Scrollsaw work is my favorite. I'm not sure why - but perhaps it's the attention to detail. Scrollsaw work takes many forms. I'll show a few that I've done. Some are painted - some are not. It's a great form of woodworking. The example at the left is seven different levels. They are cut, painted and the all assembled to create the art form that you see. What do you think? I've made several of these and plan to make more. My girls all plan to have one in their homes.
Scrollsaw work is interesting. The wood used varies from regular pine (1/4' thick) to expensive Baltic plywood. It can be used for small, detailed work, to large shelves and such. It produces fine wooden products and has subtle shading.
For crafts, the scrollsaw is used as a "cut-out" device. These simple (wood working) reindeer were cut with the scrollsaw. Little or no finishing was necessary on the cut edges. Of course the painting is a different story. I was very pleased with these. Linda pointed them out in a craft magazine.
Scrollsaw work can also get very detailed. This work is several layers of 1/8" plywood that has been cut, sanded and then painted. All the work is with small, fragile parts. But - the results are very satisfying. This is a plan from Cherry Tree. I have several more plans - some are even more elaborate. Now I need some time.
