Born in Phoenix, Arizona and raised throughout the Willamette Valley of Oregon,
Karl discovered a passion for music very early. The circumstances that steered
him toward any interest in music were unique, as he explains: "I grew up
in a very artistic family, where my brother & both sisters showed extraordinary
talent toward drawing, painting, anything visually artistic, and I showed none
of that ability. My father was fond of saying that the only thing I could ever
draw was flies." So as not to discourage their apparently un-artistic child,
Karl's parents bought his first guitar, and provided lessons to their 6 year
old son. The rest took care of itself. Karl took to music quickly, studying
voice, guitar, drums, and piano and began playing professionally at age 13. His first gig was a two year stint with Capital recording artist Joni Harms. When Joni reached some national acclaim & required a touring band, Karl’s parents thought it best that he graduate high school first. He spent the next several years attending high school, then college as a music major, and performing with different Portland area bands. "The live music scene was thriving then, & I learned a lot playing anything & everything". He performed top forty, blues, country, rock, and jazz during these years. In 1989, Karl joined McKenzie River, and enjoyed the life of a successful, professional musician. For 6 years, they toured, recorded and performed with some of the biggest acts of the day. "We performed with Alabama, George Strait, The Judds, Garth Brooks, Randy Travis, and many others on great stages in front of thousands of people.” Life on the road with a growing family took a huge toll, & Karl quit live performance when his family moved to the Seattle area in 1995. Karl & his wife owned & operated 2 restaurant/lounges over the last 9 years - The Redondo Grill in Des Moines (sold in July of 2002), and Eli's 104th Avenue Roadhouse in Kent. Karl met Roger & Jesse from The Enders Brothers after hiring the band to perform at Eli's. When the band lost its drummer in the summer of 2004, Karl agreed to fill in until a replacement was found. One year, the sale of Eli's, a meeting of minds, a band name-change, and many great shows later, the band is no longer looking for a replacement. |
