Week 9
Rubric Self-Evaluation
Robert Slater

On-Target Criteria Are
A. Clear
_ X _ Each element to be scored is vividly and understandably described;
Though "vivid" is not a term I generally include with rubrics.
_ X _ All language used is specific and accurate.
_ X _ The scoring guide is well organized both within and across rating scales.
In my opinion this is one of the most important pieces of a rubric.
_ X _ Examples of student work are provided, or can be easily found, to illustrate each level of quality.
    If space afforded...
_ X _ There is evidence that two teachers or two students evaluating the same piece of work independently rate it the same.
    The details are quite specific.

B. Complete and Compelling
_ X _ The criteria center on what experts in the field would consider the most important or telling aspects of quality.
_ X _ All key facets of performance are reflected in the criteria; nothing of importance is left out.
If there is anything left out I'd like to know.
_ X _ They have a ring of truth about them-it is clear why each ingredient is included and the balance seems right.
_ X _ The criteria are couched in the best current thinking of the academic field.
_ X _ The criteria leave out trivial, tangential, or unrelated aspects of performance.

Practical Criteria Are
A. Precise
_ X _ The level of detail and precision in ratings (holistic or analytical) fits the use.
_ X _ The criteria can be applied to student responses to a variety of similar performance tasks; that is, they are generalizable across exercises.
I would utilize a version of this for many writing assignments.
_ X _ The criteria lead to fair evaluations for all students, regardless of ethnicity, socioeconomic status, or any factors other than achievement.

B. Teacher Friendly
_ X _ Teachers feel that the time required to learn to use the rubric dependably is worth it in terms of the usefulness of the information obtained and the perceived instructional value for students. Usefulness of information includes planning instruction, tracking student progress, and communicating with others.
The key here is having the rubric easy to use and understand for students, teacher, parents, administrators.  I will attempt to utilize this rubric with my fellow staff and see how well it really works.

C. Student Friendly
_ X _ The criteria address aspects of performance that students can understand.
_ X _ The criteria have been translated into language that students understand and can apply.
Essential.  I attempted to use the simplest terminology to make each point.
_ X _ All levels of performance can be illustrated with examples students themselves can find.

Comments:
The key missing component in my rubric is the actual scoring procedure in a numeric set-up.  Is this assignment worth 100 %?  I have three key sections to each descriptor, but with 4 sections that does not easily add up to 100.  I think that perhaps Content should have a higher weight than the other categories.  This would give me a total of 15 points which is easier to manipulate for percentages.
