Nadia Vol 3,5:
The Nautilus' Greatest Crisis

"The Secret of Blue Water" is the adventures of Nadia, a mysterious circus girl, and Jean, an inventive boy, with jewel thieves, Captain Nemo of the Nautilus, a world-domination-seeking secret society, and more. I have a set of color manga that was made from the anime series which I will be translating here bit-by-bit. This is part 5 of volume 3, concerning a major crisis on the Nautilus.

You may prefer the version with Japanese.

The Nautilus' Greatest Crisis

Jean is working with a large electronic machine which heats a metal blade.

Jean: Hey, Haaanson, pull the switch.

He uses the hot metal blade to cut into the Grantan's hull.

Jean: This thermo-set piece of tektite from the engine room works just like I thought it would. It won't melt even at this heat.

Sanson: It's also thanks to this ship...

Fate enters. He's a crew member who has become Jean's friend.

Fate: Hey! What's up, Jean? How's it going?

Jean: Fate!

Fate: Has it been going well?

Jean: Yeah. The piece of tektite you gave us is just what we needed. Thanks!

Suddenly the hot instrument slips and falls to the floor. It begins to burn into the deck!

Jean: It's hot! Oh no! It'll burn a hole in the Nautilus! I'll shut down the current, quickly!

He races over and pulls the plug.

Jean: Just in time.

Then he notices everything is blurry. His glasses have fallen off.

Jean: Aaah! My glasses! My glasses are gone! My glasses, my glasses....

Then Nadia comes in.

Nadia: What's wrong? What are you yelling about?

Suddenly she steps on something, and there's a cracking noise. She has stepped on Jean's glasses and broken one lens.

Nadia: Ah! S-sorry!

Jean: It's all right. Something like this is bound to get broken sooner or later.

Fate: I like to fix broken things. I can almost always fix things, except for lost lives. Let me have that. I'll fix it for you.

Jean: Huh? You can fix it here?

Fate: Ummhmm.

Later, Fate brings them the repaired glasses.

Jean: Huh? You fixed it already? You really did it. Thank you, Fate! This is really a ship with good scientists handy.

Fate: Yes, that's true... Say, Jean! Things aren't going well between you and Nadia?

Jean: Huh?

Fate: In that case, try these!

Fate produces a bunch of flowers.

Jean: Where did you get these?

Fate: They were made on this ship. Well, see you later!

Jean gives the flowers to Nadia.

Jean: Here you are! It's a present.

Nadia: Ooh, they're pretty. Where did you get them?

Jean: They were made for us on this ship.

Nadia remembers the artificial flowers on Gargoyle's island and becomes instantly suspicious.

Nadia: What's going on with this ship with "scientists handy"? It's just like Gargoyle!

Meanwhile, on the bridge of the Nautilus...

Crewman: Approaching vessel identified as the Garfish!

Nemo: All hands to battle stations! Prepare for submerged combat!

Metal objects drop near the Nautilus.

Electra: We're being struck by something.

Nemo: Is it a trap?

Engineer: It's a new weapon. Powerful elecromagnets are messing up the magnetic field of our propulsion system.

Nemo: The engines are stopping. We can't move?...

Crewman: Garfish sighted! Approaching off the port bow! It's ramming us at full speed!

Nemo: No. Evade it!

Helmsman: It's not possible. We can't move!

Nemo: They're coming!

The Garfish rams them, trying to pierce into the hull with a sharp point. But they are driven back with a torpedo before the Nautilus is harmed.

Jean: Wow! We've thrown them off.

Engineer: The engines are completely useless. We have to surface right away and make repairs...

Nemo: Drain all tanks and surface!

The Nautilus surfaces. Unfortunately, they are in the sights of Captain Maybell and his fleet!

Sailor: We've found it at last. That blasted sea monster!

Captain Maybell: All ships prepare to fire. Target: the large submarine to port!

The fleet aims at the Nautilus.

Captain Maybell: Open fire!

Crewman: (on the Nautilus) It's a fleet of the American alliance.

Captain Maybell: Bwa ha ha ha ha! Sink, you monster!

Nemo: Submerge quickly!

Electra: It can't be done. It won't operate.

Nemo: Release pressurized air tanks 1 through 32!

Electra: But we'll lose our bouyancy!

Nemo: That doesn't matter! Open all the emergency valves!

Sailor: Target sinking!

Captain Maybell: Good riddance!

Crewman: (on the Nautilus) Depth 150 meters. Several leaks on the port side! We've hit bottom. Depth 200 meters.

Sailor: We finished them off unexpectedly quickly, didn't we?

Captain Maybell thinks this over.

Sailor: What country in the world could that ship have been from...

Meanwhile, Fate and other crewmen are working feverishly on repairs.

Fate: This one is already no good.

Suddenly there is a leak of radioactive gas! Radiation alarms go off.

Fate: Waagh!

Engineer: Poisonous radioactive gas is leaking out in auxilary engine sector 2!

Nemo: ... Seal off the auxilary engine sector completely!

Engineer: But Fate and two others are still in there!

Nemo: Forget about that. Seal it!

Jean hears that his friend Fate is trapped and pounds on the door of the compartment. Nadia is nearby.

Jean: Fate! Fate! Fate...

Jean clicks on the intercom.

Jean: Chief engineer! Please open this barrier.

Engineer: I can't do that... Inside there is filled with a hazardous substance. There's nothing more I can do!

Jean: This ship has such advanced science it should be able to do anything!

Engineer: This ship has gathered the most advanced science.... but that doesn't make us omnipotent gods. There's nothing more we can do...

Nadia: No! How can you stand by silently like that... Can't you do anything?

Engineer: ... I'm sorry. There's no way we can surface now.

Fate: (on the intercom) That's right... if we surfaced we'd fall prey to those warships!

Jean: Fate!

Fate: Jean, are you out there?

Jean: We'll save you....

Fate: It's ok. The Captain made the right decision. It's better to make a small sacrifice... This also is fate...

Jean: It's such a....

Now Nadia talks to the bridge on the intercom.

Nadia: Please! Please surface, Captain Nemo! Save Fate!

Nemo does not reply.

Nadia: Are you going to be a murderer again? Don't be so secretive about this ship! If you surface and surrender the battleships won't shoot us!

Fate: Nadia, the technology of this ship is too much to fall into man's hands yet. Please understand. Please don't speak badly of Captain Nemo because of this matter. He's a good man. It's because he's the man he is that I've been on this ship...

Fate: Captain Nemo! It's our request for this ship to dedicate itself to the destruction of Neo Atlantis! Please do this for us.

Fate: ....Jean, take care of yourself, all right? I hope your relationship with Nadia goes well. Those flowers I gave you may be just the thing!

Jean: Fate...

Fate: Well, then...

Suddenly the alarm goes off again and Fate's courage fails him.

Fate: N-no. I don't want to die yet! I still have things I want to do! I still...

Jean: Fate! Fate! Fate! Fate... Faaate!

Jean's sobs loudly. Grandis, Sanson, Hanson, and Electra have joined him in the corridor. All hang their heads in grief.

Later, the ship surfaces in a safe place. Jean and Nadia throw flowers into the sea as a memorial.

Jean: Fate... these are your flowers. We return them as a gift to you.

The Grandis Gang looks on from a distance. No other crew members are attending. A few are working on deck.

Sanson: Huh! What a crew they are. Even though their comrades have died...

Grandis: It's because they have no time for grieving...

Jean: That's right.... This ship is dedicated to the war against Neo Atlantis...

Jean grips the single flower he is holding, crushing it.

Jean: It will be a fight to the death...

Nadia looks on silently, worrying.
