Nadia Vol 2,1:
Marie's Island

Nadia Marie's island images

"The Secret of Blue Water" is the adventures of Nadia, a mysterious circus girl, and Jean, an inventive boy, with jewel thieves, Captain Nemo of the Nautilus, a world-domination-seeking secret society, and more. I have a set of color manga that was made from the anime series which I will be translating here bit-by-bit. This is part 1 of volume 2, "Marie's Island".

Part 1
Marie's Island

Jean: Isn't flying the greatest!? Before we land, why don't we go for a spin around the island?

Nadia: It would be better to get landed quickly before we crash again.

Jean: Sheesh! Girls just don't appreciate the romance of flying, do they?

On the island, Grandis and Sanson are having a picnic lunch while Hanson tries to fix the Grantan.

Hanson: Hey, bo---oss! Hold on. Save some for me.

Grandis: Aah, how long has it been since we've had a good solid meal?

Sanson: You're so right...

Grandis: (signs) What a mess this has turned into...

Sanson: You're so right.

Grandis: What are you saying? It's because you were such craven cowards!

Sanson: You're so right. (He's not really listening).

Grandis: Aah, why don't I have any luck with men? (Praying) Oh, Lord... could it be that I have done something wrong?

Sanson: ...You sure have...

Hanson: Uh-huh.

Grandis throws a wine bottle at Sanson, hitting him in the face.

Grandis: That's one word too many out of you!

Sanson: Sorree. (talking with thick lips)

Grandis: (Sighs).

All lay back on the grass. Then they hear a sound in the air...

Grandis: Huh? What's that?

All look with binoculars.

Grandis: That plane...

The Grandis Gang: It's the Blue Water!

In the air, Nadia and Jean are coming in for a landing.

Nadia: There's something wrong -- I've got a premonition...

Jean: Well, we're landing! This is a chance for me to show off my skill.

Nadia: A chance to show off your skill, huh... Isn't this the first time you've ever landed?

Jean: Well, yes. So that's why it's a chance to show off my skill!

Nadia: Oh no, please not another crash landing....

Suddenly there is gunfire from the island. A shot cuts through one of the wings!

Jean: Aagh! Waaah!

Sanson: It's on fire.

Grandis: They were shot down.

Hanson: Are we going to go and help Nadia?

Grandis: You fool! This is our chance to get our hands on the Blue Water!

Hanson: (looking unhappy) I'll have the repairs done in a little bit, but...

Grandis: Whaat? Isn't the fate of the children more important?

Sanson and Hanson: Then it isn't just for the Blue Water?

Grandis glares at them for a second, then throws her binoculars in Hanson's face.

Grandis: That's one word too many out of you!

Grandis: Let's go. And be quick about it, please!

Nadia: (on the ground, recovering consciousness) ...King...King? You aren't here...why? You fell from the plane, didn't you... the plane...

Then she wakes up.

Nadia: Jean! King! Please answer...

She sees smoke from the burning plane.

Nadia: It's burning? Jeaaan!

Nadia: (looking at the broken plane) ... broken to pieces ...

Nadia: (seeing Jean's hat on the ground) Jean...

Suddenly there is a groan from up in a tree.

Jean: Uuhhh

Nadia: Jean!

She climbs up the tree and looks at him.

Nadia: Jean...Jean!

Jean: Nadia... what happened to my airplane?

Nadia: (looking towards the smoke) Over there...

Jean: Again... it crashed, didn't it. Hey! How's King...?

Nadia: I can't find him anywhere.

Jean: Is that right? I'll go look for him... um, but first...

Nadia: Whaat?

Jean: I could use your help getting down from here...

Meanwhile, Grandis arrives at the wreckage site.

Grandis: ... This is terrible!

Hanson: The fuselage is smashed...

Sanson: And Nadia?

Grandis: She couldn't have survived...

Suddenly a shot is fired near them and they are surrounded by armed men wearing macabre masks and hoods.

Soldier: Don't move!

Jean and Nadia are walking on a road not far away.

Jean: To fire at us without warning like that...what could be the reason? I thought they said this was a peaceful island...

They see a family lying in the road; a mother, father, little girl, and a dog.

Jean: Someone has fallen down.

He goes to the man and tries to shake him awake.

Jean: S-sir, hello...

Jean: He's c-cold...

Jean: Blood...! Nadia!

Nadia has checked the woman and found that she is dead also. Nadia hangs her head in silence.

Jean: This must have been their pet dog...

Suddenly there is a moan from the little girl.

Mari: U-uhhh.

Nadia: Hey! Jean! This little girl is alive.

Jean hears the footsteps of the enemy soldiers.

Jean: This is bad. Nadia! We have to hide.

They hide in the bushes and watch the soldiers march Grandis and her henchmen along.

Nadia: Those three... they must have been captured...

Jean: Aah, those must also be the ones who killed those people!

Nadia: What kind of people could they be, I wonder?

Jean: They're a gang of murderers!

Jean: (getting out of hiding after they pass) Anyway, it's too dangerous to stay here... Let's go!

There is a rustling in the bushes.

Jean: Are we caught?

Nadia: King! You're safe, aren't you... I was so worried.

Jean: Whew.

Jean: (looking at Marie) Do you think this little girl knows about what happened to her parents...?

At sunset, all of them are hiding in a gulley.

Nadia: It looks like she's waking up...

Marie: ... Mama...?

Nadia: Uh-uh. My name is Nadia, and this boy is Jean. And you are?

Marie: Marie!

King pokes his nose into Marie's face.

Marie: Ooh!

Nadia: It's all right... This is King! He's a baby lion.

Marie: Ohh. And where's Mama?... And Papa?

Nadia: Papa and Mama aren't here...

Marie: Then I'm going to them!

Nadia: N-not right now.

Marie: Why? Tonight Papa said we were going to hide in the old village...

Jean: A village?

Marie: That's right! I learned all about where it was!

Jean: So... you're a clever girl, aren't you, Marie?

Marie: Uh-huh! That's what Mama always says!

(Overcome, Nadia clasps Marie to herself).

Meanwhile, one of the masked soldiers is reporting to their commanding officer, masked but wearing a red hood instead of black.

Officer: What? You say there is an aeroplane?

Soldier: It was shot down, and a search for the crew is in progress now!

Officer: Is that right... Make an all-out search for the intruders!

Soldier: Yes, sir! By the way, what shall we do with the group of three strangers found at the site?

Officer: Bring them to me. I will interrogate them. Someone else besides can make a functional aeroplane... perhaps it could be our enemies from the Nautilus?

Nadia, Jean, and Marie make it to the old village and are in one of the houses.

Marie: Mama's cooking is really good! Next time if you come to our house she'll make you a big dinner! ...Mama and Papa are late getting here...

Jean: Say! What does your Papa do for a living?

Marie: He's an engineer at the power plant! That's where they burn the coal and make all the electricity.

Jean: It's a steam-driven power plant. Why would it be on an island like this...?

Marie: I had gone night-night... suddenly Mama woke me up..
Papa and Mama looked frightened...
We ran deeper and deeper into the woods...
Then a bunch of scary men was chasing us from behind...
There was a huge bang-bang-bang sound! And then... and then...
Papa and Mama just fell asleep...
After that I don't remember anything.
Mama's hand got colder and colder and...

Nadia: That's enough! I'm so sorry...

Suddenly there is a sound of footsteps outside, and then a huge explosion! Then gunshots are fired at the house. They all duck down.

Jean: Waugh! We've been spotted!

Marie: W- wu- waah!

Jean covers her mouth.

Jean: Sorry, Marie!

Marie: Mmph!

Nadia: I wonder how they knew. Over there! It was the light of our candle....

Soldier: Come out with your hands up! You have until a count of 5. One!

Jean: Hmm! (He sees sticks, cloth, and rope in the corner of the room).

Soldier: Two! Three!

Jean: I'm coming out. Don't shoot!

Soldier: Ye-es, that's a good boy. (To his men) As soon as he comes out, all fire at once.

The door is pushed open and the soldiers fire. Then they see a piece of cloth was used to give a fake shadow against the window of the door.

Soldier: Huh? (Then he sees the children getting out the back way). Blast, there're around there! Don't let them get away. After them!

Jean, Nadia, and Marie run. They come to a bridge over a canal.

Jean: (to the others) Hide. (to himself) OK! Heave-ho!

He picks up a large rock and throws it into the canal.

Soldier: That was them - over here! One of them jumped into the river. After him! And you, look around over there.

Later the soldiers are still looking. Nadia and the others have hidden under the bridge.

Soldier 1: Found them?

Soldier 2: No!

Soldier: How many people have gotten away?

Soldier 2: It seems to have been three children and a cat!

Solider: They're probably not local islanders.

Soldier: But it's impossible that children could have handled a plane...
(Jean silently glowers at this).

Soldier 2: Yes, sir!

Soldier: Anyway, we have to report! We'll return to base.

Nadia: What should we do now?

Jean: Let's see. We'll get caught if we light a cooking fire...

Marie: It's night, huh. Let's go to the cave!

Jean: The cave?

Marie: It's around the headland. It's a great big hole. Everyone goes there and Papa and his friends used to meet there.

Jean: Surely the rest of the people who escaped are there...Let's go there!

Nadia: Yes.

Back at the officer's headquarters.

Officer: You discovered the intruders?

Soldier: Yes, sir! We discovered three children and one cat, who it seems were riding the airplane! We are still in the process of searching for them now.

Officer: You failed to capture them?

Soldier: No excuse, sir.

Officer: Well, it's all right....Here are your new orders. By all means capture the girl alive. I don't care if you kill the others!

(The officer turns to Grandis, Hanson, and Sanson, who are bound as prisoners.)

Officer: ...So, there seems to be one child too many... but you haven't been lying to me.

Grandis: What did I tell you?! We just came after the Blue Water!

Officer: Where did you find out about the Blue Water?

Grandis: We saw it in an advertisement...

Officer: Heh heh... So it was one of the flyers put out by our intelligence department... It seems it has more or less served its purpose...

Grandis: Enough, already! Let us go!

Officer: Regretfully, no! Since you took such trouble to come here.... You will work here for us until you die.

Meanwhile Nadia, Jean, and Marie have arrived at the cave.

Jean: There's food and water here... they must have been planning to escape here.

Nadia: But... there's no one here.... Here's a blanket.

Jean: Put it around Marie. Hey! (He sees Marie has already fallen asleep).

Later, all of them have made beds on the cave floor with blankets.

Nadia: Jean... are you awake?

Jean: Yeah. I can't sleep.

Nadia: What is it?

Jean: I'm going out for a little while...

Nadia: Where are you going?

Jean: There's something I've got to do before Marie wakes up! I'll be back soon....

Nadia: Wait, I'm going too! It's not something you can do alone...

Jean: ...All right... let's go!

Jean and Nadia dig graves for Marie's parents and their dog.

The next morning, Jean, Nadia, and Marie pray at the gravesite.

Jean: Marie...

He looks over and sees Nadia is trying to talk to her.

Nadia: Marie, listen carefully...

Nadia: Your papa and mama... have passed away...

Marie: Passed away?

Nadia: They've gone far away in the sky, to Heaven.

Marie: And Mac? [the dog]

Nadia: Mac went there too...

Marie: Then I'm going, too!

Nadia: No, you can't! You'll stay with us.

Marie: No! I'm going where papa and mama are!

Nadia: Marie... be a good girl.

Marie: (yelling) No, no, I'm going, too!

Jean: It's no good!... You must not go.... You can never see them again. Marie... please try to understand...

Marie: Jean... I can never see them again? No!... Never see them again...No!...

Marie holds on to Nadia and begins to cry.
