PORT SIDE'S GREAT XPECTATIONS 

"Lefty" was born Nov 15, 2007 here at Port Side Kennels.  He was the blue collared male, the 5th and last puppy born.  He is quickly taking over the house, attempting to boss his dam,  Essie, and Willie too.

 

Lefty had his eyes examined for his C.E.R.F. number, he passed, CB5930/2008-4. Also Lefty is clear via parentage of the prcd form of PRA.  Both Blaze and Essie were tested thru Opti-Gen and found to be PRA A or Normal.

 

We have had Lefty's hips checked  and evaluated by the PennHip method at 6 months of age on 5/28/2008. Lefty's Distraction Index (DI) for left hip is 0.48, the DI for the right hip is 0.55, at that time his laxity profile ranking was in the 50th percentile. After Lefty is 2 yrs old we will check his elbows, and do his hips via the OFA method and re PennHip.

 

OFA DM28/8M Lefty is found homozygous N/N with two NORMAL copies of the gene associated with Degenerative Myelopathy (DM) susceptibility.

 

Lefty was tested during the research phase of the test for  any mutation that might cause Exercise Induced Collapse, he was found to be clear of any EIC mutation.

 

Lefty started his basic field training with Rick Millheim,  Renegade Retrievers, June 2, 2008.  Oh boy, the house has quieted down with Lefty gone.  Check back to see his progress.

 

10/7/08 At this time Lefty is going thru force to the pile work with Rick.

 

7/12/09 Lefty has been home with us for a few weeks now. 

He has learned his lessons well, thanks to Bev.

Some days training goes better then there are days like this.

Currently Lefty and Ron are learning to work together as a team.  Plans are to enter Lefty in a few Derby stakes before he ages out.

August 20, 2009 Lefty is starting to fill out.

 

 

Sept 4th first try at DERBY, out in the first series.  we  will try  Sept 11, 2009.

 

Derby test on Sept 11th.  Lefty would not go in towards the guns for the shot flyer, so we were out in the first series again.

 

 

 Sept 16th was the American Chesapeake Club's National Field Trial Specialty Derby stakes.   Lefty made it thru all 4 series this time!  Unfortunately Ron called Lefty in before he had that final duck.  No ribbons this time, but Lefty showed he knows his work.

Derby attempt Oct 2, 2009.  Lefty and Ron managed to get thru 2 and 1/2 series.  Water double. Lefty did not go back for the memory bird.  Ran as test dog for the final series and of course Lefty got the birds.  Still a work in progress.  One of these days it will all come together.

 

Oct 16  Del Bay. Again OUT in the third series. first bird of the water double retrieved- started back, dropped his head, looked in at Ron, then proceeded to eat the duck.  Not the proper time to start a RAW diet.

 

Last try in Derby Oct 24 Trappe, MD Women's FT it was looking good Lefty had all the birds. He needed to get back with the last duck.  got midway back dropped the duck and a repeat of the previous week.   NO more trials, obedience work and duck retrieving commence tomorrow.  We will see what next spring brings. 

 

Lefty's OptiGen dna testing results came back.  He is officially tested as genotypically normal for prcd PRA.
