"My Neighbor Totoro" is a classic Japanese children's film by Hayao Miyazaki about a magical forest-creature named Totoro, who lives near a family with two young girls that has just moved to the neighorhood.
I borrowed a children's book made from the movie from my Japanese teacher, and I have translated it here.

いうのは、メイが つけた なまえです。
Totoros are creatures who have lived in Japan from long before the time of man. They eat acorns and other nuts and live a care-free life in the forest. But usually people can't see them. Generally they sleep during the daytime, and at night they like to play an ocarina. They are able to fly. "Totoro" is the name Mei gave to them.

Little Totoro
About 100 years old.

Big Totoro
About 1300 years old. He is over two meters tall.
ネコバス み
トトロたちが のる バス。にんげんわに見えず、

ネコバスが そばを とおると、つむじ風が

ふいたように かんじます。足は 12本。

空も とべるし、水の 上でも はしれます。
Catbus
The bus that Totoros ride. People cannot see it,
but when the Catbus passes close by it feels like a whirlwind
is blowing. It has 12 legs. It can also fly, so it
can run over water.

くろい ほこりのかたまり。
Dust Bunnies
Balls of black dust.
たたたた がったん、とととと がったん。
ちい
小さな トラクが、にもつを いっぱい
みち
つみこんで いなかの でこばこ道を すすみます。
ごがつ にち び
きようは、五月の 日よう日。セツキとメイが
ひっこしてきたのです。
Putt putt putt rattle rattle, chug chug chug rattle rattle. The little truck is full to the brim with baggage, advancing down the middle of the narrow country road. Today is a Sunday in May. Satsuki and Mei are moving, you see.
第一章 おばけやしき
Chapter 1: The Haunted House
「おとうさん、すてきな ところね！」
「ねっ、おとうさん。」
サツキとメイが いいました。田んぼや
畑。みどりの 森。なんだか たのしい
ことが はじまりそう……。
サツキとメイは、わくわくして います。
"Daddy, it's a wonderful place, isn't it!" "Isn't it, Daddy," said Satsuki and Mei. Rice paddies and farmlands. Green forests. It seemed like something fun was starting. Setsuki and Mei were thrilled.
「さあ、ついたよ。」おとうさんの こえに、
くさ
ふたりは とびだしました。草ばうばうの
いえ
にわの むこうに、ふるばけた 家が たって
ねん ひと
います。もう、なん年も 人が すんで
いなかったのでしょう。
"Well, here we are," said Father, and the two of them leaped out. The old weathered house stood beyond a garden overgrown with grass. It looked like no-one had lived in it for years.
「わあっ、ばろ〜！」
「おばけやしきみた〜い」

でも、サツキと メイは、ひと目でこの
おんばろやしきが、気に いりました。
"Oooh, it's old!"
"It looks like a haunted house!"
But even though it looked like a haunted house to them,
Satsuki and Mei really liked it.

「メイ、見て ごらん。」サツキは、家の

森をゆびさしました。てつぺんには、大きな

大きな 木が あります。「大きいねえ……。」
"Oh Mei, look!" said Satsuki, pointing to a mountain of thick forest near the house. At the very top was a huge, huge tree. "Wow, it's big..."
み つかもり
ふたりは 見あげて いると、「あれは、塚森の
いえ あまど
くすのきだよ。」おとうさんが、家の 雨戸を
あけながら いいました。
As they were staring at it, Father said "That's the Camphor Tree of Tsuka forest," opening the sliding door of the house.
と
「さあ、うらの 戸を あけて おいで。」
おとうさんは、サツキに かぎをわたしました。
"Say, please open the door on the other side," Father said, as he handed Satsuki the key.
おお ぐち
サツキとメイは、大はりきり。うら口へ
はしって いくと、さびついた かぎを
あけました。
Satsuki and Mei were full of excitement. They ran to the back door and opened it with the rusty key.
なか
「あれえ、中は まっくら……。」
と おもった とたん。
ざざ――っ！
ものすごく たくさんの まっくろな
かたまりが、いっせいに、だいどころの
おくへ にげて いったでは ありませんか。
"Hey, it's pitch dark in here," they thought. But at that instant, whissh! Wasn't that a whole lot of awful black globs scurrying away all at once into hidden places in the kitchen?
み
（見た？ いまの。）
（うん。おばけかな？）
ふたりは かおを 見あわせ、おもいきり
さけびました。「わあ〜〜っ！」
でも、だいどころは、しーんとしずまり
かえって います。おそるおそる 中へ
はいっていきましたが、もう、なーんにも
いないようです。
"Did you see that? Just now."
"Uh-huh. Wonder if they were ghosts?"
The two girls looked at each other, gathered their courage and yelled, "Yaaaah!" But the kitchen returned to silence and stillness. They went in cautiously, but there still seemed to be nothing, nothing at all.
きょろきょろして いると、おとうさんが
やって きました。

「さあ、しごと しごと。つぎは、ニかい
の まどを あけましょう。かいだんの
はい ぐち
入り 口は、どこに あるのかな？」
「えっ、二かい？」
「かいだんが あるの？」

ふたりは、目をかがやかせて かいだんを
さがします。
「メイ、あったよー！」
As they were searching restlessly, Father came along.
"Hey, there's work to do. Next, we should open the
second-floor windows. I wonder where the door to the stairs is?"
"Um, the second floor?"
"There are stairs?"
Their eyes lit up and they started looking for the stairs.
"Mei, I found them!"
それにしても、なんて くらい かいだん
でしょう……。と、その とき。こん、こん、
うえ
こーん。まっくらな 上の ほうから、なにかが
おちて きました。どんぐり です。
But what a dark stairway it was... And then, at that moment: tap, tap, taap. Something fell down from the pitch-dark top of the stairs. It was an acorn.
に
二かいに なにか いる！ ふたりは
くらやみを 見あげました。
「メイ、いって みよう。」
「うん。」
There was something alive up there! Both of them
stared up into the darkness.
"Mei, let's go and see."
"Uh-huh."
二かいは まっくら、なんにも 見えません。
サツキは、いそいで まどを あけました。
ひかり
ぎ、ばたん。あかるい 光が さしこむと,
うしろのほうで ざざ――っと くろい
ものが！ また いた！ メイは、うしろの
かべを にらみました。
The second floor was pitch-dark, they couldn't see anything. Satsuki hurried and opened the window. Creak, thud. As bright sunlight shone in, from behind there was a "whissh" and there were the black things! There they were again! Mei glared at them as they went behind the wall.
そと
外では、おとうさんが、せっせと にもつを
はこんでいます。
「おとうさーん、この うち、なにか いるよー。」
Outside, Father was diligently carrying in luggage.
"Daaddy, there are *things* in the house."
サツキの こえに、おとうさんは、まどを
見あげました。
「そりゃあ すごいぞ！おばけやしきに
すむのが、おとうさんの ゆめだったんだ。
おおっとっとっとっ……。」
Father looked up at the window when he heard Satsuki's voice.
"Wow, that's amazing! We're living in a real haunted house,
just like I've always dreamed. Whoooops..."
おお
大きな にもつを かかえ、おとうさんは、
ころびそうです。
Father was carrying a big box and he almost fell.
て
「たいへん！手つだわなくちゃ。」サツキは
した
あわてて 下へ おりて いきました。でも、
メイは、ひとり のこって,かべを
にらみつづけて います。
"How awful! I've got to help him." said Satsuki and she rushed downstairs. But Mei remained by herself, and kept staring at the wall.
なんだろう、なんだろう。メイは かべに
ちかより、おそるおそる、すきまいに
ゆびを つっこみました。
What could those things be, what could they be? She went up to the wall, cautiously, and stuck her finger in a crack.
ぶわっ！まくらな ものが いっせいに
とびだし、ざざーーっと てんじょうの
てんじょうの ひびわれの中に にげこんで
いきます。
FOOM! All at once the pitch-black things burst out, "whissh!", and hid in a crack in the ceiling.
びっくりして つったって いる メイの
まえに、ふわふわと くろい かたまりが
ひと
一つ、おちて きました。
As Mei was standing astonished, a single feather-light black lump floated down in front of her.
いっ
どうやら 一ぴき、 にげおくれたようです。
ようし……、えいっ！
「つかまえた！ おねえちゃーん。」
おお
メイは、大いそぎで かいだんを おりて
いきました。
It seemed that one of the creatures was slow in finding a hiding place.
Easy.... Aha!
"Caught it! Satsu-ki!"
Mei went downstairs in a big hurry.
むちゅうで はしって いくと、目の まえに
しらない おばあちゃんが たって いました。
て
「となりの おばあちゃんだよ。手つだいに
きて くれたんだ。」
おとうさんが いいましたが、メイは
それどころじゃ ありません。
She was engrossed in running when a strange old woman appeared before her eyes. "This is the grandmother from next door. She came to help us out," said Father, but Mei was not paying attention.
そっと 手を ひらくと、あれれ、からっぽ。
おまけに りょう手は まくろけ。
あし
足の うらまで まっくろです。
She carefully opened her hands, but they were empty. On top of that, her hands were black. The soles of her feet were black.
「ああっ、わたしの」 足も まっくろ！」
サツキが さけぶと、おばあちゃんは、
いいました。
「ほほう、ススワタリが でたな。だあれも いない
いえ
ふるい 家には ススワタリが わいてな
そこらじゅう、ススと ほこりだらけに
しちまうんだ。なあに、しんぱいは いらねえ。
わるさは しないし、人が くれば いつの まにか
いなく なるでな。」
"Aaah, my feet are black, too," cried Satsuki, and then the little old woman spoke.
"Hoho, there are Dust Bunnies about. They slip into old houses where nobody lives, spreading soot and dust. Don't worry, now. They are harmless, and when people come they go away."
ぐち おとき こ
うら口に、男の 子が やって きました。

おばあちゃんの うちの カン太 です。
「これ、かあちゃんから ばあちゃんに。」
A boy came to the back door. It was Kanta, from the grandmother's home. "Here, it's from Ma for Granny."
カン太は、おこったような かおで、サツキに
おかもちを わたすと、とびだして いきました。
Kanta, with an angry expression, handed a basket to Satsuki and immediately jumped back.
「あ、ちょっと まって。」 サツキが よびとめると…
"Um, wait a second." Satsuki objected...
カン太は、くるりと ふりむいて さけびました。
「やーい、おまえんち、おっぱけやーしき！」
Kanta ran off, turned and yelled. "Yaah, you live in a haunted house!"
「なによ。」サツキ だって、まけては いません。
"How dare you!" retorted Satsuki, not to be defeated.
「べーだ！ 大きな おせわ。」でも、カン太の
もって きた おかもちの なかみは、とても
おいしい おはぎでした。
"Nyaah! Big deal." But the contents of the basket Kanta brought were a very delicious dessert.
こう して、サツキと メイの っこしは
おわりました。その よるーー。
After that, Satsuki and Mei's moving day was over. That night---.
がさごそ がさごそ、ススワタリも ひっこしです。
かぜ つかもり
ふわふわと 風に のって、塚森の ほうへ
とんで いく。
"Rustle, rustle," the Dust Bunnies were moving out. Light as air, they rode the wind, flying towards Tsuka Forest.
ほー、ほー。ふくろうでしょうか。塚森から
ふしぎな なきごえが きこえました。
Whoo, whoo. Could that have been an owl? From Tsuka Forest came a mysterious crying sound.
ひ
つぎの 日。サツキと メイと おとうさんは、
おかあさんの おみまいに でかけました。
こんどの ひっこしは、もう すぐ たいいんする
くうき
おかあさんを、空気の きれいな いなかの
いえ
家に むかえる ためなのです。
Next day. Satsuki and Mei and Father went out to visit Mother. Because of this move, when Mother got out of the hospital soon she would come to the house in the fresh air and beautiful countryside and get well.
「よく きて くれた わね。あたらしい おうちは
どう？」おかあさんは、うれしそうに いいました。
"I'm so glad you came to see me. How is our new house?" Mother looked happy.
「うん。あのね……。」サツキの ないしょばなしを
きくと、おかあさんの かおが、ぱっと かがやきした。
"OK. It's like this..." whispered Satsuki, and Mother's face suddenly became radiant.
「えっ、おばけやしき？」
「おかあさん、おばけやしき すき？」メイが、
しんぱいそうに たずねます。
"Haunted, really?"
"Mommy, do you like haunted houses?" asked Mei, looking worried.
はや
「もちろんよ！ 早く たいいんして, おばけに
あいたいわ。」
"Of course I do! I'm going to get out of here quickly and see a ghost."
それを きいて、サツキも メイも、ますます
こんどの うちが すきに なります。
Hearing this, Satsuki and Mei liked the house more and more.
ひ
そして、おかあさんが、かえって くる 日が、
まちどおしくて たまらないのでした。
After this, waiting for the day when Mother would come home was almost unbearable.
