A Later Beginning
Piano students begin lessons at mixed ages. They often begin very young, usually by the second grade, and continue through high school. Piano students often continue as adults. It is never too late to begin, but a more comfortable and thorough musical foundation is possible if the student begins in the elementary years of school. Some musical skills are acquired more easily when the student is younger. Also there are fewer conflicting activities which interfere with available practice time.
If a student plays well by the time he reaches junior high, the satisfaction of his accomplishment, maintains the students interest in music even though he has many other interests. If the student has not acquired the basic skills that allow him to play what he thinks is challenging music by the time of junior high, other interests are more likely to win most of his attention.
