When to Begin Piano Lessons
Most children are ready to begin private piano lessons by the second grade. At this age most students are ready to work independently and are motivated by the joy of making music. Lessons can begin earlier, but by the time of the second grade a parent does not need to be concerned about whether the child is ready.
Parents must provide the expectation of regular practice. Music lessons are usually taken for a very long time. Lessons and practicing become a part of daily life. It is best to begin piano study during the elementary years, but it is still possible to play well with a later beginning.
A childs weekly progress at music lessons provides an opportunity to experience the achievement of long term goals a step at a time. In an age when many things are purchased and instant, the long term commitment of music lessons helps a child understand that some enjoyable things are achieved by his own efforts over a period of time. The process of learning and the students own efforts bring him satisfaction.
What to expect
The goal of lessons is steady development of musical skills and the ability to perform confidently with good musical style. All students need basic theory skills to be able to perform with excellence and continue growing musically. Students become proficient in major and minor scales, chord progressions, intervals etc. These skills are not learned as an isolated detail, but as part the the music they are performing. Piano students acquire basic skills at varying ages because of the big variation in the ages when they begin.
Students are encouraged to perform in school and community groups. Solo performance in recitals, community and church programs is desirable. Students are always working on solo literature as a part of their regular study.
Creative expression is encouraged through composition and improvisation. Composition is important because of the learning that occurs as a student uses his knowledge of music. Students use the computer in the music studio to create a printed version of their music after they have written and notated it on paper.
Students who have reached a level of development making it possible to play original works of composers prepare music representing each period of music. The student who is doing well can meet the basic requirements to major in music in college or to participate in college performance groups. No matter what the student intends to do with his ability to play, the ability to perform provides life long satisfaction.
