YOUR ACTION FROM YOUR OWN PERSPECTIVE

YOUR ACTION AS VIEWED BY OTHERS

SACRIFICE <ANY CRITTER or ITEM or PERSON or YOURSELF> (by non-sorcerers AND by sorcerers who have not yet been taught how to SACRIFICE by a fellow sorcerer. See SACRIFICE TEACH <PERSON>) >sacrifice rolton

You focus your thoughts and try to concentrate. A brief, dark image flickers on the edge of your consciousness and you lose your concentration with an involuntary shiver.

Eratika appears to be trying to concentrate when suddenly her eyes widen and she twitches with a quick shiver.

SACRIFICE <ITEM> (by sorcerers only) You glare coldly at the box but it appears unfazed. Akane glares coldly at an enruned mithril box.
SACRIFICE <LIVE CRITTER> (by sorcerers only)

Note that the sorcerer must first stun and injure the live critter, or the sacrifice will not work at all. Given that the critter is injured and is also stunned (by a mind jolt spell, for example, or bound or webbed by a friend), there is still a chance that the sorcerer's attempt to sacrifice the critter may fail.

If the sacrifice is successful, the sorcerer will absorb the life force of the critter and turn it into mana for his or her own use. There is a risk involved in exchange for attempting to sacrifice a critter: The sorcerer will lose a small amount of his or her own life force. A successful sacrifice will cost a sorcerer usually 2 spirit points, and a failed attempt will cost usually 1 spirit point.

There is another yet another risk with a successful sacrifice.  The sorcerer may end up with too much mana in his or her head, causing the sorcerer to suffer severe injuries and lengthy stun periods.

Once a sacrifice is successful, the sorcerer will not be able to successfully sacrifice again until approximately 20 minutes have passed.

Also, the closer the critter is to the sorcerer's age, the more spirit he or she will need. In other words, a critter which is the same level as the sorcerer will require that the sorcerer have full spirit for the sacrifice to work. With younger critters, a sorcerer can successfully sacrifice critters with 7 or less spirit points. The number of points is approximate, depending on both the level difference of the critter and the sorcerer, as well as the sorcerer's total amount of possible spirit.

Also, an attempt to sacrifice an undead critter will never work; see SACRIFICE <UNDEAD CRITTER> below.

Once the critter is injured and stunned, the sorcerer may attempt to sacrifice the critter:

>sacrifice cockatrice

You focus your inner thoughts, channeling a part of your spirit as you initiate a link with the cockatrice.
You feel drained!

Steeling your thoughts, you begin to draw energy from your victim.  The cockatrice contorts in agony, its mouth open in a silent scream!

Your senses tingle, then become awash in a flood of power as the life leaves your hapless foe!

The cockatrice falls to the ground motionless.
You feel 21 mana surge into you!
Roundtime: 10 sec.

Note that if a sorcerer attempts to sacrifice that same critter (which is now dead) yet again, this happens:

>sacrifice cockatrice

You glare at the dead cockatrice with cold satisfaction, smirking faintly.

Here is a failed sacrifice with a stunned and injured live critter approximately at or below the sorcerer's own level:

>sacrifice warfarer

You focus your inner thoughts, channeling a part of your spirit as you initiate a link with the krolvin warfarer. You struggle to control the link, but it dissipates with no effect.

You feel drained!
Roundtime: 10 sec.

Here is a failed sacrifice with a stunned and injured live critter which is at least approximately 5 levels above a sorcerer's own level:

>sacrifice warfarer

You focus your inner thoughts, channeling a part of your spirit as you initiate a link with the krolvin Warfarer. You struggle to control the link, but something goes very awry!

Losing control of the link, you scream in agony as your own lifeforce is wrenched away!

You feel drained!
Roundtime: 10 sec.

Agenais appears to be in deep concentration as she stares at a cockatrice.

Agenais looks drained!

The cockatrice contorts in agony, its mouth open in a silent scream!

The cockatrice falls to the ground motionless.

Agenais glares at a dead cockatrice with a dark glint in her eyes, smirking faintly.

Agenais appears to be in deep concentration as she stares at a krolvin warfarer. A moment later she blinks quickly and breaks her gaze away from the warfarer, hissing.

Agenais looks drained!

Akane appears to be in deep concentration as she stares at a Krolvin warfarer. She suddenly screams in surprise and agony!

Akane looks drained!

SACRIFICE <PERSON> (by sorcerers only) Note that although I volunteered to be sacrificed (and Agenais happily obliged) -- complete with the prerequisite stun and maiming -- Agenais was unable to sacrifice me no matter how hard she tried. Heh!:

You glare at Eratika, dark thoughts of malice and pain tightening your lips into a cool sneer.

Agenais glares at you with a murderous glint in her eyes, her lips tightening into a cool sneer.

SACRIFICE <UNDEAD CRITTER> (by sorcerers only)

An explanatory comment by GM Warden:

"Here in GemStone we have Spirit, which correlates to a player's life force. This is the same as animus, and it is what makes living things "alive". Creatures that are not alive are not affected by Sacrifice.

While we do refer to souls at various places in GemStone, and they are related to the concept of sentience, these are not the same as life force. Animus might be considered to be the thread that ties life to a body. If a player dies, their thread has been cut, but they can be raised from the dead. In that vein, clerics do not transfer their souls to other players when raising the dead, they transfer a part of their life force/animus, restoring the dead player's thread.

Sorcerers have the opposite side of the necromancy coin: rather than giving of themselves, sorcerers are creating a link to the victim's animus (which drains the sorcerer slightly), then tapping off the victim's life force until the victim's thread breaks and death occurs.

That was my intent when I was creating the ability, at any rate. My personal opinion is that Sacrifice has no effect on souls. Killing a minotaur with Sacrifice will not preclude a minotaur magi from resurrecting the dead minotaur. If you choose to RP it differently, that's up to you.

As for reducing the time between uses, I do not plan to do so. This is intended to be a nice feature, but not something used constantly. I also consider the recovery time to be associated with the successful initiation of the spiritual link, which costs the sorcerer the same regardless of target's level."

>sacrifice dirge

You focus your inner thoughts, channeling a part of your spirit as you try to initiate a link with the death dirge. You are unable to complete the link.

You feel drained!
Roundtime: 10 sec.

(Note that although an attempt to sacrifice an undead critter is doomed to fail, the sorcerer will still lose some of his or her own life force, usually a single spirit point.)

Agenais appears to be in deep concentration as she stares at a death dirge. A moment later she blinks quickly and breaks her gaze away from the dirge, hissing.

Agenais looks drained!

SACRIFICE <YOURSELF> (by sorcerers only) You glare, dark thoughts of malice tightening your lips into a cool sneer. Akane glares darkly, a murderous glint in her eyes as her lips tighten into a cool sneer.
SACRIFICE TEACH <PERSON> (by sorcerers only)

(Note that a sorcerer cannot learn SACRIFICE from a learned sorcerer until he or she has 6 ranks in the Sorcerer Circle.)

>Sacrifice teach Akane

You take Akane to the side and begin to instruct her in the necromantic method that was once taught to you. You explain the secrets of focusing one's will on the victim's animus, and how the student may supply a small amount of her own spirit to initiate a link with the victim.

You go on to teach Akane how to control the spiritual link once it is created, and the secrets of overcoming and dominating the victim, including using physical and mental pain to cause a victim's will to weaken. You complete the lesson with
instructions on drawing the dominated victim's animus from its body in the form of mystical energy.
You feel drained!

Note that if you are a learned sorcerer attempting to teach another sorcerer who has already learned sacrifice, this happens:

>sacrifice teach Phantazmagoriia

You pull Phantazmagoriia to the side, and after a brief discussion you realize that he already understands this aspect of the dark arts.

If you are a learned sorcerer attempting to teach a non-sorcerer, you will see this:

>sacrifice teach Wormdoc

You quickly realize that with her lack of experience in the sorcerous arts, Wormdoc wouldn't be able to comprehend your lesson.

Agenais takes you to the side and begins to instruct you in a necromantic discipline previously unknown to you!  She explains the secrets of focusing one's will on a victim's animus, and how you may supply a small amount of your own spirit to initiate a link with the victim.

She goes on to teach you how to control the spiritual link once it is initiated, and the secrets of overcoming and dominating the victim, including using physical and mental pain to cause a victim's will to weaken. Agenais completes the lesson with Instructions on drawing the dominated victim's animus from its body in the form of mystical energy!

You carefully note the methods that she teaches you in this dark art.

NOTE: A third party will see this when a sorcerer teaches SACRIFICE to another sorcerer:

Agenais pulls Akane to the side for a brief discussion.
Agenais looks drained!

Agenais pulls you to the side for a moment to offer instruction in the dark art of sacrificing a victim's animus and converting it into mana. Learning that you are already knowledgeable in that area, she nods curtly with approval.

Agenais looks like she was about to say something to you, but she hesitates, obviously having changed her mind.

SING STATUS (bards only)

Have you ever wondered which spellsongs you had running, or how close you were to renewing them?  Wonder no more!  Now it is possible to find out by using SING STATUS.

Note that the messaging will refer to a “medley” if you are singing more than one song, and simply “song” if you are singing only one song.

>sing status

You are currently singing:

Song of Protection
Kai's Triumphant Song
Sonic Shield Song
Song of Valor

Your medley has recently renewed, and it will be quite some time before the effects fade.

 - OR -

Your song magic remains strong.  It will be a few minutes before your medley renews.

SKIN <CRITTER> (WITH <WEAPON>)

(NOTE: If no weapon is specified, it will default to the weapon held in your right hand.  According to Aelphaba, if you are going to use a skinning weapon, in most cases any edged weapon is going to be better than any blunt weapon, and a smaller weapon will be better than a larger one.  Most people will find a dagger, dirk, or smaller knife skins quite well.  Those with good skinning skill may use an axe or falchion to skin most creatures, and just use a dagger or special merchant tool like the slender fillet knife for a few high-end skins.  Note that knives which are short-sword based will not work as well as those knives that are dagger-based.  For archers, a single arrow is a rapier-based weapon and will work quite well.  Some sample merchant weapons which are designed for skinning are a ruby-hilted rolaren kidney dagger, a silver-veined mithglin pugio, an ivory-hilted golden eahnore parazonium, and a slender filet knife.)

>skin puma
You skinned the puma.

NOTE: Aside from the choice of weapon used for skinning, other factors which affect skinning include (a) kneeling (it’s easier to skin when kneeling), (b) the existence of hand wounds/hand scars, because they lower your chances of success, (c) how damaged the critter is and whether you hit it where you’re attempting to skin it (for example, if the skin is an "eye" and you smashed its eye, your chances at skinning the critter will not be very good; also if you tear the critter to pieces before you kill it, your chances at skinning the critter will not be very good), (d) your First Aid skill and (e) the ranger Skinning spell.

NOTE:  Sometimes the parser plays a joke on you, such as when a hunter attempts to skin a dead rat, and someone named Rattlesnake walks by:

>skin rat
>Rattlesnake just arrived.
You can only skin creatures!

Eratika skinned a puma.
