Nadia Vol 2,3: The Tower of Babel
"The Secret of Blue Water" is the adventures of Nadia, a mysterious
circus girl, and Jean, an inventive boy, with jewel thieves, Captain
Nemo of the Nautilus, a world-domination-seeking secret society, and
more. I have a set of color manga that was made from the anime series
which I will be translating here bit-by-bit. This is part 3 of volume
2, "The Tower of Babel".
You may prefer the
version with Japanese.
Part 3
The Tower of Babel
Nadia is tied to a chair in a large room in Gargoyle's palatial headquarters.
Gargoyle: It's been a long time, hasn't it? I never thought I would have the
honor of seeing you again.
Nadia: I don't know you at all!
Gargoyle: That's not unreasonable...because you were only a baby at the
time. You really don't want to know where I met you?
Nadia: I don't know any murderers!
Gargoyle: Stubborn, exactly like your father... --- By the way, where's
the Blue Water?
Nadia: I threw it in the ocean.
Gargoyle: Oho...
He snaps his fingers and a curtain pulls back to reveal Marie and King, both
bound and gagged, with soldiers standing over them.
Nadia: Marie! King!
Gargoyle: Does it matter to you what happens to that girl?
Nadia: I'm telling you, I threw it away! What's gone is gone!
Gargoyle aims a gun at Marie.
Gargoyle: Now... where is the Blue Water?
Nadia: At the bottom of the sea.
Gargoyle fires, but it is one of his own men that is shot. Nadia is shocked.
Gargoyle: Do you understand? I killed that man because of your stubborness...
Nadia: You're cruel...
Nadia: Stop it! You're inhuman. God will not forgive such things.
Nadia: I'll tell you nothing! No matter how many times you ask!
Gargoyle: You'll tell me nothing... that means you do know
something, doesn't it?
He walks over to Marie and aims at her head.
Gargoyle: The one who will snatch away the lives of these innocent young
ones... is you. Is it worth that much to you? You'll surely regret
this... (He gets ready to shoot Marie).
Nadia: ...Wait!
Gargoyle: Where is the Blue Water?
Nadia: The boy who was with me has it...
Gargoyle: Thank you.
Nadia: (under her breath) I'm sorry... Jean...
Meanwhile, Jean is hiding near the docks.
Jean: Is this a train station?...
Looking around, he sees a cargo train that goes up the hill to Gargoyle's
palace.
Jean: That's it! I'll get into the palace on that boxcar.
He climbs into one of the train's cars, which contains bricks.
Jean: Sheesh. It's not moving at all...
Grandis, Hanson, and Sanson have been thrown into a prison cell
by the guards.
Grandis: Well now, I've had a good nap and I'm hungry. Let's
quietly slip out of this "hotel", eh?
Hanson and Sanson: The moment we've been waiting for!
Sanson uses his strength to bend the bars, while Hanson picks the lock.
Both finish at the same moment.
Hanson and Sanson: Opened it!
Outside, they hide and watch the patrolling guards.
Sanson: Awkward -- with such strict vigilance escape will be tricky.
The trio runs out to the train area and hides in one of the cars.
Grandis: ...Anyway, we can hide in here. In the morning it will probably
go outside, taking us with it...
In the palace, Gargolye's officer speaks to Nadia at a table with breakfast food.
Officer: Princess Nadia, Master Gargoyle is calling.
Nadia: I don't want to go!
Officer: Your companions, the girl and the lion, are there with him.
Nadia: Marie and King!?
She goes outside to a flower garden surrounding a huge statue. Marie and
King are sitting in front of Gargoyle. Nadia runs to them.
Marie: Hey, King.
Nadia: Marie! King!
Marie: Nadia!
King: Myau!
Nadia runs forward and embraces them.
Nadia: Marie! King!
Marie: Nadia.
Gargoyle: What do you think of this? It's my garden in the sky.
It's the pinnacle of Neo-Atlantean science.
Nadia: Science?
Gargoyle: That's right. All of the flowers, trees, and grass here are
things that we created. With our power we can already manufacture
nature.... In short, we are Creators of Everything. We can become
"gods."
Nadia: ...how arrogant.
Gargoyle: Come now, Nadia. Let me guide you around my base...
Jean had been sleeping in the train. He wakes up.
Jean: It moved!
Gargoyle is showing Nadia around in a cable car.
Gargoyle: That is a modern electric plant... its enormous electrical energy
gives to us the power of gods.
Nadia stares ahead and says nothing.
Gargolye: Look! That beautiful tower... is the "Tower of Babel."
Electricity conducted by it will turn into powerful electrically
charged particles.
He takes her into the building at the base of the tower.
Gargoyle: This is the heart of the tower. Within this spiral the
charged particles will be accelerated... In that central part they will be
compressed and concentrated. And then a beam will be fired high into
the air. The ray of light from Babel that goes into the heavens will
rebound as the Messenger Star... Once more, we have a beam that can
burn everything on earth.
Nadia looks shocked.
Gargoyle: In that flame, every living thing will be gone!
Gargoyle: Tonight we will show you a wonderful spectacle.
It will be a replay of Sodom and Gomorrah!
Jean's car has reached the top.
Jean: It's stopped.
Unknown to him, Grandis and her henchmen are on the same train. They
peek out.
Grandis: Where in the world are we now...
Men in large robotic suits are unloading the cargo from the next train.
Scientist: Got it? Now lower it carefully.
It's a large piece of metal marked with the eye-symbol of Gargoyle.
Worker: This is very important artificial orichalcum...
Gargoyle is throwing a big reception in the main room of his palace. Masked
men in suits and uniforms applaud him.
Gargoyle: Comrades! Gentlemen! At last the day we shall commemorate has
come! This is our revival of the power of Atlantis! Gentlemen, now
you will see the divine light! This light will be our power, and
once again the entire world will be forced to kneel to Atlantis!
Nadia is sitting in a chair on the side, under armed guard. She glares
silently.
Gargoyle: Gentlemen, now the experiment begins!
In the dark, the Grandis gang prepares to leave the train.
Hanson: It's gotten quiet, hasn't it...
Grandis: OK!
Jean also prepares to leave his car.
Jean: I'm going.
They jump down right next to each other.
Jean: Yaaah!
Hanson and Sanson grab him and stifle his yells.
Grandis: Ssh!
At the ceremony, Gargoyle's officer speaks to him.
Officer: Everyone is in position.
Scientist 1: Prepare to fire! Shut down power.
Scientist 2: Yes, sir!
Spotlights and sirens turn on all over the island.
Scientist 2: Starting up the power! Diverting all power to the Tower of
Babel circuits. All circuits linked!
A blue beam shoots up into the air. Grandis and the others are close by
and see the blue glow from the metal block.
Grandis and company: Wh-what!?
Hanson: What's this? It's just like the Blue Water...
Scientist: Eletrical energy influx. Particle acceleration started.
Energy crackles around the block, shocking those nearby. In orbit, the
"Servant Star" satellite starts to transmit a signal.
Gargoyle: We have received confirmation from "Michael," our Servant Star!
Experimental target, Balkeni Island. Begin the directional movement of
the gears.
Out at sea, the Nautilus spots the buildup of power.
Crewman: Captain! There's a high energy reading at 2:00. It's
unbelievably strong.
Nemo: Really! Could it be the Tower of Babel!?
Back at Gargoyles lair, they blindfold Nadia against the flash.
Gargoyle: There will be a blast of light in 20 seconds. Prepare
eye protection!
The beam blasts out and strikes the experimental target island,
blowing it up. Nemo watches from his sub.
Nemo: What a terrible thing... Gargoyle has completed the Tower
of Babel!
Gargoyle: Splendid. This is a divine light that will make the world
bow down before us once more.
Out at sea, Nemo watches.
Nemo: This is a diabolical light that will destroy the world.
