Nadia Vol 3,2: The Grantan's Action
"The Secret of Blue Water" is the adventures of Nadia, a mysterious
circus girl, and Jean, an inventive boy, with jewel thieves, Captain
Nemo of the Nautilus, a world-domination-seeking secret society, and
more. I have a set of color manga that was made from the anime series
which I will be translating here bit-by-bit. This is part 2 of volume
3, "The Grantan's Action".

version with Japanese.
Chapter 2: The Grantan's Action
Early the next day, Nemo and Electra are standing on the upper deck.
Nemo: You knew about Nadia?
Electra: Yes... but I would never interfere between you.
Nemo: I see... You may leave now.
Electra: Aye-aye, sir.
Nadia suddenly wakes up.
Nadia: ...I feel frightened. Why?...
Marie, sleeping beside her, wakes up.
Nadia: I'm sorry! I woke you up, didn't I?
Marie: Uh-huh...
Jean: (Looking down from the top bunk). You're too noisy -- be quiet.
Nadia: Unsympathetic guy...
Marie: That's why men are no good.
Later, Electra is working at a console of the Nautilus. A call comes in
on her intercom.
Chief Engineer: Chief Engineer to bridge. The repairs to the main
engine are completed. We will begin scheduled test runs.
Electra: Understood. You've done very well...
She turns to the captain.
Electra: In five minutes we will begin a test run.
Nemo: ...Lieutenant. About that group...
Electra: Yes, sir?
Electra informs the children of the captain's decision. Jean and the
Grandis gang are to leave in the Grantan. Nadia, Marie, and King will
remain on the Nautilus. Jean is shocked.
Jean: What? You'd do a thing like that!?
Electra: I can't help it. It's the Captain's orders.
Jean: (hanging his head sadly) The Captain's...
Electra: But you can still come visit Nadia whenever you want to.
Nothing will be different from how it is now.
Nadia becomes very angry.
Nadia: It will be different! It's a huge difference! Why? Why
is he doing this!?
Electra: ... Well. Perhaps... You are already adults. To have a man
and woman living together in one room, the Captain's probably wrong, but
might he be worried about what could be stirred up that shouldn't be?
Jean and Nadia blush and look at each other sideways. Jean seems to be
looking down at her body.
Nadia: Yaah! Jean! You're disgusting!
Jean: You're mi-mistaken! I'd never think of such a thing...
Nadia: Get out!!
Jean: Nadia...
Nadia: I hate you... I hate you all. I haate you so much!
Later, Nadia walks down the hall along with Marie.
Marie: Hey, Nadia... why did you have a husband-and-wife quarrel with Jean?
Nadia: I don't know.
Marie: I just don't understand adults.
Nadia: ...I'm not an adult yet!
Marie looks at her questioningly.
Jean and Grandis are sitting together on a bunk, both moping at
having to go.
Grandis: It's hard, isn't it... this unrequited love.
Jean looks at her, puzzled.
Grandis: Even though we're on the same ship, I can't meet him. And
when he's right before my eyes I can't say anything...
Jean: It's like that for you?
Grandis: ...But when the repairs to Katherine (the Grantan) are completed,
I must leave...
Sanson pops in, looking happy.
Sanson: Boss! The repairs are all done! We can leave any time!
Grandis sighs.
Later, Nadia and Marie are watching the Nautilus pull away from the island.
Marie: Goodbye Mama... and Papa.
Nadia: You shouldn't say "goodbye." Mama and Papa are constantly watching
over you from heaven.
Marie: Hmmm... Well, is that where your Mama and Papa are?
Nadia: Yes... Probably they are there in heaven too.
Marie: Well then, they're all together.
Below, on the bridge:
Crewman: Captain Nemo! There's a signal detected in the air at 5 o'clock
astern!
Nemo: Range?
Crewman: Currently 12 kilometers from us, closing on us at a rate of
27 knots. Perhaps it's Gargoyle's flying warship.
Electra: Why has he come back?
Nemo: Maybe it's a trap.
Nadia, Marie, and King are still on the surface.
Nadia: King... Do you think Africa might be beyond the horizon that way?
She sees a large blimp in the air above them.
Nadia: I wonder what that is?
Inside on the bridge, Nemo prepares for an attack.
Crewman: They're heading northeast. Shall we pursue?
Nemo: Helmsman! Turn us around. Aim to approach them
submerged at a depth of 30.
Helmsman: Aye-aye, sir! Preparing to submerge! The airship is
heading into Rumell Channel.
A crewman opens the hatch to warn Nadia and the others.
Crewman: Hey, what are you doing up here? You want to get drowned?!
Nadia: Oh! Ok, coming!
On the bridge.
Engineer: Engines normal. Connecting the propeller.
Electra: Tanks normal. No problems with the air pressure. Nothing
abnormal.
Helmsman: Submerge angle 25 degrees.
Nemo: Prepare surveillance sensors.
Crewman: Aye-aye sir!
A bouyed visual sensor is sent up to the surface.
Crewman: Begin reception. (The optical sensor gives color
images they display on the screen.)
Helmsman: They're in the sky above Rummel Channel, aren't they?
The reefs there are troublesome. Even in this ship, getting through is
a serious problem.
Crewman: The speed of the airship is increasing! At this rate they'll pull
ahead of us.
Helmsman: What shall we do, Captain?
Nemo: ...If we turn we'll let them escape. Use that underwater supply
tunnel.
Helmsman: Aye-aye sir! There's the reef!
Nemo: Turn to 11 o'clock!
Helmsman: 11 o'clock it is!
Crewman: Underground water tunnel confirmed! Distance 80!
Helmsman: Entering the tunnel.
They steer into the narrow rocky tunnel.
Helmsman: Plus two degrees, sir!
The signal crewman detects something as they are about to exit the tunnel.
Crewman: Reflection from the exit confirmed. Many obstacles ahead, detected
as metallic!
Nemo: Brake! Full speed astern!
Passengers are thrown around by the sudden stop.
The Grandis Gang and Jean: Waah!
Marie: N-Nadia! (clinging to her)
Crewman: What was it?
Nemo: Mechanical underwater mines.
Electra: Just as you thought, it was a trap.
Nemo: Helmsman, keep backing up and we'll escape from here.
Helmsman: Aye-aye sir! Backing up.
Nadia: (in the cabin holding Marie) What could be going on, I wonder?
Above them, the blimp is dropping more mines, closing off other end
of the tunnel. Gargolyle and his new commanding officer, a woman this
time, are watching this operation.
Officer: Lord Gargoyle, we have completed the airdrop.
Gargoyle: Yesss! It is a present from me... Ladies and gentlemen of
the Nautilus, do me the honor of receiving it, as your death...
Back on the bridge of the Nautilus.
Crewman: There are a lot of metallic readings from astern, too.
Nemo: Stop the ship, both directions. Use the emergency brakes!
Engineer: Emergency brakes! Operate at full power.
The ship comes to a sudden halt, throwing the passengers around again.
Sanson: Again!
Nemo: ... We've been done in...
Crewman: Both the exits have been blocked with mines.
Electra: We can't operate diving suits at this depth.
Engineer: We can't use the bathosphere here either...
Helmsman: Shall I try blowing them away with a water jet?
Nemo: Perhaps the increased pressure would explode them. Too risky.
Crewman: The tidal currents are shifting.
Electra: What are you saying!?
Nemo: Blast that Gargoyle...!
Meanwhile, up in the blimp...
Officer: You seem to be enjoying this, Lord Gargoyle.
Gargolye: Yesss... I love playing this kind of game. Soon
the Nautilus will receive my message...
On the bridge, the Nautilus gets a signal.
Electra: It's Morse code.
Nemo: Read it!
Electra: (reading Gargoyle's signal) : My dear ladies and gentlemen
of the Nautilus, how do you like my little present?...
Gargoyle: (dictating the message) These are the latest floating mines we
have developed. I'm sorry, but we're using you for their laboratory test.
You have just 3 hours and 10 minutes before the tides rush in. It's up to
you to remove them before then. Dear Nemo... I'm giving you this warning as
a old friend. Those mines have a combination detonation by touch, magnetism,
water pressure, and so on. I wish you the best of luck! Ha ha ha ha ha....
Nemo: Hah... we're guinea pigs?!
Electra: He's playing games with our lives...
Nemo reports the problem to the whole ship over the intercom.
Nemo: Our ship situation is as I have told you. As yet we have found
no effective way of escape. Anyone who has an idea please report to
the bridge immediately.... that's all!
In the cabin, Jean and the Grandis gang hear this announcement.
Jean: This is awful!
Sanson: We know that already. The question is, what do we do?
Hanson: Mines, huh... What kind of explosive device could they have?
Jean, Sanson, and Hanson: Hmmmm...
Grandis: That's it! Katherine!
Grandis meets with Nemo on the bridge, back in her millitary-style costume.
Nemo: So then you'll make your tank airtight and go outside and get the mines..?
Grandis: Yes, sir.
Nemo: But by yourself...
Grandis: That's all right.
When Grandis explains her plan to the gang, they object.
Hanson: What? The Grantan's my invention! Of course I'll come with you.
Sanson: ... Hey, it can't be helped...
Grandis: You might die.
Hanson: I'm more of an expert in operating the "Magic Hands" than you!
Sanson: And driving's my job!
Grandis: Shut up already! You two don't have to be so pushy!...
She hugs them. Then she turns towards Nemo.
Grandis: Let us do this for you, Captain Nemo.
Nemo nods grimly.
Jean: We've done it! (to Sanson and Hanson) I'll help, too. Hey,
take me along with you.
Sanson: Idiot! You're staying behind to protect Nadia!
The Grandis gang checks over the Grantan.
Grandis: We've got to do this right. We can't freeload here forever,
you know!
Sanson: Really, you just want to show off to Nemo!
Grandis: Sanson! That's one word too many out of...
Sanson suddenly punches her, knocking her out. He puts her on the bed
in her cabin.
Sanson: If I hadn't done something like that, this dear young woman would
never have listened to us...
Hanson: This time it's for real, isn't it?
Sanson: It's enough that the two of us cross this dangerous bridge.
Ah, if we pull this off we'll have saved the ship and the boss along
with it.
They set off in the Grantan, leaving Grandis in the cabin. The
Nautilus calls them on the ship radio.
Nemo: This is the Nautilus. Do you read me?
Sanson: Yes, I read you loud and clear on the underwater telephone.
Nemo: Hmm!? What's happened to Grandis?
Sanson: Well... to tell the truth we left her in the ship.
Nemo: ... I see. Understood.
They approach the floating mines.
Sanson: Hanson!
Hanson: Yep!
Hanson uses the mechanical arms to grab the cable connecting the mine
with its floater and move it away.
Sanson: Open up the compressed air tank a little bit...
Jean: I opened it. Is that good enough?
Sanson: Yeah, thanks. (Suddenly realizing who he's talking to) Huh!?
Sanson and Hanson: Jean! Y-you...
Jean: Heh, heh, heh.
They radio back to the Nautilus and Nadia hears on the intercom.
Sanson: Grantan calling Nautilus. We ended up with one more crew member.
Nadia: Jean!
Hanson and Sanson are slowly dealing with the mines.
Hanson: Theere. One sector finished.
Sanson: In our hands, this is a cinch!
Hanson: Go to the next one. Next!
Sanson: All riight.
The tank walls groan under the water pressure, and water begins to leak in.
Hanson: The water pressure is greater than we expected...
Sanson is watching the mechanical arms using an exterior camera.
Sanson: Goood, that's it...
Suddenly the camers blows out, leaving the screen full of static.
Sanson: What!? Sh--, the camera's busted. What shall we do...?
Hanson: Think! There's got to be a way!
Crewman: The tidal current has stopped. The ebb tide will begin soon.
Grandis: (yelling into the microphone) What do you think you're doing!?
Sanson and Hanson: Boss!
Grandis: Listen up! From now on I'm giving the orders, and you'll
carry them out precisely!
Suddenly Nadia pushes up to the microphone.
Nadia: Jean! Can you hear me?
Jean: Nadia!
Nadia: Jean... I'm sorry.
Grandis: (breaking back in) Well, get going!
Sanson: Thanks, boss!
Hanson: We're right on it...
Grandis begins guiding the blinded Grantan by watching out the porthole.
Grandis: Now!
The Grantan's "Magic Hand" closes, but just misses the cable they
were trying to grab.
Grandis: A little to the right! There, that's just right... Good,
just like that... Grab it!
This time the grab is successful.
Jean, Hanson and Sanson: Wheew!
Grandis: Good, now move it five degrees right, just as you have it.
Goood. Ok, on to the last one!
Crewman: We're running out of time!
Nemo: Back up, with a small burst of speed.
Suddenly the tide rushes in, shaking up the Grantan while it is
holding the last mine.
Jean, Hanson, and Sanson: Waaugh!
Nemo: Has it begun!?
Grandis: Sanson! Hanson! Hold steady or you'll hit one of the mines!
Inside the Grantan, huge leaks begin as the pressure begins to overwhelm it.
An outside system also begins failing, throwing off sparks and smoke.
Jean: Wah! Waaugh!
Crewman: Tank approaching. At this rate we'll collide!
Grandis: What are you up to? Throw that mine away, fast!
The gripper is stuck, and Hanson tries in vain to get it to release.
Hanson: It won't move...
Grandis: Sanson! Hanson!
Hanson: Uggh!
Jean, Hanson, and Sanson all push on the lever at once. They are up to
their chests in water.
Jean, Hanson, and Sanson: One, two, puuush!
The grip releases, but the mine is still drifting towards the Nautilus.
Nemo: Full throttle, vertical ascent!
Crewman: We're going to hit the Grantan!
Nadia: Jean!
Jean suddenly has an inspiration. He grabs another lever and forces
it forward.
Jean: Uggh!
The Grantan's walking legs extend and catch on the top of the
Nautilus, allowing the Grantan to be pulled up, away from the mine. The
mine hits the side of the tunnel and explodes, and the other mines go
off in a chain reaction, but the Nautilus escapes!
Later, at the surface, Jean and the two henchmen are sitting in the
sun. The Grantan is hanging from a derrick, a total wreck.
Jean: The deck is hot, isn't it?
Sanson: To be able to feel something hot proves we're alive...
Jean: We're alive, all right.
Hanson: I didn't think the boss'd be satisfied with just one slap in
the face...
Sanson: ....Aaah, she was in tears when she hit us.
Hanson: Yeah... Nadia had been crying, too.
Sanson: So Jean, what are you thinking now?
Jean: When it comes to things like mines, the hatred is all mine!
(He's really punning on "kirai", which means both "sea mine" and "hate".)
Hanson and Sanson: ... Heh heh heh.
They all laugh.
