Nadia Vol 1,3: The Mysterious Sea Monsters

104k JPG
"The Secret of Blue Water" is the adventures of Nadia, a mysterious
circus girl, and Jean, an inventive boy, with jewel thieves, Captain
Nemo of the Nautilus, a world-domination-seeking secret society, and
more. I have a set of color manga that was made from the anime series
which I will be translating here bit-by-bit. This is part 3 of volume
1, "The Mysterious Sea Monsters".

version with Japanese.

There is also a version with
the original Japanese.
(It's raining hard, and the plane is filling with water even though both Jean
and Nadia are trying to bail.)
Nadia: Well...if it keeps up like this we're going to sink.
Jean: I'm already bailing with all my strength...
Jean: At a time like this I wish even the "cat" would lend a hand...
(Note: This is a joke, based on an idiomatic phrase about needing
even the help of a cat's paw.)
Nadia: ...... (laughs nervously)
Nadia: Jean! Isn't that something over there?
Jean: It's a battleshiip!
(The sailor on watch spots them).
Sailor: Man ahoy! Shipwreck survivors spotted ahead!
Captain Maybell: What's this!? Stop engines! Change course 15 degrees
to starboard! Rescue the survivors!
Sailor: Aye-aye, sir.
Jean: They're stopping for us! We're saved! HE-EEY!
(The ship comes up to them).
Jean: Awesome.
Sailor: (Yelling down to them) Heey! Are you all right? Are there just
two of you?
Jean: (Yelling back) Yes! Thaat's riight! And one small lion!
(Nadia and Jean are taken aboard. They are sitting in a cabin
with blankets around them when the captain and an officer enter.)
Captain: Welcome! This is the "Abraham." I'm Captain Maybell!
Jean: Thank you very much. Thanks to you we've been saved!
Captain: No need for thanks. Just doing our duty as millitary men!
Captain: By the way...did you build that flying machine yourself?
Jean: Yes! With my uncle.
Captain: Oho! It's excellent... Well then, please tell us how
you came to be floating here...
(Time passes as Jean explains.)
Captain: I see! I get the gist of it, that a gang of three people was
chasing you.
Jean: Yes, Captain!
Captain: They're rotten thugs to do something like that,
chasing around kids like you!
(In the Grantan, moving in submarine mode close by, the
three gang members sneeze.)
Hanson: It seems as if someone is talking about us...
(Note: this is a common Japanese superstition about sneezes.)
(Grandis spots something with the periscope.)
Grandis: What's that? Over there...
Sanson: An American battleship out on an exterminating sortie
against those sea-monsters.
Grandis: The wise man never courts danger....don't you agree?
(She looks more closely at the deck of the ship.)
Grandis: Huh? That aeroplane... the Blue Water's there!
(Back on the ship...)
Captain: Well then, in three days we'll be turning back to
France and then we can put you ashore.
Captain: Hey, Earton! Take care of these kids...
Earton: Yes, sir.
(In the Grantan...)
Sanson: Boss... Are you seriously going to pick a fight with a battleship?
Grandis : Of course! Anything for the Blue Water!
On the Abraham:
Sailor: Ship approaching off the port bow!
Captain: What? Hoho... (He spots the Grantan with his binonculars).
Below deck:
Jean: Really? We're going to the bridge?
Earton: Yeah...
Jean: Oh boy!
Nadia: ......
Jean: What's wrong?
Nadia: A warship like this is for killing people! How could
you rejoice in such a thing?...There must be something wrong
with you!
Jean: Y-you think so?.....
They arrive on deck.
Captain: Oho! Your "guests" have arrived!
(They look through binoculars and see the Grantan.)
Jean and the others: It's true!
Captain: Greet them with a few warning shots around them!
Commanding officer: Aye-aye, sir. Main batteries, prepare to fire!
(In the Grantan, Grandis looks with the periscope as the ship starts
shooting at them and the water around them spouts up with the shots.)
Grandis: Isn't that terrible, shooting without warning!
Captain: HAH HA HA HA! I've got no sympathy for bad guys!
Grandis: Return fire!
Sanson and Hanson: Got it!
(They fire one shot, but the warship is out of their range. The
battleship blasts out more shots, making the Grantan leak badly.)
Grandis: The white flag! Wave the white flag. ...No use fighting fate...
(The sub waves a large white flag with its mechanical arms).
Captain: Drag them up by crane!
(The sub is dragged aboard. The Grandis gang members inside are still up to their
chests in water.)
(That night, Nadia and Jean are served a fish dinner. Nadia is not eating.)
Jean: Thanks for the great meal!
Earton: You're already done? That was quick!
Nadia: ......
Jean: What's wrong? You haven't eaten anything at all...
Nadia: I don't want to eat!
Earton: What? Not eating such a de-lic-ious meal...
Nadia: I...how can I let a living thing be killed for me to eat?
Earton: Then it's because you're a vegetarian!
Jean: What's that?
Earton: Don't you know? They're folks who don't eat
things like meat and fish!
Jean: Is that it? Nadia......
Nadia: ......
Suddenly an alarm goes off on the ship.
Sailor: Mainmast watch here. Possible sea monster ahoy off the
starboard bow! Its heading is one-zero-four.
Captain: Full ship battle preparations!
Commanding Officer:Aye-aye sir. All personnel to battle
stations! Battle stations!
Captain: At last we've found it! Open all gun ports and target
the large creature to starboard!
Nadia rushes up to him.
Nadia: No! Don't shoot! Even though it's a sea monster it's
still a living creature! How can you kill such a poor thing?
Captain: It's my duty! It's because of that thing that all
those sailors were killed. Don't interfere!
Sailor: Target distance 12,000! Speed 30 knots.
Captain: That's crazy! I can't believe it's faster than our ship...
Suddenly it vanishes from sight.
Captain: Oh no! It's getting away from us?
Jean: Strange. It's as if something is driving it away.
Nadia: It's saved! I give thanks...
Later, Nadia and Jean are talking near their plane.
Nadia: I can't forgive the killing of living creatures... (King rubs
against her) Yes, King... Humph! All you can think about is
breakfast...
Jean: You understand what King is saying?
Nadia: Yes! I can do that a bit with other animals too...
But... I don't understand the heart of that sea monster.
Jean: It's an evil thing! There's no way to understand it.
Nadia: The sea monster has lived in the oceans from long ago! And
after that, humans chased and cornered it!
Earton: Yo! What's the quarrel about?
Suddenly there are big splashes out in the water.
Sailor: Theeere it is! O-over there, too!
Nadia: There were two of the poor little sea monsters! They're
coming here!
Sailor: Sea monster approaching from aft starboard! Speed 32 knots.
Sailor: Oh no, it's going to hit us!
The ship is hit hard by the monster.
Captain: Waaah!
As the ship rocks, the Grantan is thrown free of its chains.
Grandis: Lucky!
Sailor: Flooding in section two!
Captain: This is crazy... It pierced our steel armor plating! Is it
really something alive?
Sailor: Sea monster turning to the port side!
Captain: (Thinks) Blasted monster! (Aloud) Fire a volley to port!
Kill it without fail!
They fire, and one of the shots seems to hit the monster without effect.
Jean: It bounced off!? It sounded like iron...
Earton: What about the other "little" sea monster?
Nadia: Right below us! It looks like it's chasing the other monster.
The ship tilts.
Nadia: I wonder if we're sinking...
Jean: Don't worry. This is a newly-made American navy battleship.
Sailor: Torpedo approaching the forward bow!
Captain: What?
The ship is hit, and as the deck tilts Nadia and Jean are thrown
overboard. As the sun rises, both are in the water near their plane,
which also fell off the ship.
Jean: Are you all right?
Nadia: Yes! But the battleship must have lost its rudder.
Jean: It can't turn back.
Nadia: You're right.
The ship disappears over the horizon, leaving them stranded in the sea.
