More about the Redmond Cup and the Ing-Redmond Tournaments
by None Redmond
Two years ago we began a new tournament which was a continuation of the Cup
and which we called the Ing-Redmond Tournament. This
tournament was for young Go players up to 30 years of age who were stronger
than 5 Dan and not playing in the Redmond Cup. This included one young
player who was so strong that we graduated him out of the Cup and into the
Ing Redmond as the Redmond Meijin after a famous Japanese
tournament. Eric Lui was only in his
mid-teens.
This year we have expanded this tournament so that people who usually play
in the Redmond Cup but who are 5 Dan or stronger may compete in the Ing
Redmond instead of the Redmond Cup. The Ing-Redmond tournament is played
entirely on IGS using scribes for the finals, best of three
games and the winner is flown to the Congress to take the youth seat in the
prestigious Ing Tournament.
This is a cause for celebration. Eleven years ago when we began the Cup
Tournament there were very few young go players and only one or two who
played at Dan strength. Nowadays there are more than a few playing at 5 dan
strength and more who will be eligible to compete in the new Ing
Redmond Tournament and perhaps go on to play in the Ing Tournament at
the Congress.
The AGA's "goteach" list ...
... has apparently been down since
April 14. The cause of the problem is being looked into.
