The James Oliver Sinor Family History

James Oliver Sinor and son Leon 1908 Baxter County, Ark

James Oliver Sinor, born September 1, 1883  in Baxter County Arkansas and grew up in this same location.  In the book  History to Baxter County Arkansas, James' ancestors were mentioned as  some of the first settlers to this community.  James is the 2nd Great Grandson of John Siner Sr. who enlisted in the Continental Line Army on August 3, 1776, as a private and Wagoner.  he served at Valley Forge, Pennsylvania, winter of 1777, with George Washington.  He was with the 1st regiment of the Continental Line. (Virginia).

Research into James Oliver's 2nd Great Grandfather shows the following interesting information:  His regiment fought at Brandywine, then moved to the Delaware River where they crossed and moved to Mammoth, New Jersey, and fought a big battle there on 28 June 1778.  From there he fought his way north partaking of
all the battles until they reached Brunswick, New Jersey, in July 1778 and was out of action until the latter part of June 1779.  From there he was moved to Middlebrook, Virginia, and was discharged on 3 August 1779.  John Sr was wounded twice, March 1777 and December 1778. He received $200 and 6 pounds sterling.  This was given for an act of bravery. Middlebrook, Virginia, is approximately 60 miles from Bedford Virginia. He moved to Bedford in 1797 and bough 225 1/4 acres of land with Benjamin Sinor, who is believed to be John's brother.  In 1810 the census for Bedford shows him as over 50, probably 55 with one male in his household between 16-26.

The Marriage Record of James Oliver Sinor & Bertie Lee Horn is found in the Baxter County Arkansas Marriage Records, Book 4  Page 54, September 30, 1905. To this union 9 children were born, including their youngest child, Billy Gene Sinor (the father to the author of this web page). James & Bertie moved from Whiteville Twp, Baxter County Arkansas to Locust Grove, OK in 1918 in a covered wagon.  The family lived near Locust Grove, Salina & Pryor, OK.   Census records show that James Oliver Sinor was a farmer most of his life.    James died during the depression on October 7, 1931 (Burial Ross Mayes Cemetery Locust Grove, OK) leaving his wife Bertie with the responsibility to finish raising the 4 youngest children, along with those boys who had stayed at home.

In The History of Baxter County Arkansas, published 1944, Bertie's family (the Horn Family) has an article referencing the family history. "T.H. Horn(Bertie's grandfather)  and his wife, formerly Tabitha Elizabeth Tyer, came to Arkansas in 1848 and settled in Independence County near Cave City.  After two years they went to the head of the Bayou, near Batesville where they spent 31 years and where Mrs. Horn died.  The rest of the family then came to Baxter County, landing here on January 20, 1880 and settled on what is still known as the HORN place near Gassville, where a son, Thomas Oliver now lives. (Thomas is Bertie's uncle)).  T.H. Horn was in General Price's Army, in Captain Barney Ford's company during the Civil war.  He was a Mason, Odd Fellow and a Missionary Baptist.  At his death on July 11, 1910, he was about 90 years of age and was the father of the following children: F.R., deceased, formerly of Mount Pleasant; Mary (Mrs. A.L. Conyers), formerly of Cave City; C.J., deceased, formerly of Gassville; H.M. who died in California, and Thomas Oliver of Gassville.  Thomas Oliver Horn was for 13 years chairman of the county educational board.  He married Alice Poynter, a native of Marion County.

The Horns originally came from Wales to North Carolina and from there to middle Tennessee.  The Tyers were from England and settled in this country in Virginia, moving later to Montgomery County, Tenn., where Thomas Hunter Horn and Elizabeth Tyer met and were married."
