Profile
Professional Activities
Currently I direct operations for production, publishing, and quality-assurance at Avantext, Inc., aviation publishers.
Since my first role as an editor in 1986, and as a supervising editor in 1987, I have devoted more than 20 years to professional publishing, editorial leadership, and writing.
I've been developing websites and webmastering since 1997. Recently, I was an editorial director for Access Media Group, the editor-in-chief for STQE magazine print publishing (now Better Software), and editor-in-chief for StickyMinds.com Internet publishing.
Other positions included law editor for Municipal Code Corporation, technical publishing and communications manager for NMT Software Corporation, senior editor for International Quarterly scholarly journal, and director of publishing for Florida State University. I was also a newspaper editor and reporter.
What Makes Me Different
There are many people with two or three of these skills:
- professional editing and writing (14 years)
- web development and webmastering (8 years)
- web and electronic content management (9 years)
- project management (8 years)
- QA management (6 years)
- managing people (14 years)
I am different in that I combine all of those skills and possess them at advanced levels. This unique set of abilities combined into one person is unusual.
In addition, I am a quick, perceptive problem solver who analyzes situations effectively, and takes action in a timely fashion. (see my full list of proven abilities and professional skills on my resume page.)
Personal Activities
My hobbies include classic literature, history, aesthetic theory, solving logic problems, web-development technology, and reading and writing in these areas. I study grammatical, editorial, stylistic, and linguistic trends and traditions. I also study semantics, semiotics, and the philosophy of language. My recreational activities also include analogy and analytical puzzles and tests. Seeking organizations that nurture these kinds of activities, I joined Camp Archimedes, Metacognition, the Mega Foundation, One-in-a-Thousand Society (OATHS), and American Mensa (among others).
I have participated in professional organizations such as the American Society for Quality (ASQ), Society for Technical Communicators, Content Management Professionals (CM-Pros), M-Webheads, Software Testing Usergroup, and the FrontPage Usergroup. I've also been a member of the British Museum Library, and the board of directors for the Anhinga Literary Press. I've earned a Master of Arts degree in English and authored and published two books: a novel and an epistemological analysis of abstract objects and works of art. I'm also an Eagle Scout, so excellence has been important to me since childhood (see all associations and memberships).
Personal Editing, Writing, and Reading Activities
Leading a lifestyle of communications, I enjoy reading editorial manuals, style books, and studies in semantics and semiotics. I've published articles for fun as well as for work. (Click here for a list of my writing.)
In Closing
Whether I'm putting together magazines, writing code for websites, managing content, editing articles, or writing, language and logic provide the most fascinating and rewarding work for me. In addition to my books and articles, one of my most enjoyable writing assignments was a column twice a month, "Our Take," for an e-newsletter. You can read my collected columns, published as "The Best of Our Take."
