We open on an overhead and behind shot. We are looking
down on a large open field, surrounded by trees, reminiscent of the clearing in
"Full Engagement." It is obviously set up for an outdoor wedding. We
see chairs, all of them occupied, arranged on both sides of a white-paper aisle.
At the front, we see a trellis arch covered in green ivy and roses of colors.
Standing in front of the trellis is the minister, and in front of him are the
groom, his best man, and a groomsman. The other side of the aisle is still
empty. At the back of the aisle is a white tent.
Suddenly, music fills the air from a piano situated to the
right of the arch. It is a beautiful classical selection. The congregation
instinctively turns to watch the back. A bride's maid comes out of the tent to
make her walk down the aisle, followed by a young ring-bearer, and the
maid-of-honor. As the maid-of-honor reaches the front, the music changes to
Pachabel's Canon in D, and the congregation rises. The camera follows the bride,
on the arm of her escort, down the aisle. It is now obvious to the viewers that
the groom is none other than CDR HARMON RABB, JR.
His best man is CDR STURGIS TURNER, and LT
BUD ROBERTS, rounds out the trio with his son, AJ
ROBERTS as the ring-bearer. Officiating over the ceremony is CHAPLAIN
TURNER. The maid… matron-of-honor is LT HARRIET
SIMMS, and CHLOE MADISON is the other
bride's maid.
The bride, on the arm of ADM AJ
CHEGWIDDEN reaches the front, and HARM
flashes the bride one of his trademark "flyboy" grins as he reaches
out to take her hand. CHEGWIDDEN briefly lifts the
bride's veil to lightly kiss her cheek, it is LTC SARAH
MACKENZIE. He retreats to the bride's side of the aisle. As the camera
pans, we take in some of the other guests: FRANK &
TRISH BURNETT, SERGEI ZHUKOV, an older woman
we assume is SARAH RABB, JACK
KEETER, CAROLYN IMES, ALAN
& JACKIE MATTONI, KATE PIKE, ANNIE
& JOSH PENDRY, THERESA COULTER, BOBBIE
LATHAM, ELIZABETH HAWKES & a man we
assume is HER HUSBAND, MEREDITH
CAVANAUGH, KYLE ANDERSON, MARTHA
ANDERSON & HER HUSBAND, MEG
AUSTIN & A MAN, FRANCESCA PERETTI, OWEN
SEBRING, and many others.
The camera returns to the front as the CHAPLAIN
says, "Dearly beloved, we are gathered here today…"
CUT TO: Opening credits and first
commercial.
"Do you, Harmon Rabb, Jr., take Sarah Grace MacKenzie
as your lawfully wedded wife? To have and to hold; for richer and for poorer? In
sickness and in health, until death do you part?"
"I do."
"And do you, Sarah Grace MacKenzie, take Harmon Rabb,
Jr. as your lawfully wedded husband? To have and to hold; for richer and for
poorer? In sickness and in health, until death do you part?"
"I…"
A piercing scream cuts through the air…
Harm bolts upright in bed and looks around in confusion as
the woman who had so recently been speaking her vows to him walks into the room.
She is humming and patting a still-fussing baby.
"Mac… Sarah?" Harm asks in confusion.
The woman looks up at him, "Harm, who's Mac?"
She doesn't give him a chance to respond before going on. "And Sarah's fine…"
she smiles at the baby in her arms. "She just missed her Daddy." She
lowers herself to the bed next to Harm.
He stares at her for a moment. "D—Dianne?" His
eyes go wide in shock.
"Harm?" Dianne begins, "What's wrong? You
look like you've just seen a ghost."
He doesn't answer her. He is in shock. He clearly
remembers staring down at her bloody body in Norfolk. He also clearly remembers
catching her killer and Mac… Mac stopping him from making the worst mistake of
his life. Then that kiss! Mac said that she knew that he was kissing Dianne…
she was only partly right. He was kissing Dianne goodbye in spirit, but he knew
damn well who he was kissing in the flesh.
"Harm?"
"Huh?" he looks at her.
"Are you okay?"
He shakes his head. "I—I had a strange dream,
Dianne. It was so real…."
She lays the baby between them and then lays down facing
him. "Do you wanna tell me about it?"
He starts to shake his head but thinks better of it, his
head clearing and the real world rushing back in. "You were dead; I got a
new partner after Meg transferred out of JAG. It was strange, she looked just
like you, and at our first meeting I thought I was seeing a ghost… except that
she was a Marine." He closes his eyes in remembrance, "Her name was
Sarah MacKenzie, but she insisted that everyone call her…"
"Mac?" Dianne interrupts.
"Yeah." Harm answers. "Anyway, over the
years she became my best friend, I trusted her with my life, and she trusted me
with hers. We had some bumps in the road, but we never lost our
friendship." He turns his head so that Dianne can't see the expression on
his face. The dream was so real to him that somewhere inside his brain, he still
believes that he was in love with Sarah MacKenzie and they were getting married,
and intended to fulfill that promise they made on the steps of JAG headquarters
after the birth of their godson.
"Harm?" Dianne asks, causing him to look at her.
She is startled to see the tears in his eyes. Cautiously, she reaches a hand out
to him. "What is it?"
"It was so real," he reiterates. "I—we,
that is Sarah and I, we were getting married when I woke up." He looks away
from his wife. "We'd been partners for 8 years, best friends for most of
that time, and eventually we fell in love. At first, I wasn't sure if my
feelings for Mac were real, or just because she looked like you. As time went
on, though, I realized that they were real." Harm looks back at Dianne; she
has tears in her eyes. "I—I didn't mean to hurt you, Dianne. It's only a
dream."
"But it isn't only a dream to you, Harm." Dianne
says, "I can see it in your eyes. You believed it was real… and it hurts
you to lose that." She pauses, "And it hurts me… not only to see you
hurting, but to think about you loving someone else."
"Now you sound like Jordie." Harm mumbles.
Dianne ignores his comment, "I know I wasn't the
first woman in your life, but I want to believe that I am the only woman
now."
Harm looks at her and smiles, "Dianne, I promise you’re
the only woman in my life… well, except for Sarah here." He gently lays a
hand on his daughter's stomach. He sighs then lets out a chuckle.
"What?"
"There's one good thing about it being just a
dream."
"What's that?"
"I was never involved with the Video Princess."
"Who?"
"Renee Peterson, she was a director of commercials.
She shot a recruiting commercial for the Navy… I was the star. I then made the
colossal mistake of dating her for over a year." He pauses. "She was
shallow, manipulative, and totally wrong for me."
"I'm glad." Dianne says before yawning.
"We'd better get to sleep, Commander. Tomorrow you meet your new partner…."
The end… now we just have to
wait for the TV movies.
Don't throw rocks please! I really am a shipper! I don't know
where this came from… probably my deep-seated bitterness at never getting to
see the "Newhart" series finale. It aired in the States when I was on
the base in Japan, and by the time it aired on the base, we'd already PCS'd
home.
On the other hand, it may have just come from my warped brain,
and I desperately need a visit from the nice young men in the white coats and a
large dose of Haldol.
Anyway, I hope the last episode begins like mine, but doesn't
end this way... and I hope it goes longer than season 9. <g>
