Piano as Early Beginning - Woodwind Students

Piano study started earlier than the woodwind instrument provides an excellent background for those whose later goal may be another instrument. Aural musical skills can be more easily accomplished in the years earlier than the fourth grade.

Piano study before the band or orchestra, gives the student time to acquire basic skills in note reading and rhythm. The piano offers the opportunity to learn both bass and treble clef reading skills. Also an understanding of harmony is easier on the piano than with a woodwind instrument that only has a single melody line. By the time a student begins a woodwind instrument in school, the student with early piano study should have developed fundamental musical understanding. He should be to be able to perform musically for his level of development.

A successful early start gives a student the advantage of having a strong self-image of himself as a musician. Students often opt to continue the piano because they are doing well and enjoy it. Students who are doing well in school usually have no trouble with two instruments, if they find music is an activity they enjoy. A student who has difficulty with school is probably better off with one instrument.
