IMBED
(performed by wizards, sorcerors, bards and anyone else able to learn Spell 420, Magic Item Creation; any spell the imbedder knows may be imbedded into the magic item, and the resulting amount of charges depends on the spell to be imbedded and the amount of maximum mana the magic item is able to hold; see POUR POTION ON <MAGIC ITEM. Bloodsnake's tips: a) Imbedding in a workshop improves your chances of success; b) Never put aimed offensive spells in anything other than a rod or wand, lest you rub it, and self-cast it. Painful!; c) Be mindful that with every imbedding attempt you run the risk of destroying the object. If you are imbedding an item for someone make sure they know the risk of the item being ruined and agree to not hold you responsible if that should happen; and d) The higher the level of the spell, the higher the chance of failure.)

To determine whether an item is imbeddable, first cast spell #405 at the item, noting the results (the following is based upon the Coven Guide to Imbedding): 1) Chaotic patterns indicate it is either not imbeddable or requires a grot t'kel potion; 2) If you sense that this is a magical item but there seems to be no spells in it, it is imbeddable but will require a grot t'kel potion; 3) If you get the message "You sense that this is a magical item. There seem to be no spells or charges but the flows of essence are strangely attracted to it.", then it is imbeddable without a potion; and 4) If the item is already imbedded and simply out of charges, the item is empty, and (a) is rechargable; (b) it requires a grot potion to make it reimbeddable (most often the case with merchant imbeddables) or (c) it is completely used up, at which time, you can regard it as junk.

Here is an example showing what can result after casting Elemental Detection at a magic item:
>prep 405
You concentrate on the Elemental Detection spell...
Your spell is ready.
>cast rod
You gesture at a twisted rod.
You sense that this is a magical item. There seem to be no spells or charges but the flows of essence are strangely attracted to it.
Cast Roundtime 3 Seconds.
(The above item is ready to be imbedded with a spell)

NOTE on Reimbedding an ITEM: If you do not know for sure that the item is an reimbeddable item, you lick the item. If it tastes bitter then the item is "crumbly" and thus it is not reimbeddable because it disintegrates on its last use. If the item tastes metallic, it may be reimbeddable (and when empty, it will require a grot t'kel potion to prepare it for reimbedding). The next item is a reimbeddable item:
>prep 405
You concentrate on the Elemental Detection spell...
Your spell is ready.
>Cast pin
You gesture at a precarious pelican pin.
You sense that the pin is a magic item that holds the spell "Blur" with no charges in it.
Cast Roundtime 3 Seconds.
(The above item requires a grot t'kel potion before it can be reimbedded with charges of Blur)

Once you've determined that the magic item is imbeddable (for example, the grot potion added flows of essence to it), you cast the Magic Item Creation spell (420) and then quickly type:

Imbed (spell #) in (object -- note: MY will not work) using (rub/wave/raise/tap) for (# of charges) charges.

Here is an example of a successful imbedding:
>prep 420
You concentrate on the Magic Item Creation spell...
Your spell is ready.
>cast my wand
You gesture at a granite wand.
A fiery red thread grows between you and the wand. It glows brilliantly for a moment and then fades into invisibility but you still feel attuned to the wand.
Cast Roundtime 3 Seconds.

>imbed 506 in wand using wave for 15 charges

You concentrate on funneling your power into the wand.
You manage to successfully place 6 charges of the Haste I when it begins to overheat, so you stop.

Here are three examples of what can go wrong when imbedding:

(1) Requesting too much mana
>imbed 509 in pin using rub for 10 charges

Something goes wrong with the process and you feel your power rush away from you.
Although it is a good idea to "overshoot" the amount of mana you think the item can hold (so that you don't "undercharge" the item), this attempt to imbed is requesting way too much mana, and so the process went wrong.

Here is a better amount of mana to request:

>imbed 509 in pin using rub for 6 charges

You concentrate on funneling your power into the pin.
You manage to successfully place 4 charges of the Strength when it begins to overheat, so you stop.

(2) Casting magic item creation spell without first pouring grot k'tel potion on the empty reimbeddable:

>prep 405
You concentrate on the Elemental Detection spell...
Your spell is ready.
>cast earring
You gesture at some polished white pearl earrings.
You sense that the earrings is a magic item that holds the spell "Haste I" with no charges in it.
Cast Roundtime 3 Seconds.

>prep 420
You concentrate on the Magic Item Creation spell...
Your spell is ready.
>cast my earring
You gesture at some polished white pearl earrings.
Your spell misfires.
Cast Roundtime 3 Seconds.
The spell misfired because you first need to pour grot potion onto the earrings before casting the Magic Item Creation spell.

(3) Adding "MY" into the IMBED formula:

>imbed 503 in my pin using rub for 10 charges

You are not mentally prepared to imbed a spell in that.

Here is the right way (by removing the word "MY"):

>imbed 503 in pin using rub for 10 charges

You concentrate on funneling your power into the pin.
You feel that you have successfully placed 10 charges of the Blur spell into it.

INFUSE <AMOUNT of MANA>

(Note: You can add mana to a mana pool or realm pool with the command INFUSE <AMOUNT>, where <AMOUNT> equals the total number of mana points you wish to infuse.)

NOTE: For an excellent guide to ENCHANTing, please visit Khait's site, at:
http://members.
aol.com/KathCT/
enchantguide.htm

(Note that you need training in mana share for the mana to actually be usable by someone)

>Infuse 50
You release 50 mana into the surrounding area.

Khait says, "There are two things to be aware of when calculating exactly how much mana you are infusing into the pool.

The first is that your mana share skill affects the amount that you infuse, if you are undertrained. If you are less than fully trained (with 102 skill) in mana share, then the amount of your mana that makes it to the pool is reduced. If you are overtrained in mana share skill, there is no longer any corresponding benefit - the infusing system treats your share percentage as 100% whether you have a 102 or a 300 in mana share skill.

The second thing to be aware of is that due to a change in recent years, only half of the amount you are able to infuse will actually make it to the pool. Here is a formula you can use to determine how much of your infused mana can be "counted" as making it into the pool:

Actual Infused Amount = 1/2 * [Infused Amount * (the lesser of Mana Share Skill/100 OR 1.0)]
