Nadia Vol 4,3: Goodbye... Nautilus
"The Secret of Blue Water" is the adventures of Nadia, a mysterious
circus girl, and Jean, an inventive boy, with jewel thieves, Captain
Nemo of the Nautilus, a world-domination-seeking secret society, and
more. I have a set of color manga that was made from the anime series
which I will be translating here bit-by-bit. This is part 3 of volume
4, in which the Nautilus is destroyed in battle by Gargoyle's latest
weapon.

version with Japanese.
Nadia Vol 4,3:Goodbye... Nautilus
In Gargolye's airship...
Soldier: The Nautilus has entered Area 4. They're certainly going like
a moth into the flame.
Gargoyle: Indeed! This will be the final voyage...of the Nautilus.
Back on the Nautilus...
Crewman: 2000 meters to Kelmadik harbor!
Nemo: Hit them with active sonar.
Crewman: Aye-aye sir.
In a moment, the sonar reveals the attacker's pattern.
Crewman: The enemy subs are spreading out from 2 o'clock to 10o'clock
from our bow. There are six of them.
Nemo: That's not all... Most likely there are more astern and around us.
Gargoyle's men are watching a tactical display on the floor of his airship.
Soldier: The Nautilus has entered Area 3.
Officer: Execute plan D-2.
Soldier: Going to operation phase 1. Garfish 6 to 12, commence operations!
On the Nautilus bridge...
Crewman: I heard firing chambers being flooded! Range 2,200 meters!
The enemy subs fire a volley of torpedoes at once.
The torpedos are 60 seconds away from impact.
Nemo: Anti-torpedo defenses.
Electra: Aye-aye sir.
The Nautilus shoots out several missiles that break open and release
small explosive spheres. Most of the torpedoes hit them and explode,
but some continue towards the Nautilus.
Crewman: The barrage has broken through! A second wave is coming!
Nemo: Dive at full speed and evade! Just skim the bottom!
Helmsman: Roger!
Crewman: Here they come! In 5 seconds.
The torpedos skim over the Nautilus, all but one, which hits the ocean floor short
of the Nautilus and explodes.
Crewman: Just like we thought, Captain! If we'd stayed up there we would have
been wiped out...
Nemo: What are the Garfish doing?
Crewman: Six are in front, and 4 are approaching from starboard
at 2:00.
Nemo: All right then! We'll kill them. Lieutenant! Open fire with
all firing tubes at full charge with the flying bombs and guided missiles!
Electra: Roger! Opening firing tubes.
Nemo: Fire!
The missile's course takes them out of the water and back down towards
the Garfish.
Electra: Guided missiles have fired!
The missles explode near the Garfish subs.
Crewman: I detect the sound of subs destructing... six of them.
After another moment.
Crewman: I detect the sound of subs destructing... four more. We've
sunk all the ships that were capturing us.
Engineer: All ten ships?... The enemy didn't make a good showing
this time.
Nemo: How much of our fighting capacity remains?
Electra: We're down to one third. We're re-arming now.
Nemo: What's happened with the other Garfish?
Crewman: We're been captured by 5 more but, ... it's strange.
They're staying out of this part of the ocean.
Electra: Might they be preparing a long-distance bombardment?
Crewman: No. They seem to be out of range.
Engineer: They're pulling back from us?
Be prepared for an airstrike of depth charges! ......Or perhaps
something else coming from above.
Electra: Aye-aye sir.
Up in the zepplin Gargoyle plots his next move.
Soldier: The echo of the Nautilus has been confirmed. They have come
within range.
Gargolye: So sorry, dear Nemo, but you'll be the test subject for my
new weapon. Commence Operation Super-Catch!
Soldier: Entering operation phase 2. Preparing the Super-Catch tractor beam.
Soldier: Firing portal opened. Tractor beam device is lowering.
They push a lever and a giant magnet comes out of the bottom the
the zepplin.
Tractor beam prepared. Magnetic field stable. Power transmission from the
antigravity device.
Soldier: Target Nautilus acquired. Firing preparations completed.
Gargoyle: Fire the Super-Catch beam.
The giant electromagnet turns on, pulling on the submarine below the
water with terrific force!
Engineer: W-what!? What's happening?
Electra: The whole ship has been caught in a powerful magnetic field!
Nemo: It's the Super-Catch beam! Gargoyle, you've mananged to
complete it?
Gargolye: Well now, dear Nemo, will you be able to escape my new
weapon?
Electra: The ship is being dragged upwards!
Nemo: Downtrim. Blow all of the stern tanks!
Helmsman: But then the ship will tilt nose-down!
Nemo: That doesn't matter! It will be all right if we can break
loose from the magnetic field!
Electra: All personnel prepare for ship tilting!
In the cabin, Nadia, Jean, and the others slide on the tilted floor.
Jean and the others: Waagh!
Grandis: What in the world? Who ever heard of a ship acting like this?
Nemo: Engines to full throttle!
Gargolye: Hmmm. A futile attempt...
Helmsman: It's no good. We're getting sucked up!
Engineer: Engine room! Can't you give us more power!
Crewman: 30 meters to the surface!
Gargolye: And now, its form will be laid bare before our eyes: the
Nautilus.
With irresistable force the magnet pulls the Nautilus entirely out of the water!
Crewman: There's a gigantic flying object in the sky above us!
Gargolye's ship hovers overhead, dwarfing the small submarine.
Crewman: T-those rats...
Helmsman: Astounding.
Electra: That must be the air-battleship.
Just then, the door to the bridge opens and Grandis, Nadia, and the
others come in.
Electra: Non-millitary personnel are to take shelter!
Grandis: Not a chance! We've got just as much right to know what's
going on as you do!
They look up through the transparent roof and see Gargolyles ship above.
Hanson: Is that giant magnet causing this?
Jean: Wow!
Sanson: That bastard.
Marie: The sky's changing. What's that?
The airship deploys new weapons that look like a beam devices.
Gargoyle: Dear Nemo, this is your invitation from me to hell.
Before you receive it...
Soldier: The characteristic frequency of the Nautilus' space-titanium alloy
has been set.
Soldier 2: Energy charge completed.
Gargolye: Fire!
A high-frequency sound blasts out from the weapons to shake the Nautilus!
Electra: You've never been a man to hesitate in a situation like this.
You've changed, haven't you?... Shall I tell you the reason?... It's Nadia...
Nadia looks surprised.
Electra: It's because you can't bear to kill her...
Grandis: What nonsense! It may suit you to die, but
don't drag people who don't want to die into it!
Electra: As long as you are aboard this ship you must do as we say.
Grandis: Naah!
Electra: How dare you!? We can kill this ship's target and bury
Neo Atlantis.
Grandis: What nonsense. You bubble-brain! It's for the love that
you can't have. You want to die with Nemo, don't you?
Electra: What are you saying?
Grandis: Well, I'm sorry! We choose to live. Come on, we're out
of here
Sanson: All right! Excuse us, we'll just escape in the Grantan.
Jean: Um, wait for me!
The Grandis Gang and Jean leave the bridge.
Jean: If you escape in the Grantan, won't you be pulled in by the
giant magnet?
All three give him a confident look. Sanson pulls out his gun and
tosses it up and down in his hand.
Sanson: Look! This is made of iron, and it's not being pulled at
all, is it?
Hanson: In other words, he's saying that machine only affects the
super-alloy of the Nautilus.
Jean: Oh, I see... Well, are you really running away?
Sanson: Don't be silly. We just wanted to sound tough... In front
of Nemo.
Grandis: Yes, and I can't have that bubble-brain pulling a
suicide pact with my wonderful Nemo, can I?
Jean: All right, then! There's no point in giving up till the very end!
Back on the bridge, Electra is still arguing for the suicide option.
Electra: We have one shot left to fire! If we don't take this one
opening... how are we going to counterattack?!
Sanson: The first problem is, how are we going to get out of the hold?
Hanson and Jean: That's just what we wanted to talk about.
Sanson: The first problem is, how are we going to get out of this pinch?
Hanson and Jean: That's just what we wanted to talk about.
Nemo: (to Electra) ...There is a way. They have to open
a firing port to deliver the coup de grace. That may
give us an opening.
Hanson: (independently continuing Nemo's thought) At that instant,
we fire in a single shot from this side!
Jean: At that point, the barrier has to be down.
Grandis: The reason for doing it then is that there will
be a huge explosion.
Hanson: That's right! And then I believe we can seize
the opportunity to counterattack.
Electra: Poppycock! Where is this shot supposed to come from?
Hanson: Well, as for that...
Grandis: All right. We'll never know unless we try.
Sanson: It's a slim chance, but if we believe in ourselves
we can do it!
Electra: ...by human muscle-power!?
Nemo: Yes! Force open the guided missile ports on manual power.
It's urgent that all available people go there and operate the cranks.
Then someone must take aim at the gun port...
Hanson: (on the intercom) Leave that part up to us!
The Grandis Gang is sitting in the Grantan, ready to go.
Hanson: Because we'll go out in the Grantan.
Sanson: And then let us grab the chance for a counterstrike!
Nemo ponders silently for a moment.
Grandis: Keep well... Captain Nemo.
Nemo: As you ask.
Grandis: Weeell, let's go! Before that...
She has noticed Jean is stowing away behind some boxes. Sanson
tosses him out.
Jean: Partner. You said you'd take me with you! Don't do this! Why?
Sanson: You've got to look after Nadia, Marie, and King. It's
your duty as a man. In other words, Jean... you should leave the
fighting to others and look after your own survival.
Jean: What do you mean by that!?
Sanson: ... I don't want you to die!
Jean: You either, Sanson.
Sanson: Obviously! Well, take care of yourself.
Jean watches sadly as Sanson gets back into the Grantan.
Sanson: Our lives are sure full of ups and downs, aren't they.
Grandis: Yep! Better than dying of boredom. If we survive this time...
Well! Let's get going!
Suddenly there is a huge explosion outside.
Grandis: What? What's that?
Crewman: They've gone to concentrated fire from the Garfish!
The Garfish subs are firing up at the Nautilus from all sides, causing
great damage to the hull.
Helmsman: Blast it! The firing ports won't open at all!
Sanson: With the power out, this port won't open either!
Grandis: I don't care! Full speed ahead!
Sanson: All right!
The Grantan fires its own cannon and breaks through the hatch into the air!
Sanson: CHAAAANGE to flight mode!
Hanson pushes the button and the Grantan instantly converts to a balloon.
The enemies fire at it but are unable to bring it down.
Hanson: The baloon's techtite material is stretching... It'll hold
for the moment...
Sanson pulls his gun and gets out of the Grantan's hatch.
Hanson: Sorry, there's only one round of armor-piercing bullets.
Grandis: Please do it, Sanson...
Sanson: Leave it to me! I'm a natural-born marksman!
Gargoyle: They have brought us raw material for our target practice...
Explosions continue to hit the Nautilus, and Marie is wailing. Nadia
sits by herself and thinks, while crew members call out damage reports.
Crewman 1: The second vertical engine is half-damaged!
Crewman 2: There's no answer from the starboard residence ward.
Crewman 3: What's happening in the workroom!?
Crewman 4: I don't know! No!... It must already be destroyed.
Nadia suddenly has one of her "great ideas" and jumps up. She goes out on main deck,
apparently thinking she can get Gargoyle to stop attacking!
Electra: Nadia!
Nadia: Please, stop! I'll give you the Blue Water, if you'll only stop the killing!
Gargoyle watches with a zoomed-in view from his airship.
Soldier: Lord Gargoyle, it's Nadia.
Gargoyle: Oho... So of course she was on the Nautilus, was she?
It's amusing that they brought her along.
Gargoyle activates a tractor beam and starts to pull Nadia from the deck.
Jean, at another hatch, sees this happening.
Jean: Nadia!
Nadia: Jeaaan!
Jean: Argh! (Then an idea comes to him.) That's it!
Gargoyle: Very soon we'll give them the finishing blow!
Prepare the launching of the extermination projectile!
We can hunt for Nemo's Blue Water later on, at our leisure.
My Lord the Emperor, you will borrow its power..
Sanson takes aim...
Sanson: There it is!
But just then a huge bomb is dropped from Gargoyle's airship!
Crewman: If we take another shot like that we'll be helpless!
The airship begins to launch another shot.
Sanson: Are you still working on the Nautilus' hatch!?
The workmen force the hatch open by hand, preparing the way for
a follow-up shot after Sanson creates a weakness.
Hanson: It's ooopened!
Sanson: This next one's our chance!
Grandis: If it hits it will be a miracle...
Sanson: You call it a "miracle", but it's due to my own power!
His shot hits the next bomb as it is coming out of the hatch, and it
explodes into the Gargoyle's ship, smashing the attack port and
jamming the bomb in place.
Grandis: We did it!
Just then, a shot penetrates their balloon and their faces fall.
Meanwhile, Jean is using his remote-control rocket to save Nadia
from the tractor beam.
Jean: Aaah! Do it! Go-oo!
The rocket hits the source of the beam and destroys it. Nadia falls back
towards the deck.
Nadia: Yaaah!
Since she is an expert acrobat, she manages to land on her feet without harm.
Jean: Nice landing!
With the bomb stuck in the hatch, the airship is vulnerable to an
attack from the Nautilus. Nemo gives the order.
Nemo: Now. Attack!
The Nautilus crew launches a missile at the airship using manual override.
There is a huge explosion, and the giant magnet that was holding the Nautilus
suspended is destroyed! The Nautilus drops back towards the water.
Helmsman: We did it. The magnetic force is weakening.
Nemo: We're going to fall! All hands brace for shock!
The Nautilus falls back into the water.
Gargoyle: ... How could this have happened?
Soldier: S-sorry, Sir.
Gargoyle: Enough. Put your efforts into fighting the fire.
The Nautilus is sunk at long last... the fools have gone to
their fate...
The Nautilus continues to sink.
To be continued in part 4... "Electra the Traitor"
