Frederick Rabouin and his grand-daughter Ectrene Carriveau,
child of Frederick's oldest daughter Mary Rabouin Carriveau and her husband
Philip Carriveau. The picture was taken in Seattle Washington in about 1911.

Frederick Rabouin was born in Maskinonge,
Quebec on October 28, 1848, son of Frederick Rabouin and Domathilde Guilmette.
His baptism is recorded at the Parish Church in Louiseville, as evidenced by the
attached baptism record. He was the second son of 15 children. Frederick
was the 2nd Great Grandson to Michel Rabouin, our first paternal Rabouin settler
to Quebec in 1731.
Michel had been born in St-George-des-Sept-Voies, in the Loire
Valley of France. These times in France were quite
impoverished for the average individual and included heavy
taxation from a corrupt government. Michel, had been
arrested for smuggling salt, which had been necessitated out of a
requirement to purchase diluted salt from government officials at
high prices. Quite a few of the peoples of this region
resorted to going to other provinces within France to collect
salt for their families. The salt smugglers have been
called 'faux sauniers.' Michel, having been imprisoned at Saumur, was actually deported to Quebec with a contract of service that did not allow his return to France. According to Memories de la Societe Genealogique Canadienne Francaise Vol 4 Issue 4 1993 Michel appears on the manifest of the Ship "le Heros" as a prisoner from Saumur, March 27, 1731.
Frederick has been seen on records as Rick, Derrick, Erik and Fred. We do know that he was married to Philomene Lacomb in about 1873 who was born in Ft-Edwards Township, New York. It is assumed that Frederick moved to the New York area during the great migration of Quebec Citizens to find work in America. I first found him record on a census record in 1880 at Ft-Edwards Township New York. He is also listed on the 1881 census of St-Paulin Quebec (ref, The Rabouin Family, Natalie Friend, 1988). Each time a census was taken, it seemed he was calling himself by another 'nickname.'
Four of Frederick and Philomene's children were born in Ft-Edwards Township, New York - specifically, Fred Jr., Joseph, Louis & Mary. Between 1882 & 1883 the family moved to the Daggett, Michigan area where a farm was purchased and the remainder of their children were born. My great-grandmother, Delia Raboin, was born in Daggett Michigan on May 16, 1884. Delia's birth is the first of Frederick's children's birth's to be recorded at the Menominee County Couurthouse.
Frederick's wife, Minnie,
passed away in September, 1907.Menominee County Journal;
Mrs. Derrick Raboin, a pioneer resident of this place died
suddenly at her home of heart failure Wednesday. After a days
labor and hearty supper she retired Tuesday evening and in the
morning they found she died but a few hours. She leaves to mourn
a husband and nine children, George, Derrick, Clarence, Selina,
Exilda, Mrs A. Nerbun, Mrs. Philip Carriveau and Mrs. Joseph
Carriveau. The funeral arrangement have not been made as yet on
account of so many relatives being far away.14 September 1907:--
The community was shocked by the startling news Wednesday morning
that Mrs. Derrick Raboin, an old and esteemed resident of this
township, had died during the night. Mrs. Raboin had retired on
Tuesday evening in her usual good health, but on calling her the
following morning her husband found her cold in death with a
small child in her arms. Death was caused by heart failure. She
is survived by her husband and ten children, namely, Mesdames
Carriveau of Niagara, Mrs. Alex Nerbun, Misses Selina and Exilda
Raboin, Thomas, George, Joseph, Clarence (sic), and Louis Raboin.
The funeral took place yesterday morning with services in the
Stephenson R.C. Church. George Raboin, one of the sons, arrived
from the west yesterday noon, but too late to attend the
funeral."
Frederick continued to live on
in Daggett, MI. As his sons Joseph, Daughters Mary, Delia, Selina
& Exzilda moved west to Seattle with their husbands -- he was
a frequent visitor to the family in Seattle, as well as those that stayed in the midwest. In the 1920 United
States Census in King County, he is actually enumerated with his
daughter Delia on one day in January in Seattle. A few days later
he was recorded with his son Joseph in Duvall, Washington.
Frederick passed away in Daggett, Michigan in April 1929. Menominee Herald Leader, "Frederick Raboin of Daggett, died Sunday morning in St. Joseph's Hospital. Mr. Raboin was 87 years of age and was born in Canada. He is survived by two sons and two daughters. His wife, Minne Raboin died 21 years ago. The body was prepared for burial at the Larson-Erdlitz undertaking company, Menominee and then taken to Daggett where funeral services were held Tuesday morning from St. Frederick's Church. Rev. Father F.A. Seifert officiated. Interment was in Stephensen Cemetery. The pallbearers were Philip and Dave Belongle, Peter Thoune, Fred Vincent, Joe Pairon and Pat Leaveck. Those from out of town were Mr. & Mrs. Steve Raboin of Menominee, Mrs. Louis Cahee and son Napolean of Goodman. Mr and Mrs Max Celia of Kenosha, Mr. and Mrs. Raboin of Niagara, Mr. and Mrs. Albert Peterson of Iron Mountain."
