The Ocean Band
広い 広い 海の 上を、一せきの船が すすんで いった。
この船で はたらいて いる 人たちは、音楽が すきで、
みんなで 楽隊を 作って いた。夕方に なると、手の
あいて いる 人たちは、かんぱんに ならんで がっそうを
した。夕日に かがやく 海に、音楽が ひびいて、とても
すてきだった。
Once there was a ship sailing the wide, wide sea. All the crew who worked the ship loved music, so they all formed a band. In the evening, all hands who were free lined up on deck and performed a concert. As the sea glittered in the sunset, the music resounded, and it was very lovely.
ところで、そのうち、船の 人たちは、おかしな ことに
気が ついた。
By the way, as they were doing this, the sailors noticed something funny.
いつでも、音楽が はじまると、くじらが 三頭、なみの上に
出て くる。はじめは、ずっと 遠くに いたけれど、毎日毎日
近よって、今では、船のそばまで 来る。そして、音楽に
合わせては、大きな 体を うごかしたり、しおを ふき
上げたり する。
Every time the music began, three whales surfaced above the waves. At first they remained at a distance, but they got closer day by day and at last they came up right beside the boat. Then they would move their enormous bodies and spout in time with the music.
くじらだけでは なかった。すばやい さめも よって
くるし、いるかも、かつおも、まぐろも、小さい 魚も……。
とにかく、びっくりするほど たくさん、魚が あつまって
くる。楽隊は、すっかり はりあいが できて、毎日、元気よく
楽器を 鳴らした。
It wasn't just whales. Swift sharks came along, and dolphins, bonito, tuna and little fish. Anyhow, a surprisingly large number of fish gathered together. The band was inspired by them, every day, and vigorously played their instruments.
ところが、ある 日の 夕方 近く、きゅうに 空が
くらくなったと 思うと、すごい あらしが やって 来た。
その 夜は、ひどかった。まっくらな 中で、風も、海も、
ごうごうと ほえ立てる。見上げるような 大なみが、
つぎつぎに とびかかって きて、船を 上へ 下へと
ふりまわした。船は、キー キーと 音を 立てた。
However, one day as evening approached, it seemed to them that the sky suddenly became dark, and a dreadful storm came up. That night was terrible. The were in the middle of pitch darkness, with the wind and sea making a thundering howl. From above them huge waves, one after another, dashed at them, flinging the boat up and down. The boat was creaking loudly.
そのうち、船の エンジンが 止まり、どこかに あなが
あいて、水が ながれこんで きた。みんなは、水を
くい止めようと、ひっしに なって はたらいた。水の
力が 強くて、もう だめだと 思った ことも、なんどか
あったが、ふしぎと、船は しずまなかった。
And then the engine died, and water came pouring in through a hole somewhere. They all worked desperately to stop the water. The force of the water was strong, but though many times they thought all was lost, the ship mysteriously did not sink.
やれやれ！ やっと あらしが しずまって、朝が 来た。
とんで いく 雲の 間から、青い 空も 見えだした。みんなは、
せっせと 水を かい出したり、あなを しゅうりしたり して
いたが、ふいに、かんぱんに いる なかまが、大声で
みんなに 知らせた。
Thank heavens! At last the storm subsided and morning came. Then they could see blue sky through a gap in the clouds. All of them were busily cleaning off the water and repairing the hole, when suddenly one of the men on deck shouted to the others:
「おうい、来て みろ。おかしいぞ。船の 下に、くじらが
いるぜ。」
"Hey, come look at this! It's amazing! There are whales under the ship!"
やあ、ほんとだ！ 三頭の くじらが、まるで、船を
かつぐみたいに、船の 下に 入って いる。それに、さあも、
いるかも、ほかの 魚たちも、びっしり いっぱい あつまって、
船が しずまないように、下から おし上げて いた。
So there were! It looked like the three whales were carrying the ship on their shoulders, having come under it. Besides that, the sharks, dolphins, and a lot of other fish also had packed together to boost up the ship from below so that it would not sink.
「やあ、きみたち、すまないねえ。ごくろうだけど、もう ほん
の ちょっと たのむ。今、大いそぎで、あなを ふさいで いる
からね。」
"Hey guys, thanks a bunch! You did us a big favor, but would you keep it up a little longer? We're plugging the hole as fast as we can."
すると、くじらが、ちょっぴり しおを ふいて へんじした。
At this, the whales replied by spouting a little bit of salt water.
「ふうう。なあに、いいよ。ごゆっくり。でも、船って おもい
もんだいねえ。こんなの、はじめて かついだよ。ところで、夕べは
楽隊を、とうとう やらなかったねえ。」
"Whoo. We don't mind. You're welcome. But the ship's a heavy problem. This is the first time we've carried something on our backs. By the way, we missed the concert last night."
「うん、あらしで、それどころじゃ なかったのさ。しごとが
すんだら、たっぷり 間かせるよ。」
"Yeah, because of the storm we didn't do it. When we finish work, you can have a nice long one."
船のしゅうりが すっかり おわると、今日は、船長さんから
ボーイさんまで、みんなが、楽器を もって、かんぱんに
ならんだ。楽器の足りない 人たちは、さらや バケツを
もって いた。
When the boat repairs were all done, it was day, and everyone from the captain to the cabin boy brought the musical instruments and lined up on deck. The ones there were not enough instruments for brought things like plates and buckets.
さて、それから、楽隊は、知って いる かぎりの 音楽を、
つぎから つぎへと えんそうした。音に 心が こもって
いるから、ほんとに すばらしかった。くじらも いるかも、
小さい 魚も、あばれものの さめさえも、うっとり 聞いて
いた。やがて、くじらが、太い 声で 言った。
Well then, after that, they performed a concert with all the music they knew, on and on. Because it was music straight from the heart, it was truly wonderful. The whales, dolphins, small fishes, and even the ferocious sharks were listening with rapture. Before long, a whale spoke up in a deep voice.
「いいねえ。まったく いい。いくら聞いても、あきないねえ。
そういうの、自分で やれたら、どんなに いいかなあ。」
"Good, isn't it? Absolutely good. We can listen as much as we want and never get tired of it. How good it would be if we could do it for ourselves!"
そこで、船の 人たちは 言って みた。
「それなら、この 楽器、どれか あげようか。」
At this, the sailors tried saying, "In that case, shall we give you each one of these instruments?"
「ほんとかね。それは すまないねえ。もらえたら、それは
うれしいねえ。」
"Really? Thanks a lot! We'd be so happy if we got them."
「いいとも、いいとも。船を たすけて くれたんだもの、
そのくらい なんでも ないよ。いったい、どれが ほしいん
だい？」
"Fine, fine. It's nothing compared to the help you gave us, saving the ship. Out of all these which do you want?"
「ぼくらだったら、その ふいて 鳴らすのが いいな。
ずいぶん 気分が よさそうだから。」
"If it were up to us, those you play by blowing would be good. Because you seem to have such a good feeling when you play them."
そこで、船の人たちは、らっぱを くじらたちに、一つずつ
なげて やった。
Then, the sailors threw a bugle to each of the whales.
すると、さめたちが、ガバッと 首を つき出した。
「おうい。それなら、おれたちにも くれないか。
ほら、ふいて 鳴らすのでさ、細くて、かわいらしい
音の 出る やつ。あれが いいや。」
After this, the sharks butted up their heads to the ship. "Hey, aren't you going to give us something too? Look, we want those blowing instuments you were making delicate, sweet sounds with. That'll be good."
「いいとも、いいとも。おやすい ご用だ。」
船の 人たちは そう 言って、ピッコロなどを なげて
やった。
"Fine, fine. No sweat." Saying this, the sailors threw them piccolos and so forth.
いるかたちも、スポッと とび上がった。
「もらえるんなら、わたしたちも ほしいけど。
わたしたちだったら、その ひいて 鳴らすのが、
とっても すきだなあ。じいんと するような 音が
出るものね。」
The dolphins also jumped up with a splash. "We'd also like something, if we may. If it were up to us, we really like the ones you play with a bow. They make a sound like 'eeeee'."
「いいとも、いいとも。さあ、どうぞ。」
船の 人たちが、バイオリンや ビオラや チェロなどを
なげて やると、いるかは、また とび上がって、うまく
うけ止めた。
"Fine, fine. Here you are." The sailors threw them things like violins, violas, and chellos, and the dolphins, again leaping, deftly caught them.
こうして、魚たちは、みんな めいめい 楽器を もらった。
小さな 魚たちも、トライアングルや カスタネットを
ほうって もらった。
In this way, each fish got an instrument. The little fishes also were thrown triangles and castanets.
船の 人たちが よびかけた。
「さあ、やって ごらん。鳴らし方は 知ってるかい？」
The sailors called, "Ok, try them out please. Do you know how to play them?"
「うん、ずいぶん 見てたからね、おぼえた つもりだけど。
まあ、やって みるよ。」
くじらが そう 言て、ブー！ と 鳴らした。いや、
それからが たいへんな さわぎ。
"Yes, we've been watching carefully with the intention of learning, but we're not sure. Well, we'll try it," said the whales, and played a "BLAT!". Alas, after that came an awful din.
ブーブー、キーキー、リンリン、カチャカチャ……。耳も
つぶれるかと 思うくらい。
BLAT-BLAT, SQUEAK-SQUEAK, DING-DING, KACHUNK-KACHUNK. It was almost enough that they thought their ears would be deafened.
でも、いつの間にか、音が そろうように なって きた。
そして、聞いた ことも ない、ふしぎな 音楽が、なみの
上に ひびきわたった。船の 人たちは、何もかも
わすれて、じいっと 聞きほれた。夕やけで、海は、もも色や
みどり色に かがやいて いた。やがて、魚たちの 音楽は、
しずかに やんだ。さいしょに、くじらたちが、
「どうも、いろいろ ありがとう。じゃ、さようなら。」と
言うと、ズボッと 水に もぐった。
But in a short time the sound balanced out. Then, mysterious music such as they had never heard before resounded across the waves. The sailors forgot everything, listening enraptured. With the sunset, the sea was lit up in pink and green. Not long after, the fishes' music quietly came to an end. First saying, "Thank you. Many, many thanks. And now, goodbye," the whales dove into the water with a "sploosh."
「や、では、いずれ また。」
と さめも、パシャッと もぐった。
Saying, "Well, be seeing you sometime," the sharks also dove with a splash.
「さようなら。ほんとに 楽しかった。」
と、いるかたちも、なみの 間に かくれて いった。ほかの
魚たちも、みんな、広い 広い 海の どこかに かえって
いった。
Saying, "Goodbye. We really enjoyed it," the dolphins also disappeared into the waves. All the other fish went back to their homes somewhere in the wide, wide sea.
これから 後、その あたりの 海を 船が 通ると、海の
どこかから、ふしぎな 音楽が ひびいて くる。
After this, whenever ships came though this area, mysterious music echoed from somewhere in the sea.
うつくしい 夕やけの 時などは、ほんとに すばらしいと
いう 話だよ。
They said it was truly wonderful on evenings with beautiful sunsets, and other such times.
