CANCEL

This verb is used to cancel an offer to another player after you have extended it (using the GIVE verb.) The offer may not be canceled after the other player has already ACCEPTed or DECLINEd it.

Offer cancelled. Eratika has cancelled the offer.

CAST (NOTE: Whatever kind of targeted spell is prepped, using CAST, by itself, will by default have you cast that targeted spell on yourself.)

Note that a spell must be prepared before it may be cast, using the PREPARE verb.

Also see ATTACK for reference to special Voln messages which may occur when one successfully kills undead critters by AMBUSHing, ATTACKing, CASTing, FIREing, HURLing, MSTRIKEing or TRIPing)

>cast
You gesture.
A silvery luminescence surrounds you.

NOTE: Armor hindrance is always a risk factor when casting. Recent changes may have affected the chances at which your armor may prevent the spell cast from working correctly. Those who are undertrained in Armor Use will find their chances for armor hindrance have increased, and those who are overtrained may find their chances for spell casting failure have decreased. For more specific information, visit Amerlise's Chambers, at http://www.liquidfish.net
/Amerlise/frames.htm(See also Simu’s Armor Use)

For example, Aelphaba, a ranger with a 39/138 training in Armor, is wearing brigandine and thus she has reached her armor's base hindrance of 7% because of her overtraining.  As Amerlise explains, "7% is the new base spirit hindrance for brig (ranger spells count as spirit for hindrance purposes). This means that you technically need 140 in armor use to fully train away the spell hindrance.  Most armors have a different requirement for magical training as opposed to physical RT training. The way the formula works, though, it rounds up at half-multiples of 20 (i.e. 90, 110, 130, 150, etc), and you only need to train away all but one percentage of hindrance, so you are 'fully trained' for brig's spirit
hindrance at 110 armor use (or 111, as close as you can get to 110).  You can never train your hindrance to BELOW the base, only down to it; [note that] the base hindrances on most armors have been lowered slightly":

>You gesture.

(Spell Hindrance for some forest green brigandine is 7% with current Armor Use skill, d100= 6)

Your armor prevents the spell from working correctly.

Hannal gestures.
A silvery luminescence surrounds Hannal.

Aelphaba gestures.

(The spell is not released; the armor prevented it from being cast correctly)

CAST AT <CRITTER or ITEM or PERSON>

(By casting AT your target, you are targeting something specific in the room and thus avoiding -- in most cases -- any misfires. Note, however, that due to recent coding changes, the parser now first searches for a critter, then an object and THEN people. The GOOD NEWS about the coding change: While you are hunting critters, this change will help you avoid mistakenly casting an offensive spell against an individual who has a name similar to the critter you were targeting. THE BAD NEWS about the coding change: While you are spelling up another individual or trying to raise someone, etc., this change has added some unexpected quirks, including misfires, of which you should be aware. You must keep in mind that if you are casting a spell at a person, you may end up instead casting a defense spell upon a critter, or casting a misfire (and loss of mana) at an item you are wearing or carrying in an open container, or even an item in the room. In other words, the abbreviation for your targeted person must not match an abbreviation for (a) a critter in your room, (b) an item you are wearing or carrying in an open container OR (c) an item in your room, or you will not be able to cast a spell at your targeted person.)

Also see ATTACK for reference to special Voln messages which may occur when one successfully kills undead critters by AMBUSHing, ATTACKing, CASTing, FIREing, HURLing, MSTRIKEing or TRIPing)

(1) TARGETED PERSON IS IN THE ROOM WITH YOU:

(a)Your targeted person is in the room and no critter and no item matches the abbreviation you gave to your target :
>cast at Eratika
You gesture at Eratika.
Eratika looks considerably more imposing.

(b) But watch for: Your targeted person is in the room and an item you are wearing (or in an open container) matches the abbreviation you gave to your target (in this situation, the targeted person is a dead Banduras):
>prep 318
You concentrate on the Life Restoration spell...Your spell is ready.
>cast at band
You gesture at a stunning gold wedding band embellished with two sparkling rubies nestled together.  The incredible amount of magical energy you have called upon explodes in the air above you.  The backwash of pure spiritual energy overwhelms your senses! You are stunned!
Cast Roundtime 3 Seconds.
Eep! A bad misfire which stuns the cleric! Before the coding change, you automatically would have cast the Life Restoration spell upon the dead Banduras, but the parser now searches for a matching item or critter before it searches for a person. To get around this new risk of misfiring (and resulting loss of mana), you will now have to type out Banduras' name with more letters to distinguish it from an item such as a wedding band:
>prep 318
You concentrate on the Life Restoration spell...
Your spell is ready.
>cast at bandu
You gesture at Banduras.
Roundtime: 40 sec.
A brilliant glow forms around Banduras, lingers for a moment, then fades.
Your surroundings grow dim...you lapse into a state of awareness only, unable to do anything...
Cast Roundtime 3 Seconds.

(c) And watch for: Your targeted person is in the room and a critter in the same room matches the abbreviation you gave to your target (in this situation, the targeted person is Kobsta, who is in the room with you and a kobold):
>prep 103
You concentrate on the Spirit Defense spell...
Your spell is ready.
>cast at kob
You gesture at a kobold.
A kobold suddenly looks more powerful.Cast Roundtime 3 Seconds.
Again, to avoid spelling up a critter whose name is similar to your targeted person, you will now have to type out Kobsta's name with more letters to distinguish it from a critter such as a kobold:
>prep 103
You concentrate on the Spirit Defense spell...
Your spell is ready.
>cast at kobsta
You gesture at Kobsta.
Kobsta suddenly feels more powerful.
Cast Roundtime 3 Seconds.

(d) Note that in some very special situations, you'll find yourself unable to cast a spell upon the targeted person! For example, one cleric tried to raise a dead Was in a room with a wastebasket. No matter what the cleric tried to do, she could not target Was, only the wastebasket. In this special situation, you would have to add a space after Was, which will allow you to fool the parser. In other words:
>prep 318
You concentrate on the Life Restoration spell...
Your spell is ready.
>cast at was[type an extra space here]
You gesture at Was.
Roundtime: 40 sec.
A brilliant glow forms around Was, lingers for a moment, then fades.
Your surroundings grow dim...you lapse into a state of awareness only, unable to do anything...
Cast Roundtime 3 Seconds.

(2) TARGETED PERSON IS NOT IN THE ROOM WITH YOU:

Your targeted person just left the room and no critter and no item matches the abbreviation you gave to your target :
>prep 103
You concentrate on the Spirit Defense spell...
Your spell is ready.
Eratika just went south.
>cast at Eratika
Cast at what?
(So even if Eratika is in the lands, there is no misfire and no mana loss, since the word "AT" was used, PROVIDED that the abbreviation for your target does not match an abbreviation for (a) a critter in your room, (b) an item you are wearing or carrying in an open container OR (c) an item in your room. If there is a match to any of these possibilities, you will get the quirky results as explained in examples (1)(b) and (1)(c) above.)

(3) TARGETED CRITTER IS IN THE ROOM WITH YOU:

(a) The critter is in the room with you, and no items nor people in the room match your abbreviation for the critter:
>cast rolt
You gesture at a rolton.
You hurl a stream of fire at a rolton!
AS: +45 vs DS: +0 with AvD: +51 + d100 roll: +66 = +162
... and hit for 101 points of damage!
Flame engulfs back: a rolton flambe!
The rolton collapses to the ground, emits a final bleat and dies.

(b) Note that even if the abbreviation for your targeted critter is similar to the name of an individual who is in the room with you, the new parser change now ensures -- in this particular kind of situation -- that the offensive spell intended for the critter is cast at the critter instead of mistakenly at a player (in this situation, Kobsta is in the room with you and a kobold):
>cast at kob
You gesture at a kobold.
CS: +280 - TD: +3 + CvA: +20 + d100: +21 == +318
Warding failed!
Its eyes cloud over, becoming a milky blue.
Cast Roundtime 3 Seconds.

(4) TARGETED CRITTER IS NOT IN THE ROOM WITH YOU:

Assuming that the abbreviation your gave to your targeted critter does not match any item or person in the room with you, the use of cast AT critter will prevent you from having a miscast. This is true even if someone is in the lands who has a name which matches your critter's abbreviation. You do not lose mana and you may use your still- prepped spell to cast at a new target or you may release the spell.
>prep 311
You concentrate on the Blinding spell...
Your spell is ready.
A velnalin trots south.
>cast at vel
Cast at what?
>find vel

CAST <CRITTER or ITEM or PERSON>

(Note: By not using "AT" as in CAST AT <TARGET>, you are risking a misfire should your targeted person leave the room, because you are not directly targeting within the room (this risk is in addition to the risk that the abbreviation for your target person matches an abbreviation for (a) an item you are wearing or carrying in an open container OR (b) an item in the room. Generally, you do not risk a misfire targeting critters, but you still have the risk that the abbreviation for your target critter matches an abbreviation for an item you are wearing or carrying in an open container.)

(1) TARGETED PERSON IS IN THE ROOM WITH YOU:

Your targeted person is in the room and no critter and no item matches the abbreviation you gave to your targeted person:
>prep 305
You concentrate on the Preservation spell...
Your spell is ready.
>cast bandu
You gesture at Banduras.
A luminescent web briefly forms around Banduras, then fades into the body.
Cast Roundtime 3 Seconds.

(2) TARGETED PERSON IS NOT IN THE ROOM WITH YOU:

(a) Your targeted person just left the room and no critter and no item matches the abbreviation you gave to your target :
>prep 103
You concentrate on the Spirit Defense spell......
Your spell is ready.
Banduras just went south.
>cast bandu
You gesture into the air.
Your spell misfires.
Cast Roundtime 3 Seconds.
Note that you can avoid misfires in this situation by typing CAST AT BANDU instead of CAST BANDU.

(b) Note an exception to this rule:  For the Locate Person spell to work appropriately, you must type CAST <PERSON> and not CAST AT <PERSON>.  Which makes sense, since the person is not in the room with you:
>prep 116
You concentrate on the Locate Person spell...
Your spell is ready.
>cast bandu
You gesture into the air.
Your vision begins to become murky and clouded. You have a sensation of rapidly passing distance. Eventually your sight begins to clear and a vision of Banduras's surroundings fills your mind...

[Dancing Daisy Table]
Suspended from the ceiling is a mirrored planter box. Dozens of daisies -- yellow, white, light purple -- crowd the box and sway gently as though dancing in the air.
Also in the room: Banduras
Obvious exits: out.
Cast Roundtime 3 Seconds.

BUT if you type CAST AT, the spell remains prepped:
>prep 116
You concentrate on the Locate Person spell...
Your spell is ready.
>cast at bandu
Cast at what?

(3)TARGETED CRITTER IS IN THE ROOM WITH YOU:

If the critter is in the room, you will see something like this (it doesn't matter if an item or person has a matching name, as the critter is chosen first by the parser):

(4) TARGETED CRITTER IS NOT IN THE ROOM WITH YOU:

If the critter is NOT in the room, AND no item matches your target's abbreviation, then CAST <CRITTER> results in your spell remaining prepped and ready to be recast at another target or released (Note that due to the parser code change, it no longer matters whether an individual in the lands has a name which matches your target critter's abbreviation; you will no longer get a misfire so long as no item matches the abbreviation):

(a) Abbreviation for critter which matches someone's name:
>prep 311
You concentrate on the Blinding spell...
Your spell is ready.
A kobold hurries north.
>cast kob
Cast at what?
>find kob
Brave Adventurer Questing:

(b) Abbreviation for critter which does not match someone's name:
>prep 311

>cast veln

>find veln
There are no adventurers questing that match the names specified.

CHANNEL <#> <PERSON> or SEND <#> <PERSON> (when your combined mana share is bad)

This verb is used to share mana between individuals. The more trained both individuals are in mana share, the less mana is likely to be lost during the transaction.

You face Trakkar, close your eyes and begin chanting. A small spark leaps from your fingers... but little else happens.

Eratika faces you, closes her eyes and begins chanting. A small spark leaps from Eratika's fingers... but little else happens.

CHANNEL <#> <PERSON> or SEND <#> <PERSON> (when your combined mana share is good)

>channel 20 hannal

You face Hannal, close your eyes and begin chanting. Suddenly, a small bolt of energy arcs between the two of you. You awaken, feeling slightly drained, but satisfied that 20 points were successfully transferred to Hannal.

Kelista faces you, closes her eyes and begins chanting. Suddenly, a small bolt of energy arcs between the two of you. You gain 20 mana points!

CHARGE (by wizards only)

Note that this isn’t really a verb per se, but rather a special spell, #517, the Charge Item spell.  It is a complicated process, however, and that is why you find information on it here.

(Before proceeding, a wizard must have a talented bard sing to a valuable gem such as a diamond or ruby to make sure the gem is "pure." Once the gem is considered ready, the wizard then pours a grot t'kel potion on the gem to further prepare it for becoming an blue orb, which in turn will increase the charges in the targeted item. See POUR POTION ON MY <GEM>. The wizard will need a LOT of mana, especially if he or she is charging ruby amulets, which have wall of force charges in them.)

Note that a wizard may suffer from failures when rubbing the orb or casting at it. With rubbing, failures can range from destroying the targeted item and getting hurt, losing all mana, or simply being forced to "try again." With casting at the orb, failures range from having the orb shrink or even imploding the orb into oblivion!

(Successful Orb and Charging, edited for length):

>prep 517
You concentrate on the Charge Item spell...
Your spell is ready.

>cast my emerald
You gesture at an emerald.

This verb gives you access to the balance of your bank account. It must be used inside your bank at the teller window.

The teller thumbs through the books and says, "Your balance is currently at 1217737 silvers. Is there anything else I can do for you today?"

Eratika has a quiet word with the teller.

CHECK IN (at front desk of inns; you will find yourself in the Character Manager for training, rerolling, or information about your character, such as your complexion, eye and hair color; you will also receive information on your trained skills)

With weapon and shield out, you cannot check into an inn:

With weapon and shield put away, you can check in:

>check in
You get a room key from the innkeeper (who promptly records this on your tab) and you wander off to your room...

Then as you leave …

Leaving your room, you check back out of the Raging Thrak Inn, wander over to the front desk and hand the room key back to the innkeeper. She nods and thanks you for your patronage.
