1960 VW Bug

Here you will find pictures of my and descriptions of my project.

This is my 1960 VW bug. I have had to car since September of 1998. I purchased the car for $600, and drove it home. The body was very straight, with the exception of the normal Bug problems. Front and rear aprons were beyond repairs. The floor pans rusted out. But besides that had great potential. Still had the original head light assemblies and tail lights.

The person who owned it before me had put a 1600 dual port in it, but did not changed the flywheel. They had rigged up a 2nd battery behind the back seat with jumper cables going to the battery in the stock location. But the car still would not start. Had to be bump started. In the glove box were about $2000 in receipts for repairs not made more than 2 months before I bought it. All new brakes, new drop spindles, new tires, and basically had the engine rebuilt. New heads, rings, etc.... I called the guy who did the work, and he remembered the bug. He was the one who told me about the flywheel. I took the bug back to him to see about completing the conversion to 12v.

The bug had a slight knock at higher rpm's. The guy told me since it still had the old flywheel, the endplay could not be set, and probably was banging around on the case. I told him to go ahead and tear it down to see if it could be machined for a larger seal. When he got it torn down, the case was to far gone. At that point I owed him about $300 for all the tear down. I asked him if he took the engine if we could call it good. So I had her towed home, and that's when the tear down began.
As you can see, it is finally making progress. These are the most recent pictues taken. I will post some pics later that I took with my 35mm when I first started tearing it apart.
