Princess Mononoke Film Comic Translation, Volume 2

Mononoke image

"Princess Mononoke" is the adventures of Ashitaka, a young warrior in ancient Japan, who is on a quest to remove a curse put on him by a monster he fought.

This will put him into a strange relationship with San, the Princess Mononoke (the Spirit Princess), who was raised in the forest by a giant wolf.

This page is my translation of a Japanese film comic for the movie. The text of the comic is almost identical to the script of the movie. This page has the translation of the second volume of the film comic.

San rides one of the young wolves through the woods as the orangutans watch. As they near Tataraba, one wolf growls, and she pats its head. She puts on her mask.

At the furnace, Ashitaka is taking his leave of the women.

Woman 1: Do you really have to leave tomorrow?

Woman 2: It would be good if you stayed longer.

Woman 3: You could work here!

Ashitaka: Thank you, but there is someone I must meet at all costs.

The wolf San is riding rushes the wall of Tataraba. Ashitaka hears her.

Ashitaka: She's coming!!

The watch sounds an alarm.

Watch: It's the Spirit Princess!!

The wolf evades enemy gun shots and launches San up the wall, over the wooden spikes at the bottom. She sticks her spear into the wall and scales over the top.

Guard: Aah!

The guard swings his spear at her, but she evades and knocks him off the wall. She leaps over the rooftops, avoiding more shots. Ashitaka runs below, and when she leaps down in front of him he tries to talk to her as she slashes at him with her knife.

Man: The Princess!

Ashitaka: Stop! Uhh! I don't want to fight you!!

She can't get past his defenses, so she flips back and jumps up on to the roof again.

Man: (to the soldiers who just ran up) The only one who got in was the Princess. She's heading to the palace!

Ashitaka climbs to the roof and runs after her.

Gonza and Eboshi supervise the handing out of weapons.

Gonza: Light more torches! Stone-fire-arrow men, secure the wall!

Man: (To men taking weapons) Don't leave your posts!

Inside the furnace room, some of the women have spears in their hands.

Woman: They say that she came over our roof.

Toki: Be quiet! Keep treading without a break! We can't afford to let the fire go down.

Back at the weapon depot:

Eboshi: She's alone?

Gonza: Yes. It appears we have her completely cornered. This may be what you were aiming for, Lady Eboshi.

Eboshi: There's no other way.

Eboshi: (To two women carrying the new guns) Come along.

Eboshi comes to a lighted open square and calls out.

Eboshi: Spirit Princess! Can you hear me? Here I am! If you want to carry out your clan's revenge, there are people here also whose hearts are set on revenge for grief over their husbands who were devoured by the wolves. Show yourself! We will finish this on this very night.

Suddenly Princess Mononoke appears on a rooftop overlooking the square.

People: She came out! There she is!

Ashitaka: (thinking) Is she crazy!?

Gonza: Open up in front! You could get hit by a stray bullet!

Ashitaka sees soldiers on the sides preparing to fire at San.

Ashitaka: It's a trap! (yelling) Stooop!

Ashitaka: Princess of of the wolves, go back to the forest! Don't die for nothing. There is also courage in retreat.

Gonza: That rat! Just as I suspected.

Eboshi: Let him do as he likes.

Suddenly San starts running down the slope.

Ashitaka: Agh!

He runs to intercept her as the soldiers fire from ambush. A shot hits right in front of her. Ashitaka also gets a near miss, but he deflects some of the flying roof splinters with his strengthened arm. San rolls down the roof, slowing her fall by grabbing as she rolls.

Gonza: We did it! She's going to fall.

Eboshi: (to the women with guns beside her) Hold still.

Eboshi: A wolf can still bite when only its head is left!

Eboshi: Take aim just after she falls!

Ashitaka, using his enhanced strength, rips a huge beam from the roof. San falls, and picks herself up from the ground.

Eboshi: Fire.

The shot shatters San's mask, stunning her.

Gonza: We did it!

Ashitaka: Don't move!

He heaves the beam down in front of them, smashing a torch stand and preventing more attacks on San for a moment. He leaps down to her.

Gonza: Ouch, that's hot! (sparks from the torch landed on him)

Ashitaka: Hold on!

San: Uuuh!

San wakes up and sees Ashitaka standing over her. She slashes at him, nicking his face. Then she rushes past him. The soldiers, led by Gonza, try to stop her.

Ashitaka: Stop! (to San)

Gonza slashes at her with his sword, but she leaps up over his blade.

Gonza: What?

San plants a foot in Gonza's face and jumps over them. Then she rushes at Eboshi.

San: Raagh!

Eboshi fights with a long sword and dagger. San, fighting with a dagger alone, is soon on the defensive. The crowd around her forms a circle of spears.

San: Grraa!

Person 1: She's caught like a mouse in a trap!

Person 2: Don't let her escape!

Person 3: Kill her!

As Ashitaka watches in a rage, his arm swells again with strength. Now ghostly Tatarigami-worms writhe around it.

A man helps Gonza, who had been knocked out. His other men have gone to watch the fight.

Man: Lord Gonza, please wake up...

Gonza: Don't bother about me! Go!!

Ashitaka walks forward. Gonza sees the supernatural worms.

Gonza: You... I was right about you... Are you some kind of spirit? Halt!

Ashitaka: Get out of my way.

Gonza points his sword at Ashitaka, who easily bends the blade in his fingers. Ghostly worms remain on the blade, terrifying Gonza. Ashitaka pushes into the circle around San and Eboshi.

Man: Augh! What are you doing?

Ashitaka walks up to the fight. He grabs San's wrist in his strong right hand, and holds back Eboshi's sword with his own sword in his left hand.

Eboshi: What are you trying to do, Ashitaka?

Ashitaka: I want you to spare this girl's life.

Eboshi: You want to marry that wolf?!

San bites at Ashitaka's arm to try to get him to release her.

Ashitaka: There's an evil spirit in you as well as in her.

The glowing Tatarigami snakes appear all over Ashitaka's arm. Everyone is frightened.

Ashitaka: Look, everyone! This is the manifestation of hatred and wrath that has been dwelling in my body. It is a curse that corrupts my flesh and calls death to me! Don't get yourselves wrapped up in hatred any more!!

Eboshi: Don't cleverly take advantage by showing off your little misfortune.

San: Aaah! Waaah! (Pulling back from the snakes).

Eboshi: I'll cut your right arm off for you!!

She attacks with the dagger in her left hand. Ashitaka clubs her in the midsection with the pommel of his sword, knocking her out. Then he knocks out San. He holds one of them in each arm.

Kiyo: (one of the gunners) Lady Eboshi!

Ashitaka: Someone come and lend a hand.

A woman comes forward from the crowd and takes Eboshi from Ashitaka's arm.

Ashitaka: Don't worry. She'll wake up quickly.

Ashitaka: I'm taking this girl away with me.

Kiyo: (pointing her gun at Ashitaka) Hold it! You're not getting away! Not after what you did to Lady Eboshi...

Ashitaka looks sadly at her, then turns his back and walks away.

Kiyo: Don't move!

Woman: Kiyo! Stop!

When the woman grabs at the gun, the charge goes off. Ashitaka is shot in the back, but he keeps right on going.

Woman 3: He keeps on walking even though he's hit......

Ashitaka carries San past Gonza, who has nothing but a bent sword to stop him. Gonza backs off.

Gonza: Bring me my stone-fire-arrow!

Women outside the furnace room see Ashitaka coming.

Woman: Toki! Come quick!!

Toki: (to Ashitaka) You?!

Toki sees that Ashitaka is leaving a trail of blood. At the gate, men try to stop him.

Man 1: Sir, you can't go through here. You can't open the gate without permission.

Soldier: You saved our comrade. I don't want to have you become an enemy. Please go back.

Ashitaka: I came here on my own. I will leave on my own two feet.

Man 1: Sir! Don't go! You'll die!!

As he presses on the huge wooden gate with his supernaturally strong arm, it begins to move.

Man 2: It moved!

Man 3: Amazing

Gonza arrives with a squad of soldiers with stone-fire-arrows.

Gonza: Out of the way!!

Gonza grabs a gun, but he has no fire to light it. As Ashitaka lifts the gate higher, they see the two wolves running forwards.

Gonza: It's the wolves!

Ashitaka: (to the wolves) Stop! Your Princess is all right!!

Ashitaka: I'm coming out now. Let's go, Yakkle.

Ashitaka: (to the people) Thanks for your hospitality.

The gate slams shut behind him.

Man 1: He was able to get clean away.

Section 2: Wolves

Ashitaka holds San on Yakkle as they ride into the hills. The wolves chase them. San wakes up as Ashitaka faints from loss of blood and falls from Yakkle's back. One of the wolves bites at his head.

San: Wait!! He's my prey.

Yakkle bucks her off and she runs back to them.

San: You were shot, weren't you? Are you going to die? Answer me before you die! Why did you interfere with me?

Ashitaka: I didn't want you to be killed.

San: I'm not afraid to die! I'd give my life to drive away the humans!

Ashitaka: I understand... I did from the first time we met.

San grabs Ashitaka's sword.

San: I'll cut your throat so you'll never waste your breath babbling like that again!

Ashitaka: Stay alive...

San: You dare to keep talking? I don't take orders from humans!

Ashitaka: You're beautiful...

San is astonished. She backs away.

Wolf 1: (to San, telepathically) What's wrong, San? Shall I chomp him for you?

Just then, a rock lands near Ashitaka, thrown by one of a large group of orangutans that has appeared on the hill.

San: Ha. The Orangutans...

Wolf 1: You dare insult us, the clan of Moro?!

Orangutan 1: This our forest.

Orangutan 2: Give that human.

Orangutan 3: Give human, leave quick.

Wolf 2: Beat it!! Before I get my teeth into you!

Orangutan 1: We eat human.

Orangutan 2: We eat that human.

Orangutan 3: Give us human to eat.

San: You're known as the wise ones of the forest; why would you do such a thing as eating a human?

Orangutan 1: Want power to defeat humans, so we eat.

San: If you eat a human you won't get the power of a human. It will just pollute your blood.

Orangutan 1: Planted trees...

Orangutan 2: Plant trees...

Orangutan 3: Humans pull them all out. Forest not come back.

Orangutan 4: Want to kill humans.

San: The great Shishigami is on our side. Don't give up planting trees... the Moro clan will keep fighting until the end.

Orangutan 1: The great Shishigami not fight. We die. You don't care, Wolf Princess...because you human.

Wolf 1: Insolent monkeys! I'll bite your heads off!!

The wolves rush at the orangutans, who run away.

San: Stop!!

San: I don't care... it doesn't bother me... You two go on home ahead. I'll deal with this human.

Wolf 2: What about him? May we eat him? (Looking at Yakkle).

San: You must not eat him! Well, go on then!

San: (calling Yakkle) Hey, come here! Let's make peace! Please help by carrying your master.

Yakkle comes over and San puts Ashitaka on its back. They go to the pool the Kodama showed Ashitaka before. Many of the Kodama gather around. San cuts a small tree sprig.

San: (to Yakkle) Come on...

Yakkle wades near a small island and San drags Ashitaka to the bank and sticks the sprig above his head as a sign to Shishigami.

San: (to Yakkle) You're really smart, aren't you? It's better that you don't climb up onto this island.

(She sniffs at her arm) Human scent.

San takes the bridle off of Yakkle.

San: Go where you want and live as you want.

Priest Jiko 2

As the day dawns, hordes of the Kodama gather in the trees. They rattle their heads in a mass signal, and the Didarabocchi, a gigantic transparent creature, walks toward them.

In the woods, Priest Jiko (disguised in a bear skin) and two other men (disguised in boar skins) watch the creature.

Priest Jiko: Oh, he's come out. The Didarabocchi!! At last we've found him. (One other man is hiding his eyes). What are you doing? Take a peek, why don't you? What was the point of putting on these stinking skins if you don't follow through?

Man: If we look upon the great Shishigami our eyes will be crushed!

Priest Jiko: You idiot, you're supposed to be the best hunter in the west country? Do you know what's in this imperial court document here? It's the emperor's approval to exterminate the Shishigami!! The Didarabocchi is the night form of the Shishigami. Now that night is over he will soon convert into his day form. There's Shishigami's dwelling.

They see the Didarabocchi sink down into a clearing.

Priest Jiko: Oh, he's going to vanish. That's the place!!

In the clearing, Yakkle is still standing in the water near the island. Shishigami comes walking across the island. Plants spring up and then die with his footsteps. He breathes on the plant above Ashitaka's head and it dries out instantly.

Meanwhile, Priest Jiko and his men sneak closer, into a camouflaged shelter they have made. Another man is waiting there.

Man 2: Priest Jiko, sir...

Priest Jiko: I know.

Man 2: Look over there.

Priest Jiko: Oh, what's this?

A large herd of boars runs along the bottom of a rocky cliff in the distance.

Priest Jiko: There're quite a large number of them, aren't there?

Man 2: Those aren't boars from this forest. Each one of them is the lord of some famous mountain.

Then they see an old gray boar at the top of the cliff.

Priest Jiko: Hey, what's that?

Man 2: It's the Overlord of Chinzei!!

Priest Jiko: Chinzei? You mean to say they came from across the ocean?

Man 2: No doubt about it. That four-tusker! He's come leading his whole clan, blast him!

Suddenly the Overlord gives a hard stare in their direction.

Man 2: We're spotted!

Priest Jiko: Retreat, quick!!

The Overlord gives a loud squeal, and the other boars answer. Priest Jiko and his men run away down a rocky stream bed.

Priest Jiko: Hurry!!

Ashitaka 2

In a dream, Ashitaka remembers being touched by Shishigami. He wakes up in the clearing. Yakkle is standing beside him.

Ashitaka: Uh. Uuuh.

He feels his chest.

Ashitaka: My wound is gone!! (He notices Yakkle) Yakkle.

As he raises his right hand to pet Yakkle, he see the dark brand has spread up to his hand. Shishigami did nothing for his death-curse. He sinks back in despair.

Just then, San arrives.

San: Since you've come to your senses, you should thank Yakkle. He's been guarding you all this time.

Ashitaka: How do you know his name...?

San: He's told me a few things about himself, and about you and the forest around your village, too. The great Shishigami has revived you, so I'll help you.

Ashitaka: I had a strange dream. It was of a golden stag....

San: Eat.

She puts a strip of dried meat in his mouth, but he is too weak to chew it.

San: Chew!

He coughs and spits it out. She chews the meat for him and gives it to him mouth to mouth. He is so touched by this that tears fill his eyes.

Ashitaka: You...

Moro the she-wolf arrives with the two young wolves, and so does the herd of wild boars.

Boar 1: We have come to kill the humans to protect the forest. Why are there humans here?!

Moro: This is my daughter. There are humans everywhere. Go back to your own mountain. There you can kill all you want.

Boar 1: We will kill to protect Shishigami's forest! Why are there humans here?...

San: Shishigami healed this human's wound. Therefore we will send him back and not kill him.

Boar 1: You say the great Shishigami helped and healed a human?!

Boar 2: Why didn't he help Lord Nago?!

Boar 3: Isn't Shishigami the guardian god of the forest?!

Moro: Shishigami both gives and takes life. Have you forgotten even that, you herd of boars?

Boar 1: Wrong, it's because you wolves keep Shishigami all to youselves. It's because you betrayed Nago by not helping him!!

Moro: He was afraid of death, as I am now. I have also been hit by the human's poisoned bullets. Nago ran away; I didn't, and I am facing my own death.

San: Moro, then Shishigami...

Moro: San! I have already lived long enough. Shishigami will not heal my wound but may suck up my life instead.

San: That can't be! Mother, you have been protecting Shishigami.

Boar 1:You don't fool us! Nago was our wonderful strong brother!! You wolves must have eaten him!!

San: Shut up! I won't forgive insults to my mother!

Ashitaka: Angry mountain gods, please listen to me!! I was the one who gave the finishing stroke to Lord Nago. I had no choice but to kill the Tatarigami that came to attack my village. It was a huge boar-god. Here is my proof!!

He holds up his blackened hand.

Ashitaka: I came to this land to ask Shishigami if he might break my curse. But... although Shishigami healed my wound, he did not remove the brand. He has condemned me to live in pain until the curse eats up my body...

The Overlord arrives.

Moro: It's the Overlord...

Moro: At last someone has come with a little understanding of the situation.

San: Wait, Overlord!

Overlord: You are Moro's daughter, aren't you? I've heard about you.

San: Your eyes are... (the Overlord is blinded by cataracts)

Ashitaka: Wolf Princess, don't worry. I want to tell him about Lord Nago's end.

Ashitaka places his hand on the Overlord's snout, and the Overlord reads from his mind about the Tatarigami and Lord Nago's death.

Overlord: Thank you, young one...

Overlord: It is very sad that a Tatarigami appeared in our clan...

Ashitaka: Overlord, is there any way to end this curse?...

Overlord: Young one, leave the forest. The next time we meet we must kill you.

Moro: Overlord, with numbers alone you will not be able to defeat the humans with their stone-fire-arrows!

Overlord: Moro, look at my clan! Little by little they are becoming smaller and more stupid. If this keeps up, humans will be able to hunt us down like common meat...

Moro: I don't like it. To make a final attack all at once is just what the humans want us to do!!

Overlord: I'm not asking the wolves to help. Even if my clan is completely destroyed. We will teach the humans a lesson!

The Overlord leads his boars away. Ashitaka closes his eyes. In the distance, San sees Shishigami walking on the water of the lake.

San: Shishigami...

Shishigami walks away.
