンしてくれよ〜
Kouroku: Toki -- please forgive me --

Gonza: Toki -- couldn't you quarrel with your husband somewhere else?
ごえい
Toki: (to Gonza) Who are you to act so big? What was the use
of your guarding? It's your responsibility. You don't even
put one foot on the bellows. In an emergency like that you've got
to risk your life.
ゴンザ：しかたがなかろう…
Gonza: This is useless...

Toki: (to Ashitaka) Thank you. He's a poor sort of husband, but I'm glad
you saved him.

Ashitaka: (kidding) I'm glad you said that. I was getting
worried that I was wrong to bring him along.

Eboshi: Gonza! Later on I wish to thank him. You will escort our guest to me.
ゴンザ：エボシさま。
Gonza: Lady Eboshi.

Eboshi: Kouroku, I'm happy that you got home safely. I'm sorry
for your troubles. Toki also, forgive me. It shames me that
I was there and could do nothing.

Toki: No, if it were just up to the men they'd all be together in the belly of the
wolf by now.

Eboshi: Traveler, you may rest with us.
Ashitaka takes down his mask.

Toki: Hey, you're a good-looking guy!
At night fall, bells sound and the people working outside the city walls come in.
The massive gate is shut for the night.

Gatekeeper: Theere.
Rice is distributed to the people.

Man: Here's the rice we fought off Moro to bring to you. Eat it gratefully!
Women look into the building where the men are eating.
女一：どこどこ？
Woman 1: Where is he? Where is he?

Woman 2: Oh? That man?

Woman 3: It's true. He's just like Toki said.

Woman 4: Handsome guy, isn't he?

Woman 1: We'd better powder our faces before we tread the bellows.

All the women laugh. They start leaving.
女三：きっとだよ―
Woman 3: Be sure to come --
女四：まってるからね〜
Woman 4: We'll be waiting for you --

Man 1:Sir, please don't take offense.

Man 2: Lady Eboshi overindulges them.

Ashitaka: I hear when women have high spirits it's a good village.

Man 3: Well... it's not so good that women are here in
Tataraba at all.

Man 4: Most of us think they will make the iron impure,
so we don't like it.
男一：おっ！はじめやがった。
Man 1: Hey! Now he's gotten started. (Looking at a man
across the room who is dancing drunkenly).

Man 1: When Lady Eboshi sees young women being sold into prostitution
she reaches out and gets them out of it.

Man 2: On the other hand, she has absolutely no fear of laws or curses.

Man 5: That's so. I want to tell you about the time she defeated
Lord Nago.

Ashitaka: Lord Nago?
Everyone laughs.
男五：すげえでかいイノシシでよ。このあたりのヌシだったのよ。
Man 5: It's an amazingly huge wild boar. It was the master of the area around here.
No one could get near the mountain. Humans could only look and long for the
rich mountain.

Man 3: Because we had already used up all the iron sand from the river delta.
Ashitaka looks grim. People around him look surprised.

Man 5: Many skilled men of Tataraba wished to get there. They were all defeated.
As the man tells the story, we see a flashback to that time.
People are logging at night and are camping around a fire.
Suddenly, the boar Nago attacks, tearing up their camp. The army
shoots flaming arrows but they are useless against the gigantic boar.

Man 5: Because our industry is based on strip-mining the mountain
and cutting trees, the mountain lord was angry. Then Lady Eboshi
suddenly appeared, bringing soldiers with stone-fire-arrows.
The scene shows Nago and his army of wild boars crashing into the
village. Then Eboshi and her army arrive with the guns. They
shoot, and the boars are driven back. Nago is wounded.
Eboshi looks down as the forest burns.
Ashitaka's arm bulges and he has to hold it down.
男二：ダンナ どうしたんで？
Man 2: Sir, what's wrong?

Ashitaka: I was thinking about the boar. I wonder where he ended up?
His rage must have been deep.
Later, Ashitaka meets with Eboshi and Gonza. Eboshi is hammering
something out of a piece of soft metal.
エボシ：アシタカとやるまたしてすまぬな。あすのおくりの
Eboshi: Sorry to keep you waiting, Ashitaka, if that's your name.
Working on tomorrow's deliveries takes a lot of time.

Eboshi: This is a nice piece of steel.

Eboshi: Let's take a break.

Eboshi: Some people suspect you are one of the enemy samurai,
or an agent of the forest spirits. There are many who want to take
over Tataraba. Will you tell us the purpose of your journey?
Ashitaka unwraps his arm and reveals its dark, mottled color. He
shows them the round stone that Madame Hii gave him.
アシタカ：このつぶてにおぼえがあるはず。
Ashitaka: I expect that you recognize this stone bullet.
きょだい がみ ほね にく くさ
Ashitaka: This is the bullet that broke the bones of a gigantic boar-god,
caused its flesh to rot, and turned it into a Tatarigami.
アシタカ：このアザはそのイノシシにとどめをさした
Ashitaka: This mark is a curse leading to death that the boar gave me
when I put an end to it.

Eboshi: What country are you from? You were riding a beast we
have never seen before.

Ashitaka: From a region northeast of here... more than that I cannot say.

Gonza: Why you..! Give a straight answer or I'll kill you!
(He starts to draw his sword).

Eboshi: What will you do when you find out the secret of the bullet?

Ashitaka: I will examine everything with unclouded eyes, and then
decide!
Eboshi bursts out laughing.
エボシ：フフ アーっハハハハ ハハわかった。
Eboshi: Heh heh Ahahaha Haha... I see. Let me show you my
secrets. Come along.
エボシ：ゴンザ！あとをたのむよ。
Eboshi: Gonza! Please take care of the rest.
She leads Ashitaka away from the astonished Gonza. They walk
past the blast furnace and the women operating the bellows. They
enter an enclosed compound with its own garden.

Eboshi: Everyone is afraid to come near here. This is my
garden. Come, if you want to know my secrets.
She leads him into the main building in the compound. Inside
eight men, with faces, hands, and arms wrapped completely in white cloth
(because of their leprosy), are making guns with wood and
metal-working tools.
癩病患者一：ちょうどくみあがったところですよ。
Leper 1: We just finished assembling it.
She picks up a rifle the men have made.
エボシ：まだちょっとおもいな。
Eboshi: It's still fairly heavy.

Leper 1: When we pare it down a little the copper splits.

Eboshi: These won't just be for my use. I'm going to have
all the women here carry them.

Leper 2: Hohoho, won't that be a sight?
もの こうあん あたら いしびや
Eboshi: These are new stone-fire-arrows that these men
invented. The Chinese ones are heavier and harder to use.
With these stone-fire-arrows we'll be able to smash both monsters
and armored samurai.

Leper 2: Scary, scary. Lady Eboshi plans to tear down the
country. (joking)

Eboshi: Sorry I hurried you. Later I'll send you over some sake.

Ashitaka: You mean to say that, not content with stealing from the
forest of the mountain god and creating a cursed god, you're
going to bring on new wrath and curses with these stone-fire-arrows?!

Eboshi: My heart bleeds for you. That bullet was certainly one
that I fired. That stupid boar! If he was going to curse
someone it should have been me.
Ashitaka's right arm bulges and goes for his sword. He can
barely hold it back. The lepers are shocked, but Eboshi appears
calm.

Eboshi: Is your right arm trying to kill me?

Ashitaka: If the curse went down I would do it myself.
But my arm wouldn't stop with that.
もの ころ
Eboshi: It wouldn't rest until you killed everyone here?
There is a red aura of anger around Ashitaka. One of the lepers,
who is lying on a pallet on the floor, speaks up.

Chief Leper: Lady Eboshi, don't underestimate that young man's strength.

Leper 3: Chief!

Chief Leper: Young man, I also have a cursed body. (Cough)

Chief Leper: She is the only person who ever treated us like
human beings. She was not afraid of our sickness. She washed
our rotting flesh and bandaged us with cloth.

Chief Leper: It is truly painfully hard to live...
I curse the world and I curse man, but still I want to live...
Won't you please, for my poor foolish sake...
Later, Ashitaka and Eboshi are standing on the roof of the assembly
building looking out over the city walls. She looks out over the
clear-cut slopes and sees orangutan creatures. She fires at
them with the new gun, scaring them off.

Eboshi: They came back again?

Eboshi: They do that when night falls; they come and plant trees in
order to reclaim the mountain.

Eboshi: Ashitaka, would you stay and work with us here?

Ashitaka: You intend to steal even Shishigami's forest?!
もり ひかり はい やまいぬ
Eboshi: If we let light into the forest and the wolves are quieted,
this will become a rich country. If the ancient gods are gone,
the spirit creatures will become ordinary animals. And if they do,
the Spirit Princess will also return to being human.

Ashitaka: The Spirit Princess...

Eboshi: She's a poor helpless girl whose soul was stolen by a wolf.
She continually tries to kill me.

A leper calls up from the room below.

Eboshi: Excellent work. It's indeed suitable for tearing down the
country, but as I thought, it's a little heavy.
Ashitaka walks to the furnace room. Ten women, five on a side,
are pushing on a pivoting platform with their feet while pulling on
ropes above their heads. This is the tatara, the bellows that
pumps air to the blast furnace. Other women are on the side
resting. One is Toki.
トキ：あらっ？！あんた。
Toki: Hey, it's you?!
アシタカ：おトキさんわたしもふませてくれ。
Ashitaka: Toki, please let me tread the bellows also.
アシタカ：くわってくれないか。
Ashitaka: (to one of the working women) Would you let
me take your place?
トキ：せっかくだからかわってもらいな。
Toki: Better take advantage of his offer and let him take your place.
Ashitaka does, and pushes down with great force, making the bellows go much
deeper than usual.

Woman 1: What amazing strength!

Toki: He's a great guy, isn't he? He really came.
If you work that hard on the machine you won't be able to keep it
up, traveler.

Ashitaka: It's hard work, isn't it?

Toki: That's right. We keep treading for four days and five nights.
アシタカ：ここのくらしはつらいか？
Ashitaka: Is it a hard life here?

Toki: A bit... but compared to our former lives this is much

Ashitaka gives another deep push on the bellows, and the women laugh.
女二：男がいばらないしさ。
Woman 2: And the men don't bother us!
アシタカ：そうか……
Ashitaka: Is that so...

アシタカ：わが名はアシタカ。東の 果てよりこの地へ来た。

甲六：こんどこそヤバですよ。ここはあの世の入り口だ！
アシタカ：そうだな。ちょっと休もう。
アシタカ：足跡……？！ひずめが三つ……まだ新しい
甲六：ダンナ大丈夫ですかい。顔色がまっ青ですぜ

アシタカ：なぜだ？！あれから急に 身体がかるくなった
甲六：なおった〜イテテテやっぱり折れてる
アシタカ：まるで城だな。
