FIDGET

You fidget.

Eratika fidgets.

FIRE
(NOTE: this verb is used when hunting with a BOW (short bow, composite bow, or long bow) or a CROSSBOW (light crossbow or heavy crossbow). Their uses are slightly different, however, each require use of the LEFT hand for
the weapon, instead of the right, as melee weapons do. Also see ATTACK for reference to special Voln messages which may occur when one successfully kills undead critters by AMBUSHing, ATTACKing, CASTing, FIREing, HURLing, MSTRIKEing or TRIPing)

Bows -

Firing the bow also includes loading (or nocking) the arrow as one command (see GET), however you must be holding the arrow in the right hand for this to work. Place your bow in the left hand, the arrow in the right, and FIRE MY BOW AT <CRITTER>. Note that using short bows instead long bows will shorten the round time but the damage inflicted will not be as great. The behavior of composite bows falls somewhere in between that of short bows and long bows.

Crossbows -

Crossbows require first cocking the weapon and then loading it with a bolt. Heavy crossbows require heavy bolts, and light crossbows require light bolts. Hold the crossbow in the left hand and COCK the weapon. Then get a bolt, and LOAD the crossbow. You may then FIRE MY CROSSBOW AT <CRITTER>. Crossbows have an added benefit of providing a +50 attack strength if the shooter is kneeling. Also note that using light crossbows instead heavy crossbows will shorten the round time, but the damage inflicted will not be as great.

>fire bow at kobold

AS: +83 vs DS: +10 with AvD: +25 + d100 roll: +49 = +147
... and hit for 39 points of damage!
Strike to abdomen punctures stomach!
The kobold crumples to a heap on the ground and dies.
Round time: 8 sec.

Using a crossbow:

>cock crossbow
You cock your heavy crossbow.
Round time: 8 sec.
>get 1 bolt

... and hit for 17 points of damage!

Round time: 2 sec.

Kneeling after loading your crossbow with a bolt; note the difference in AS:

>fire cross at kob

AS: +133 vs DS: +10 with AvD: +30 + d100 roll: +94 = +247

FORAGE <HERB> (NOTE: Every time you forage you receive an open 1d100 roll. The result is compared to an hidden threshold, which varies according to the kind of herb you desire. You will successfully forage if you roll over the threshold AND you are in a room where the herb can be found.  Many factors exist which can raise or lower the success threshold: (1) kneeling lowers the threshold; (2) one empty hand lowers the threshold some, two empty hands even more; (3) hand scars will raise the threshold; (4) the rangers' forage spell will lower the threshold; (5) the more trainings you've had (birthdays), the lower the threshold; (6) rangers have the lowest thresholds, wizards and sorcerers the highest; and (7) the area where you can find an herb may be less than perfect for that herb, thus raising the threshold. Note that if your left hand is not free while foraging, the herb will be left on the ground.  Also note that while foraging produces one-bite herbs, the spell "Herb Production" appears to produce herbs with two to four bites.)

According to Antalya, the following message means that the herb your are attempting to forage IS present in the room: You forage around but find nothing.

>forage yabathilium
d100(Open): 34
You carefully forage around and manage to find a yabathilium fruit!
Round time: 6 sec.

The following message means that the herb IS present in the room, but the room is depleted: As you forage around you notice that someone has been foraging here recently and you are unable to find anything useful.

The following two messages means that the herb IS NOT present in the room.

You forage around but find nothing of interest.

As you carefully forage around you can find no hint of what you are looking for. You are not even sure it could be found here.

The following messages can be seen whether the herb is present or not (your rolls are bad or you are unskilled in foraging):

You stumble about in a fruitless attempt at foraging.

You clumsily forage around and find nothing.

You fumble about so badly on your unsuccessful search that you can only hope no one was watching you.

You begin to forage around when suddenly you feel a burning sensation in your hand.

Also note that some of the herbs are rather difficult to spell. You can type "shift herb" which will result in showing you the following list (showing old names and current names of various herbs):
