When to Begin WoodwindsMost clarinet, flute and saxophone students begin in the fourth grade at the time they
begin instrumental music in school. It is best to begin private instruction at the same time as beginning in school before habits become established. Woodwind students do best if they are in the schools group lessons as well as private instruction. Most students take lessons throughout their school years until graduation. If a student wants to begin learning about music before he has reached the physical maturity necessary for a woodwind instrument, starting earlier on the piano is an excellent choice.
What to expect
In private music instruction solo literature is prepared for performance by the student and is accompanied by the teacher at the piano. The goal of lessons is steady development of musical skills and performing confidently with good musical style. Basic theory requirements are part of regular lessons for all students. The average good student would know all the major scales, for example, by the eighth grade. Some accomplish this earlier. All students who wish to perform with excellence and continue growing musically need basic theory skills.
The student who is doing well can meet the basic requirements to major in music in college or to participate in college performance groups. The ability to perform provides life long satisfaction.
Students are encouraged to perform in school and community groups. Solo performance in recitals, community and church programs is desirable. Students are always working on solo literature as a part of their regular study.
Students receive assistance with their band or orchestra music, if the student requests it and additional help seems to be needed. Some students choose to work on district band and orchestra competition music. Good students often enjoy the challenge and the experience of performing with others who are the select students from other schools.
Creative expression is encouraged through composition and improvisation. The students own unique creation is worthwhile because of the learning that occurs as a student uses what he knows about music. Students use the computer in the music studio to create a printed version of their music after they have written and notated it on paper.
