Nadia Vol 1,2: The Young Fugitives

124k JPG
"The Secret of Blue Water" is the adventures of Nadia, a mysterious
circus girl, and Jean, an inventive boy, with jewel thieves, Captain
Nemo of the Nautilus, a world-domination-seeking secret society, and
more. I have a set of color manga that was made from the anime series
which I will be translating here bit-by-bit. This is part 2 of volume
1, "The Young Fugitives".

version with Japanese.

There is also a version with
the original Japanese.
The Young (Little) Fugitives
(Jean is sleeping in his home by the river. In his dream he remembers
his last conversation with Nadia).
Jean: Say, Nadia...If you could really fly, where would you go?
Nadia: I...I'd like to go back to my home country...
Jean: Where is your home country?
Nadia: I don't know...
Jean: You don't remember?
Nadia: No...King says I'm from Africa... Somehow I think that's
right, too.
Nadia: But it's so far away...and so huge...
Jean: Africa? ...a long way...
(He wakes up.)
Jean: Good morning, Nadia!
(He looks around and doesn't see her in the house.)
Jean: Huh? I wonder if she just up and left...
(He sees King playing in the yard below, and is relieved. Then he
sees Nadia there also.)
Jean: Good morning! Nadia! You're a early riser, aren't you!
Nadia: Good morning.
Jean: I'll make some tea, so wait down there!
(As they have tea, Nadia looks around at the room. It is full of
models of airships and inventions.)
Nadia: This is amazing...You live in a place like this all by
yourself...
Jean: Yes! Since my father is a a sailor...
he isn't home much!
Jean: But he gives a little money to my uncle to look
after me instead. A sailor has to go through so much, you know.
Nadia: He sounds like a good father...
Jean: Uh-huh. That's why I can do my favorite things: inventions and
research!
Jean: Ahem. Occasionally, I have some failures, but...
Nadia: ......
Jean: But someday I'll build a flying machine to go around the world!
Nadia: Around the world...?
Jean: Uh-huh! Because I want to go looking for my father.
Nadia: Looking for your father?
Jean: Yes! A year ago, my father disappeared when he was sailing
in the Altantic. His ship, too.
Nadia: Ooh. Was it that sea monster? ... I'm sorry...
Jean: I don't take it too hard. There's been no proof that his
ship was sunk...
Nadia: I see! Then he must be alive somewhere!
Jean: Uh-huh! Father's a top-notch sailor. He _must_
be alive somewhere.
Jean: Well, then! I'll show you my big invention.
It's in the laboratory upstairs...
(They go upstairs).
Jean: It's a flying aeroplane.
Nadia: To be called an "aeroplane," it has to fly, right?
Jean: So far, there's not a real flying aeroplane
anywhere in the world.
Nadia: So...what's its name?
Jean: Etoile do la Seine the eighth.
Nadia: Oh, were there seven generations before this one?
Jean: The first six unfortunately couldn't even take off...
The seventh sunk in the river Seine yesterday...
Nadia: Sorry about that......
Jean: Don't worry about it! It was to rescue you!
Nadia: ......Thank you.
(The Grantan is coming down the river in submarine form.
Grandis spots Nadia on the balcony of the house with her
periscope.)
Grandis: Can it be? There she is! I've found her....
You two! This time for sure, no mistakes.
Hanson: Change! Land mode.
Sanson: Switch on! And now for standing mode.
(The Grantan becomes a four-legged land walker.)
(Meanwhile, Nadia is on the balcony, looking out to sea.)
Jean: Is anything the matter? What are you doing out here?...
Nadia: Nothing, really......
(She continues to look.)
Jean: Nadia! What's your weight?
Nadia: Huh?
Jean: I said, what's your weight?
Nadia: How rude! How dare you ask a lady such a thing?
Jean: Huh? B-but
Nadia: I'm sure I weigh less than you do!
Jean: Is that so... Good! Then there's no problem.
I'll take you flying like I promised! Let's fly to Africa together!
Nadia: Huh? But...
(Jean smiles)
Nadia: Thank you...
(Suddenly her amulet goes off -- beep beep beeep!)
Jean: What is it this time?
(Then they see the Grantan crashing through the trees towards them.)
Nadia and Jean: Aaah!
Grandis: (on a bullhorn) Listen up, you kids! You're not getting away this time!
Hand over the Blue Water quietly! If you don't you'll get hurt! This time
I'm not kidding! It's no use trying to hide!
(The children run inside the house).
Grandis: Sanson! Shake them up a bit!
Sanson: All right! Prepare to fire!
Hanson: All right! (He aims the Grantan's cannon at the house.)
Hanson: Riiight there. No problem...
(Inside, Jean works on the plane)
Nadia: Jean! What are you doing?
Jean: We'll get away in this!
(Blam! Cannon shots land near the house.)
Jean: They've really started shooting! (He opens a runway from the attic).
Grandis: What? What's that....
Grandis: Ah-ah, it's useless to try to escape from a place like that!
Surrender quickly!
Jean: Come on...Etoile do la Seine the Eighth...
Nadia: Will it be OK with two of us?
Jean: In theory! (He starts the plane down the sloping runway)
Jean: Takeoff!
Nadia: What's this? It'll never ever fly!
Jean: The aeroplane is accelerating...
Jean: If it doesn't get lift it can't fly!
(They are running down the road right towards the Grantan.)
Nadia: We're going to crash!
Sanson: Let's blast them! (He fires the cannon again.)
Jean: Flyyy!
(Suddenly the plane lifts, just missing being hit by the cannon shot.)
Grandis: Oooh! Sanson! Who told you to fire?
Grandis: F-flying!?
Sanson and Hanson: Ammaaazing!
Jean: Waaah....
(The plane passes right over the Grantan, though the trees, and over the ocean.)
Jean: We did it! We did it! We're flyyying!
Just as I calculated! Nadia! We're flying!
Nadia: Wow. We're actually flying through the air!
Jean: Naturally! My theories are perfectly correct!
Nadia: You're right! You're a genius with inventions!
Jean: At this rate we can go full speed ahead to Africa!
(The plane sputters.)
Nadia: What's wrong?
Jean: Well...I don't know...but something seems to be wrong with
its condition.
(The engine stops.)
Jean: Aaaaagh!
Nadia: What's wrong?
Jean: It broke......
Nadia: Can't you fix it somehow?...
Jean: I've been trying to, but...
Nadia: Enough! Your so-called "inventions" are just tricks...
To think I wasted my admiration on you...
(They crash-land in the water, but continue to float.)
Jean: Whew......we made it.
Nadia: Hey! How long will we be able to keep floating?
Jean: Don't worry, it's completely waterproof...
(Clouds gather overhead.)
Nadia: But...it'll get wet in the rain, won't it?
(Jean looks worried.)
