You should have a minimum of one smoke detector on each floor of your home. Many fire prevention personal also recommend one in each bedroom of your home. TEST your smoke detectors regularly and replace the batteries once a year.
FIRE DRILLS
Develop a plan with your family to escape your home in the event of fire. Stay down crawling on your hands and knees (not your belly) are safer because it keeps you in the safety zone 12 inches above the floor but below doorknobs.
Test your bedroom door with the back of your hand for heat before opening it. If it is HOT DO NOT OPEN IT, but find an alternate route of escape. If you live in a two-story house or one that is high off the ground then have an escape ladder for each bedroom. If you clothing should catch fire remember to STOP, DROP, and ROLL to smother the flames. Cool the burn with cool (not cold, or ice water) and call for immediately for medical attention.
KITCHEN
Always keep hot liquids away from the edge of tables, and children's curiosity. Keep cooking pot handles turned in on the stove. Use common sense when using any device that makes heat. A hot surface burns as bad as flames itself.
Many children are poisoned needlessly each year. Keep all floor, general purpose, bleach, laundry detergent and similar chemicals LOCKED UP out the reach of children. Keep the poison control center number handy by all phones in your home. Seek their advice immediately if an accidental poisoning takes place.
