May 2007 Newsletter
June is here and the May bills are in the mail! All the gardeners step back for a second and take a deep breath. Summer Solstice is just around the corner and is a gardener milestone in the growing season. In the crush of the setting up of pots and gardens for spring, we often forget to stop and smell the flowers… or at least appreciate our work. So the Solstice reminds us to stop and enjoy the moment…if only for a moment. Abundant rains created a backlog of weeds and every garden looks like a jungle. The gardeners fell behind too, as we have to run for the truck in the pounding rain and hail or delay planting due to cold temperatures. We survive as the plants do.
Here at the Anna Marana permaculture gardens the fig trees have figs hanging and the cherries are full waiting to gain their color and sweetness. An early tomato is getting orangey-red and the other vegetables are gaining in strength and vigor. Bees are searching up and down the grape vines and caressing the nepetas and dandelion blooms. It's a Garden of Eden this year. The plants are well juiced and running strong; spring bloomers are a-blooming and the summer flowers are gathering up their buds right now.
All the rain and cold temperatures did hold back some plants that were only waiting for the sun. Now welcomed sunshine has returned. Gardeners hope to continue with the afternoon showers for as long as possible. Wouldn't it be great to go from spring rains right into the July monsoons? So the irises have been splendid, the poppies brilliant and the roses superb. Now the shastas and daylilies are preparing to deliver their best. The rains have set the stage for a spectacular summer display.
Blue Planet has almost finished all the spring chores, with a few remaining, but we are beginning our maintenance schedules now. If you have any questions regarding your schedule, please let us know. We try to keep the same schedule year after year; best we can, for your convenience. We are looking forward to a beautiful summer and hope you are too!
Fondly,
Becky The Gardener
