Nadia Vol 1,4:
The Submarine Nautilus

Nadia episode 5 images

104k JPG

"The Secret of Blue Water" is the adventures of Nadia, a mysterious circus girl, and Jean, an inventive boy, with jewel thieves, Captain Nemo of the Nautilus, a world-domination-seeking secret society, and more. I have a set of color manga that was made from the anime series which I will be translating here bit-by-bit. This is part 4 of volume 1, "The Submarine Nautilus".

Part 4
The Submarine Nautilus

Chapter introduction (narrated by Jean).

Nadia and I were attacked by the sea monster and got thrown into the sea....

On the battleship they weren't aware we had fallen overboard. Unfortunately they left us behind on the ocean.

We were saved from this by a giant ship that appeared from under the sea.

Inside the ship a masked young woman who called herself "Electra" welcomed us very kindly.

According to her story, this ship was chasing pirates.

Then she told us the ship captain was named Nemo. But I knew that "Nemo" in Latin means "nobody."

I can't tell what kind of people are in the ship's crew. The only fact I'm sure about is that they saved us...

The story resumes here. Jean and Nadia are locked in a cabin of the sub.

Nadia: I had the Blue Water when I was sold to the circus... other than that I had nothing.

Jean: Hmmmm. How old were you when that happened?

Nadia: I don't know! I was very little. The Blue Water... it's become my only clue that will help me find my family.

Jean tries to squeeze through an air duct, but it's too tight. Meanwhile, the Nautilus's crew is conversing in the control room.

Nemo: You caught it?

Crewman: Aye-aye sir! I hear the sound of their propellers at 2:00 from our bow.

Nemo: What about their speed?

Crewman: They're cruising towards this ship at about 8 knots.

Electra: Could they have spotted us?

Nemo: Of course not... Any sonar?

Crewman: There are no pulses.

Electra: Are you going to attack them?

Nemo: No! We'll let them pass. Then we'll tail the enemy sub at a distance of 5000... This time we'll find Gargoyle's base.

Electra: Aye-aye, sir!

Nemo: It certainly must be close by!

Nemo: Enter stealth mode before they detect us on their sonar.

Crewman: Engines shut down.

Nadia and Jean are surprised by the sudden silence of the engines.

Crewman: All ship counter-missiles and and anti-torpedo shielding deployed. Waterproof barriers closed.

Nemo: Shut off the lights!

Nemo: What are they doing now?

Crewman: Coming into range of 7000! 5000.... 3000...

Nemo: Don't make a sound!

Suddenly there is a clanging noise! Jean is beating on the bars of the cabin ventilation window with a wrench.

Jean: Gee! I can't open it.

Nemo: What the...!?

Electra: (Thinking) I wonder if those children are...

Electra: Have we been discovered?...

Nemo: I don't know.

Crewman: Direct visual contact with the target confirmed! Soon it will pass directly above us.

Nadia: What could that sound be, I wonder?

Jean: Something is passing above us...

Round objects drop down from the enemy vessel towards the Nautilus.

Crewman: Depth charges! Coming from right above us.

Nemo: Immediate vertical ascent with engines at full throttle!

The Nautilus rises, avoiding the depth charges which explode right below their level.

Nadia: Eeyaaah!

Nemo: What's going on with them?

Crewman: It's breaking off and leaving. Distance of 800 at 12 knots.

Nemo: Don't let them escape! Turn the helm 160 degrees!

The enemy vessel fires torpedos at the Nautilus.

Crewman: I hear the firing of four torpedos at a distance of 1200!

Nemo: Full speed evasion!

Crewman: There's no time!

Nemo: Counter-torpedos!

The counter-missiles shoot down all but one of the torpedos. It explodes, but the shielding of the Nautilus holds. Jean falls to the floor from the ventilation shaft.

Jean: Waah!

Nemo: Any damage?

Crewman 1: No problems with the engine!

Crewman 2: No locations hit!

Crewman 3: No flooding!

Crewman 4: No harm to the ballast!

Crewman 4: What about the enemy sub?

Nemo: It's no use. Their torpedos must have damage-resistant materials. We can't capture them!

Later, after the other vessel has left...

Nemo: ...We failed. We'll try again another time...

The Nautilus surfaces. Electra goes to get Nadia and Jean.

Electra: Well -- come along, you two.

Jean: Huh, where to?

Electra: Outside... We'll be saying farewell.

They go out onto the upper deck.

Jean: Wow, the sky!

Nadia: The sun, at last.

They take a big breath of air.

Jean: Ah! My aeroplane!

The plane is lowered to the deck from a crane.

Jean: Wooow! It's become a sea-plane!

Electra: It's a present from the Nautilus and myself.

Jean: The Nautilus?

Electra: Yes! The all-purpose submarine Nautilus.

Nadia sees Nemo standing on deck with his back to her. She has a strange feeling about him, but she says nothing.

Nadia and Jean take off from the water in the plane.

Nadia: Many thanks, Electra!

Electra: Take care!

As they fly away, Electra says to herself:

Electra: ...Farewell, Princess.
