PLAY <INSTRUMENT> <STYLE>

The classes of instruments are:

(1) "Woodwinds"
 (flutes, piccolos, fifes, pan flutes; pan flutes are no longer sold);

(2) "Horns" (cornets, lysards, crumhorns shawms; all are made of wood, not brass);

(3) "Necked Stringed" (mandolins, lutes, theorbos, citterns);

Valid Styles: Joyful, Mournful, Soft, Fast, Slow, Intense, Jaunty, Flamboyant, Aimless, Somber, Inspiring.

(Not all styles are available for all instruments, for example, while all styles are available for woodwind instruments such as flutes and necked stringed instruments such as mandolins, percussion instruments such as finger cymbals and tambourines can play only in the fast, slow and soft styles)

Sample messages (Two of several possible messages, which depend not only on the style chosen, but also on both the skill level of player and the kind of instrument played):

>play flute joy
With a sunny smile, you lift your flute and strike up a lilting tune.

>play mandolin inspiring
With a complex series of chords you bridge into a new key, taking the theme to a new level of exaltation.

Sample messages demonstrating that not all styles are valid for all classes of instruments:

>play cymbal joyful

PLAY SKILL
(to check your skill with playing an instrument; you will have one of four different ratings, or no rating at all if you've never played an instrument in that instrument class. The four skill ratings from beginning level to advanced -- for bards only -- are Novice (ranks 1-5), Apprentice (6-13), Journeyman (14-19) and Adept (20). Non-bards will never be able to achieve the Journeyman or Adept ratings. According to a formula involving the 20 ranks and the corresponding scripts, that means that while a bard can get up to 11 scripts per Play Style category (as an Adept), a non-bard can get up to 7 of the possible 11 scripts per Play Style category (as a maxed out Apprentice).

Your current skill level in woodwind instruments is Apprentice.

Your current skill level in necked stringed instruments is Journeyman.

Note that if you feel "a sense of accomplishment" while playing your instrument, that means that you have moved up one rank (1 of 20 possible ranks for bards, 1 of 13 for non-bards) in your instrument's class. Moreover, when you feel a sense of accomplishment for the sixth time within an instrument class, that means that you moved up from the Novice skill rating to the Apprentice skill rating.

Also note that just playing your instrument and not hunting or doing anything else to get experience will bring you to a stand-still in your training.

POUR POTION ON MY <ARMOR, WEAPON, SHIELD> (for enchanting by wizards)

NOTE: As Khait notes, "Newflash: As of March 30, 2001, mages are having difficulty with the tempering of items for enchanting. Tempering potions can no longer be purchased - the Wehnimer's Landing Alchemist Shop has burned to the ground, sisfu potion is no longer for sale on Teras, and the alchemists in Solhaven and the Caravansary are out of stock. Furthermore, mages are encountering a high failure rate when trying to pour potions they purchased previously. No one is sure if this is a temporary situation, or preparation for a new enchanting system to be rolled out. Check the Wizard folder on the Official Simutronics message board to keep up to date on the situation."

(NOTE:  Wizards have a choice of using one of five possible potions for tempering the item for the purpose of future enchantment. The potions, ranging in order from the least expensive -- with no bonus for success -- to the most expensive with the most bonus for success: rohnuru, duqnuru, dirtokh, mirtokh & sisfu.)
