Go at Abiqua School

eyes for a group to be alive. As they played I wandered around the room
answering questions and pointing out stones that were already dead. I left
the gobans for the students to play during their free time and breaks and
promised to return in a week with another lesson. Three of the boys
volunteered to set up the round robin tournament. And one girl asked if they
could take the Go boards with them on their school trip to Ashland. So, it
looks like in this small classroom Go is a happening thing at least for the
time being.
6th Grade Outreach, Corvallis OR
by Robert O'Malley
Tuesday, April 27, Cheldelin
Middle School, Corvallis OR
Sixth graders in Ms. Gail Langton's
1st period Humanities class at Cheldelin
Middle School were introduced to the game of Go as part of their "Ancient
China" curriculum. After covering a brief history of Go / history of
China, the students were first introduced to just enough of the rules to
allow them play Capture 1. After everyone has had a chance to play
three or four games we change the game to Capture 5. I don't mention
Ko quite yet. After they have played for a bit more, I get their
attention, and show what could happen if the board state can repeat itself.
They think its pretty funny, black and white trying to capture each other
like that. When they hear about the Ko rule, it makes sense to
them.
A number of 9x9 sets are always in the humanities
classes, and are available for play during their morning break. Some
play capture 5, some play territory. For those who want to play more,
Cheldelin has a Go club that plays 13x13 Go during 1st lunch on Fridays.
This is now our fourth year of ongoing outreach at
Cheldelin Middle School. It is a pleasure working with them.
