Coach Crystal & Coach Valerie

I started riding Drill when I was 16 years old with an adult team. After many years of soaking up as much information about drill as possible, I came up with the idea to start a Youth Team. The first thing I did was recruit my mother Valerie Miller. She it truly what keeps our team running smoothly. I am the youngest coach in the state at 24 years old, but I feel this brings me closer to my riders and even allows me to be a little hard on them at times. It is a lot of work starting up a new team, but with parent support, and most important dedicated girls we are looking forward to great seasons.

I feel a youth team provides a safe, fun place for girls of all ages to learn more about their horses, get to meet other horse lovers , and most important have fun!! Every year I ride one program, this year it is going to be free style. The girls like it when I'm on horse back with them( I don't always see everything!). I could not coach from horse back with out a great partner, my horse Hercules. He is an 11 year old American Warm Blood. His first year of drill was last season. He carried a flag and had a whistle blown from his back all in his first season!!

When I'm not coaching you can find me training out of a barn in Covington Washington and being a part time personal assistant. I hope to be training full time in the next year or so. I also bought a 16.3 hand Paint this summer who I have started jumping. I could not have such a busy life with out the support of my friends, family and Boyfriend Anthony (Who tacks up my horses and puts up with my "Coaching Moods" that do happen every now and then).

I owe my Passion of Drill to My first Love, Whiskey. Whiskey and I were inseparable for over 10 years. He took care of me in every crazy situation I put us in. November 18, 2004, Whiskey lost his four day fight to a ruptured liver. At 22 years old he was going as strong as ever. His loss was felt by everyone. After losing him I found my self being comforted by my other horse Hercules; He is quite a character.

This Team is dedicated in Whiskey's memory and in the memory of every girl’s first horse. Our drill horses put up with a lot. We need to remember to love them and take care of them to the best of are ability!

Coach Valerie

I am proud to be one of the coach’s for the Royal Express Youth Drill Team. You could say I am more like the 'business coach'.

My first experience with coaching was when my daughter’s came home from a car wash and said their dance team needed a new coach. So needless to say I became Kentwood High School’s dance team coach. Since then my daughter, Coach Crystal, has asked me to help her coach her “dream team”. She is the expert inside the Arena and I am outside. We make a good team, and are looking forward to a great year with great girls!!
