Notes:
On the Western Go Players "Round Robin"
by
Robert O'Malley
The round robin has been taking place since January, and is now in its fifth
round this month. The aim has been to create a very dynamic
environment where players meet under tournament conditions, playing about
one game per week. This is ideal for players that are rapidly
improving, where a person's rating changes monthly, based on their
performance. There should be no surprise that 40% of our players are
students, from elementary school to graduate school. This month eight
new players joined from the waiting list: six of those eight are
students. And with those new players, Tier 1 now increases to 4d
strength.
The key to the round robin is that all matches are even matches within your
tier, and each month you promote up if you win 2/3 of your matches, or you
shift down if you lose 2/3 of your matches. If you know players that
would be interested in this type of event, please pass the word. http://home.comcast.net/~rtomalley/round.robin/
On the Future Direction of Go Servers?
Q: to
William Shubert
A: It is very hard to see too far ahead. There are a lot of
possibilities. A few people on KGS have requested that betting
be added to KGS - but I won't do that any time soon, once you start adding
gambling of any kind there are a lot of legal issues that I'd just rather
not deal with. Another possibility would be to add live video, like some of
the Korean servers have.
