Premarital Counseling
Why, God? Some time after the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001, I began compiling my sermons that related to that day and our responses to it. Then, I added essays or reflections between the sermons. I considered trying to get the set published as a book but did not. The book bears the title, Why, God? Below is that book in PDF format. The sermons were preached from September 16, 2001 to June 16, 2002.
Adult
Confirmation Refresher Course.
I offered this course in 2002 for some adults who wanted it.
We followed the outline of a regular confirmation
course (for 7th & 8th graders) but discussed matters on an
adult level. After each of the 22 discussions, I wrote a summary,
and
I have linked them all to the course outline. Reading the summaries
is not, of course, the same as being in the group
and participating in the discussion, but I hope it is
helpful.
Silvan S. Tomkins Institute Newsletter #7, December, 2005
My association with SSTI began with its video, "Managing Shame, Preventing Violence, a Call to our Clergy," and deepened when, through a mutual friend, I met its executive director, Donald L. Nathanson, MD and read his book, Shame and Pride: Affect, Sex, and the Birth of the Self. In the fall of 2005, I was asked to submit an article for the SSTI newsletter. The editor, John Brodsky, MD suggested I write about shame as it relates to religion and politics.
My article and responses to it appeared in the December 2005 newletter, and SSTI provided me with a PDF version to post on this site. Click here to read the newsletter. You will need Adobe Reader®, which can be downloaded free.
