Youth Profile on: CURTIS TANG
by None Redmond
Curtis Tang is from
Southern California. He is now 11 years old and has been playing in the
Redmond Cup tournament since he was 7 when he had been learning to play Go
for 2 years. As the winner of the junior league Redmond Cup he has been
chosen to play for the United States in the World Youth Goe Championship.
His IGS rating is 6 Dan.
Curtis works hard to learn go practicing for about 3 hours a day.
Initially taught by his father, he also visits the ancestral home in China
where he has two major teachers in Shanghai. One is
Fang, Jie who is a 7 Dan professional and
the other is Li, Jia-Qing, an amateur 6
Dan. There he jogs daily before breakfast and then during the morning he
works at understanding life and death problems and re-playing high Dan
games. During the afternoon he learns some josekis, fusekis and studies
middle and end game problems. Then in the evening his teacher analyses
games he had played. This is the pattern of his life in China staying with
his grandfather.
This year Curtis is still playing in the Junior league of the Redmond Cup
and will be one of the finalists to go to Congress for the final three
games there. Next year he will graduate to the Senior league and play
against some stronger players. At the moment he is unsure whether he wishes
to be a professional player or not. But whatever Curtis does our best wishes
go with him for his future. He is bound to be one of America’s luminary go
players and we shall doubtless hear more of him as time goes on.
